I have taught in 4 schools ranging from D2 to A. I will say that my experience at a class A school has been a complete joke. It’s a daycare for most kids and the good students classes are constantly ruined by the dipshit kids. Have had quite a few home schooled kids come to take my classes as I teach an elective area, most have been very mature, smart and well behaved. I don’t blame you for choosing home school one bit and if you are on the edge of Lincoln, consider opting her into one of the smaller towns close by. Smaller schools still provide a quality education and provide a better value system in my opinion.
That's a good idea. Didn't even think of that. Standing Bear to Norris is 14 minutes according to google.

I don't get your defense that only interaction can happen from 7am-3pm and saying homeschool kids are unable to do that. Your examples of interaction during a school day are talking in the halls or eating lunch. Homeschool kids eat lunch. They also have breaks in between subjects (i.e. hallway time). They can interact via phone, text, email, personal contact with other individuals, etc. during those same time frames. I don't think all of life's lessons are being learned in the 5-minute walk between class and 25-30 minutes for lunch. If your position is that the great, grandiose interaction of chit chatting in the hallway between classes is the key to academic, social, and lifelong personal success then maybe public schools should reverse their schedules. Teach math for 5 minutes, then let the kids wander the hallways for 50 minutes to interact, then teach science for 5 minutes before letting the kids loose for another 50 minute hallway session.

All I was trying to say is that 99.99% of homeschool kids are not locked away in a basement dungeon all day long. And that talking to their peers about their pimples, which boy/girl likes them, what video they saw on Tick Tock, or any other useless banter in the hallway is an effective form of interaction is comical.

Homeschool kids are not cheated out of anything by not going to public schools. They do just as well, if not better in college. Same thing for careers after college. To each their own.
That might be true, but they are also some of the weirdest ************* alive. Maybe things have changed over the years, but every time a homeschooled kid came to public school their social skills are **** and are just weird kids. That can cause other issues not related to schooling because they are unable to fit in.

It's like the peoole who designed that city had no idea it would ever grow. Wost street design management, ever.
I have always said the city planners that set up Lincoln should have their licenses revoked. I dont care if they have to do it posthumously, they still deserve to be expelled from that profession.

90% of American youth attend public schools. I would expect that if the American public school system was a failure, the country would be experiencing a lack of economic vitality and yet the United States is a very wealthy country with a skilled and adaptable work force. From your last sentence, it seems you are concerned with the morals and media addictions of your fellow Americans. That's you problem, not a problem for the rest of us.
Many of the people leading the economy today were not from public schools. The current leaders and the majority of the workforce are also from a time in which public schools performed far better than today. Check back in 10-15 years on how the current crop pans out. It actually bodes well for the 12% than can actually add. Never has the bar been set so low for quality employment opportunities for the next 30 years.

Yes, I am concerned about the morals and destructive media addictions of my fellow Americans. I never stated or implied that my concerns were a problem for you (though IMO it is, but not in the way you speak of it). I merely stated that if I believe people will have a destructive influence on my children, I will not force my kids to socialize with them.

While we're making up statistics, I would argue that at least 80% of the success/failure of kids in any school system comes back to the parents and the general situation at home. This goes for homeschooling and public/private schooling.

For some, a good school or teacher can help kids overcome a bad situation at home, but it doesn't usually work out that way. At the same time, some parents are able to give their kids a homeschool experience that is head and shoulders above what they can experience in a traditional school setting.

For my wife and I, we just decided when our kids were small that it was our responsibility to make sure they get an education and experiences that will benefit them when they're out of the house. That has led us to different decisions for different kids at different times. Currently, we have one full time at public school, one part time, and two at home. That will likely change a bit next year.

I would encourage parents to feel the weight of responsibility for all aspects of their kids' upbringing and be involved regardless of their schooling decision. For some that might mean homeschooling. For others it might be having discussions with their kids about things they're learning or experiencing in school. Sometimes easier said than done, but it makes all the difference IMO.

