I bought the twin DVD pack with outtakes; the deleted footage really adds different dimensions to the movie.

What’s the last great.. or even really good sports movie to come out? It seems like we used to get one every 5-10 years but I can’t remember the last one.

Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, The Natural, Major League, and The Bad News Bears are all better and that's just baseball movies.

Warrior is so cringe. The unintentional comedy from the dialogue is off the charts.

Not sure it's the greatest, but it's definitely up there.

I like that scene near the end when, during the timeout, every player in the huddle on the Hickory team looks at Jimmy Chitwood and Jimmy says, "I'll make it."

Jimmy = money in the bank.

Moneyball is my favorite from the last decade or so.

Of course it’s not a movie but Ted Lasso on Apple is some of the best TV on right now.

Sports movies are a tough watch for me. The acting may be fine and the story line really good, but, the actual sports footage parts are ALWAYS TURRIBLE. Maybe its hard to replicate the action just like they want it but doesn't matter if its baseball, football or whatever, the action parts always suck. For baseball it always looks like somone is rolling a soft grounder to an infielder from just off camera or someone is under handing a football throw to a receiver from that same distance.

No love for Varsity Blues? Who doesn't like Ali Larter and her whipped cream bikini? It was almost good enough to overcome the terrible fake southern accents by itself. But when the math teacher turned out to be a hot stripper, that put it over the top.

There is a distinct possibility that I had been day drinking on Saturday before starting this thread, so I apologize for it's initial aggressiveness and grammatical qualities.

That said, I'm happy some of you found it a solid jump off to discuss sports movies.

A couple of thoughts.

I love Major League, but I just don't think a comedy can be considered the greatest sports movie. There's not a lot of comedy in sports while it's actually happening.

Also, Rudy still and forever sucks.

I stand by my opinion. Hoosiers is the standard.

Man, some of the most hilarious moments in my life have occurred while participating in sporting events. Stuff you see in Major League, Bull Durham, etc., are a lot closer to how it really is than not.

Only one I could come up with off the top of my head was Miracle, which I googled and that was 2004. Damn.

There's this list that seems to support your point:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls021340559/

Haven't seen many of these, but looking at the rankings, I'm thinking they are pretty flawed.

The best sports movie of all time is RAGING BULL. Of course, all the best are about boxing. The Wrester is a good one too.

But I gotta go Hoosiers or The Natural for the team sport movies.

Bull Durham, Tin Cup and Field of Dreams are up there. Thanks, Kevin Costner.

Rudy bored the **** out of me. I can't stand the Fighting Irish.

I think I may have been the only one, but I liked "For Love of the Game." The love story side of it wasn't great, but I thought the struggle with retiring seemed realistic and really well done. Maybe athletes who have been through that thought it was crap and ridiculous but seemed good to me.

I thought it was good and so is your take on it.
I suspect when it came out, folks were just over Costner's overwroughtness and the whole idea of him pitching a perfect game.

Bull Durham and North Dallas Forty are the two best "Pro" sports movies. Bull Durham's writer could have been in my locker room in the minor leagues. Tim Robbins was totally unbelievable athletic wise as power throwing pitcher. He did a good job as the character, just ignore the throwing. NDF was definitely a movie of it's time, but again the locker room stuff and the final John Matuszak meltdown about when I call it a game you call it a business is SO TRUE.

Speaking of Robbins not being athletic, I remember a few years ago I was watching something on Charlie Sheen and Major League. Can’t remember the pro player that had been there giving pointers during filming, but they said he was hitting the upper 80’s. Cocaine is a helluva drug

The Final Season was from 2007, but I thought it was pretty good.

I can't believe it's been over 20 years since For the Love of the Game came out.

I wonder if the rise of well done sports documentaries like The Last Dance, the 30 for 30 series, and any number of Netflix, Amazon, or HBO docs have dampened the ability to make a quality sports movie.

The guy you're referring to is the great Pete Vuckovich. He played the first baseman of the Yankees in the movie. He was the guy who led the league in all major categories including nose hair. When the guy sneezed he looked like a party favor.
