Beat writers' Egg Bowl analysis in today's CL. They concluded that neither team can pass, so it's a question of rushing defenses. Can we stop Plumlee? Can they stop Hill? It might come down special teams, referees and lawyers. Something like this...
With the game tied in the fourth quarter, Malik Dear will finally attempt a punt return and find himself running free down the sidelines when a guy wearing a shark head mask jumps out of the seats and does the best WWE clothesline ever. (The ref sees it, but does nothing.) Play continues as the ball pops out and lands in a Black Bear's hands. He lopes the other way with it in front of the State bench. Moorhead, following the action on the J-tron, steps out onto the field and gets trucked. (The ref sees that, too, but still does nothing.) The ball pops out again, and a kid from Starkville wearing a Stephen Guidry jersey catches it, but he runs the wrong way. He's about to cross the goal line when a State cheerleader uses a bullhorn at the pylon to stop him. The ball pops out again, this time rolling along the one-yard line...Bully sees his chance and breaks free from his handler, grabs the pigskin and sprints back down the field with it. The Famous Maroon Band spills out of the stands and follows him. A cow with a bell wanders onto the field behind them. Bully crosses the goal line as time runs out. (The ref sees it, but fails to signal a touchdown.) Cohen runs out and gets in his face, flying his wing-tips and loosening his tie, doing his best Dudy Noble in-your-face-umpire explosion. It works. The ref finally signals touchdown. In an absurd stroke of luck, the call on the field is upheld on review, and State wins. Ole Miss files suit, of course, but it takes years to get a ruling. An asterisk goes into the record books.