Also, be the kind of person you want your kids to grow up to be. There are outliers, but who YOU are is the biggest factor determining who your kids will become.

I'm sure there are some really crappy private schools... everything can be explained on a bell curve. Private schools just aren't required to tow the line of activist public education.

None of ANY of these generalizations regarding public education take place where @cavalot teaches, BTW. Forgot to issue that disclaimer. Sorry, bud....
Exactly and that's the problem with generalizations. Unfortunately for many of the dolts out there and their one size fits all mentality, those generalizations become fact. Demographics and cultural differences play a major part in the way a public school is operated. Sorry but an inner city school in Detroit is going to look and feel different than Central City Nebraska. Why wouldn't it?

Tolerance is where I think public schools have gone wrong. Those students should not be allowed to disrupt the learning of others. With online learning where it is these days, there is no excuse for not booting a shitrat out of school while still offering them the opportunity to learn the content needed to meet district, state and national requirements.

I think what happens is a lot of people take the bottom 10% of public schools and think that is all public schools, which of course, it is not.

Just here in the Omaha area you have

3 Elkhorn HS's that are amazing
2 Gretna schools
DC west
Millard schools
Bennington
Papio's
Westside

Are there bad public schools too, of course!

This is 100% correct.

And remember (as you know) that is not on the teachers or admins, that is on the school board and the non teachers that make policy.

I like hiring homeschool kids. They have actual work ethic. Better tell one of the doctors that I had work on a foot issue a few years ago (that came highly recommended, has his own practice, and is very busy), that he can’t be as good as a public school kid. Is that what we are trying to say? Seems like some here are upset. Usually that means you are over the target.
Take it up with your union, I’m sure they will get right on it… after funneling their dues to woke political causes

Not fully. The admins of a district draw policy with regards to how they want to handle the daily operations of the school district including the requirements by law for educating students in that district. The school board simply signs off on policy. Now do some school boards stick their noses where they don't belong. Yes! But I have not seen that where I have been, especially with regards to student discipline and expectations.

I have yet to meet a public school Principal who I would describe as an activist. And there are plenty of private schools where the student body is much more "activist" than the public schools.
I'm sure you're right, am only speaking in generalizations. However, I'd opine that we have probably very different definitions of 'activist'. I'd consider anyone who verbally supports even the concept of 'gender fluidity' (just as one example) to be a lib activist, mostly because it's exclusively a lib activist position, and literally no one else is buying it. Gubmint and public schools have (for reasons that I honestly do NOT understand) been trying to paint this stuff as 'normal', using media to move the proverbial goalposts from something that, what a DECADE ago was universally regarded as nonsense? As in having zero basis in actual science.

Lib activists tend to trend their careers toward teaching (public educators at EVERY level are 90+% dems), arts, lawyering, 'journalism and media', and Gubmint positions. And then they try and make the unwitting think that their activist opinions are 'mainstream'. Look around you. Explains a lot of what you see, everyday.

Of course not, but according to the claims here, he shouldn’t have been able to be successful because he didn’t attend a secondary school that is the envy of the world. Or something like that drivel

I don't think anyone said that at all.

I think the closest "negative" was that home schooled kids don't socialize as much or as often.

When 90+% of public educators are registered Dems, when 90+% of those in 'media' get to invent and report on what 'Truth' constitutes, yeah generalizations don't describe every school and media source, but they sure as hell describe most. Generalizations sure as hell describe 'average'. I'll trust that your school doesn't represent the middle of the bell curve, and is somewhere closer to the right corner. I mean someone's gotta be there, right? But if you're trying to describe public education as Impartial as a whole or even as a general description, you're nuts. Look around you! See what we've become! Public education and 'mainstream media' are exacting a MASSIVE toll on the quality of our youth. Generation after generation it's getting worse. What would YOU attribute this to?

