Most of the time just let whoever you are buying it from know you need it installed and they will have someone do it for you. If there is a shortage of people doing those jobs then that is probably your best bet. Whoever is working with Lowes/Home Depot will want to keep them happy so it will get done faster.
I bought a house with 2 of these, and yes, so far they are good. Endless hot water and no potential leaks. I am a little concerned about what happens when they need to be maintenanced.
Depends, I have propane and my propane dealer installed except for the parts which was less than the cost of an installer. Gas or propane is the way to go, maybe they have improved the electric models. I do storm restoration, we use them in shower and sleeping units, only way to go, had mine in my house for about 5 years now, no problems.
Why would it take so long?
I walked into my garage one morning a month or so ago and water was spraying out of my water heater. I called my usual HVAC/Plumbing company and they came and installed a new one that afternoon.
We had our hot water tank replaced last week.
A tankless system would have been just short of 5x the cost, and we wpuld need to flush it out yearly as maintenance.
Oh, and something else wpuld have to be updated too...a line to it, or something like that. I dont remember exactly because I had stopped caring about the details when i saw the price difference.
It's me, my wife, and 2 girls in the house and we don't run out of hot water as it is.
There was just no way to even begin to justify a tankless setup.
Friend of mine has one. He just had to have his descaled after two years, and the plumber told him you needed to do it every year. It might depend on how hard the water is in your area. It's pretty bad here ... I have a whole-house water softener.
Not to mention, when you replace a conventional water heater, it's generally sort of an emergency situation. I don't know anybody who replaces them periodically as a preventive approach. In an emergency, you don't really have time to research tankless systems.
