I'm not a fire Cal guy or a Cal hater, never have been. I think he is and has been great for our program and state. Having said that, I'm curious what you guys think.

IF we were to bomb this season and miss the tournament, where would you stand with our coaching staff? I know we have a good group coming in next year, but once again, no good big man.

Should Cal start feeling pressure if this season is a giant flop? I'm curious what guys like @Cowtown Cat @BassProCat @GonzoCat90 @Smashcat and @Wall2Boogie think, along with the rest of you guys obviously.

I think it’s really bad if we miss the tourney in a year like this.

Some have said in the Cal Trending Down thread that we’ll be fine, because everyone else sucks too. Well, what does it say about Cal when, in a year that the whole field is down, he can’t even produce a top 25 team and will possibly have this team on the bubble?

Make no mistake, we are very much seeing the beginning of the end of Cal. It’ll take 2-3 more years of this, but this is the year it’s really going to set in for more and more fans.

Cal not going anywhere. I think his contract is well satisfied. He’s not trying to hire his son. Call will be the coach till he decides to leave.

Kenny Payne is our “big man” coach and a lead recruiter. Anyone want to replace him?
I think not,

I admitted I questioned if Cal is worth the officiating.... worth Nike no longer favoring Cal due to the rift since not playing in the PK tournament... etc.

So far this year...I'm leaning towards we're never going to be allowed to win a title with Cal... he's made too many enemies. I'm not calling for him to be fired... but I'm starting to look forward to him retiring. The officiating makes me wanna destroy the universe and I dont need this anger on my soul.

No. Cal shouldn't feel any pressure until we've tanked like 3 seasons in a row. Look at the last 10 years, no team has been better consistently.
I agree with the past ten years. We've just got a ton of "talent" on this team, and the results aren't matching that.

My bad, I thought it was outta character because I would’ve included you in that (our) group. This is a painful night. Have a Merry Christmas friend.
You too brother. I just wanted to see what people thought, in as civilized of a manner possible, lol.

Well, losing two in a row is does not give me any confidence in this team or in Cal getting them better honestly. I don't see much in this team.

Cal has said all the right things, but the results are not there. His past history of his teams give me hope in him, but not this year.

If he misses the tourney this year, big changes need made to his approach on offense and to his staff. Bring an offensive guru on the uptick. For goodness sake, get somebody who can shoot the ball.

I am not a guy who wants Cal gone. I think he is as perfect a fit for UK as there has ever been. However, there is no excuse for him missing the tourney twice at UK shoud that happen again this year. I will expect some serious changes by him personally and his staff if that happens or I will have to reconsider my views.

UK is bigger than him or anyone else. This fanbase is rabid and will not react well to a year that results in missing the tourney. He can coach, Something is just off and he better figure it out soon. Nonsense to those that say he can;t coach.

This is the post that I was looking for when I created the thread. I wouldn't change a word you said.

This cal era is the most exciting time in uk bball history, but if cal doesn’t bring in some serious muscle to the front line we’re going to continue to struggle. as i feared we are severely weak at that position this year, and it’s becoming more obvious as we play better teams.

Sadly I believe Cal is starting to enter into negative territory. Things are in fact trending down and they won't get better this year, next year or anytime in the foreseeable future. Simply put it doesn't matter what level you recruit at you can't win with nearly 100% roster turnover. You just can't. I don't care if you sign all 10 of the top 10 highschool seniors and you will end up with a marginal top 25 team.

When Cal got here he was known for the one and done but back then it was 3 or 4 players that fit in with the returning juniors and seniors. Now its the whole roster and this just isn't stable. It's no coincidence that the best seasons Cal has had were the ones where we had a large portion of the previous season's returning points, rebounds and assists. Cal's one and done jumped the shark. He's fallen too much in love with his reputation and he's taken it to a very bad place.

What we are seeing is that if you put a high school star in the lineup next to 3 or 4 seniors then he'll develop better and faster than a high school senior that you pair up with a less talented high schooler. Our in coming stars are just not developing until their 2nd or 3rd year in the NBA. And that does us no good.

Cal recruits for the draft. He doesn't build a roster. Again this season is the same as the past 5. We are not a college basketball team competing for the title. What we really are is an AAU team for the NBA draft. Nothing more. Our guys don't rebound, play defense, run an offense or shoot the ball. But we do look good at the preseason combine.

The way Cal does things simply doesn't work and never will. We have a very poorly constructed team and it's not getting better. Cal will never coach another game in the Final four until he starts building a roster and stops trying to develop for the draft.

Cal has a tiger by the tail. He CAN coach but his recruiting strategy doesn’t permit it.

He spends the entire year teaching basketball 101. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

In the tourney he’s so desperate that he micromanages them to close losses They never become experienced enough to be trusted to just play and win.

Will certainly be interesting to see what happens roster wise after this season is over.