I get a kick out of the woke superintendents at LPS that have fallen all over themselves the last couple years to fire off mass emails about things that happen elsewhere (don’t happen here, and the narrative they chose to slurp up ended up being media crazed disinformation). Those are always accompanied by a guilt trip to the parents that “it starts at home and we need your help”.
Well no ****, idiots. As many teachers and administrators that don’t think parents should have a say in what happens in schools (as evidenced in this thread by a teacher claiming school boards are constantly wrong), and then all the sudden they want to trot out the wokest message possible, and try and guilt trip people that have zero to do with these issues.
Just. Teach.
I donate my time and teach inmates, outreach programs, and the like. I take time away from my family to try and make their lives better, and help the world keep turning. I don’t feel the need to relay my beliefs on any of them, and sure as hell don’t have the hero complex some of these people do.
Are there issues? Hell yes. Do the majority of teachers do good? Indeed they do! Does turning a blind eye and ignoring the bad ones (who apparently the kids should relay info about, instead of the adults ignoring it and excusing it like in this thread do), do a ton of harm? That’s also true

Like I said, over the last 3-4 years, teachers have become the most hated profession.

It is a bit shocking to see so much of it in this thread but I guess it is still just a small minority of posters and hopefully of people.

I am sure some sort of "Defund the schools" thing will start soon. Until those people realize, once again, that being at home with their kids. all day and teaching them is brutal.

Oh I am sure they do!

We did not have a game in Lincoln this season so I did not see any of the schools or their students. Maybe it is filled with teachers telling the kids to dress up like animals and to change their gender!

Poverty, cultural inequities, ignorance, generational failures within family structures etc... . You and others are all about personal responsibility but expect schools to pick up the pieces where family and society has failed. You want to blame the very people who are working day in and day out to change the very problems that you cited above. You see educators as the root of the problem, I see them as the front line troops trying to rectify it. I could give you countless stories of teachers who have positively impacted hundreds of future American citizens who were susceptible to a future less bright then they ended up reaching.

The problem with people like you is that you offer no real solutions..Only blame, hysteria, generalizations, negativity, etc.. The answer isn't to defund public education or disparage teachers. It's the opposite. You want to fix America, It starts at home, in communities, in outreach programs, etc... and of course education plays an important role in developing a society that doesn't dwell in cultural and societal ignorance.

When somebody tells me they teach in a public school now I just immediately wonder if their one of the freaks who is pushing kids to pretend they're of the opposite sex and hiding it from that child's parents...setting that aide though...my amazing wife with a heart of gold has done a lot for others, social worker in the poorest parts of the south, mission trips to Haiti, prison counselor, teach elementary, etc,etc...she got out of it because of the parents. It got to the point she couldn't hold kids accountable anymore and when she tried the parents would call in to complain and she'd be forced to apologize to the kid and parent, and she'd end up filling out his lesson plan and so much else because they'd just refuse, knowing their parents would complain. She didn't have to work, did it because that's just who she is...and the word needs people like that. She didn't need the money, she loved teaching kids, parents? Not so much.

This board is full of stupid people with badass bikes, and stupid people who sleep with doctors, and stupid people who own bars and can therefore speak for every CEO in the country. There are fewer hiding places for these people in our society and that is why they are getting desperate. So they are hiding out in the mountains, suburbs, exburbs, or in the middle of the sandhills and going on college football message boards to show their knowledge and experience of nothing. This entire thread is about privileged people with minimal skills attempting to hide from the real world while disparaging those who wish they could hide from the real world but aren't privileged enough to do so.

Did not exagerate in the least.....one in particular, smug little ****.....just sat there while everyone else did what they were supposed to and she had to do some of his work...nothing wrong with him other than a ****** attitude.....and she just walked away from the profession....he was the last of many straws....and the gender bender **** is one of many issues I have with the profession, there are a lot more than that. I apologize to the good teachers out there....I know there are tons of good ones. I have equal issues with parents who act like the ines I just described above in my wifes case.
