I was listening to The Fan on my way home from work today and Ray Fittipaldo was on to talk Steelers. Anyway, at the very end of his segment, he said that his contacts at Holy Cross, where I believe that he played, have indicated to him that PSU is interested in their head coach.

You know, I think that you probably are correct about that; this was mentioned as the segment was ending and I don’t believe that he mentioned a name. I’m beginning to think that Chesney may be the next PSU coach.

FWIW, Mike Farrell on the full ride show today said that if he were in Krafts shoes that he would hire Chesney (and Farrell is a guy who really likes Rhule, but said Chesney is the guy )

I will say when you read his bio it’s pretty impressive from the standpoint that the first three programs he took over were terrible to bad and he quickly turned them into big winners. Still a big jump up from Salve Regina, Assumption, Holy Cross and JMU to the Big Ten. I understand Cignetti came from
JMU but he also was a longtime Division 1 big school assistant during his career.

So far, the only smoke around him has come from some podcasters not well connected to PS and a couple message boards. No saying it won't or shouldn't be him and it might be a good thing if it were him. My thinking is Kraft isn't looking for someone to take a chance on. Coming to PS would be a very big step up.

The devil is in the details, so it's obviously hard to tell if Chesney would be a good hire, but I'd rather have someone on an upward trajectory than a retread that's proven to be mediocre or have warts that make it unlikely they'll be able to re-establish a consistently good program.

I wouldn't be crossing Chesney off the list based on the information currently available. It's hard to establish a decent college football program up here in New England, at any level. The fact he was able to do it at 3 different stops is a definite positive. And now he seems to have carried it over to an FBS program (granted, he didn't have to rebuild that one). He's superficially a much better risk than Rhule, for example. The big obvious question mark is can he bring in the big recruits.

OSU made a great hire with Tressel who was at YSU. You really never know. Eventually, a coach like Chesney probably is going to get a job at a Power 4 school.

and somehow from their he went to Dickinson, must be wicked smart , I am sure he'll figure it out. BTW look at his coordinators, they didnt just follow him around, they went out and got some outside knowledge.

Agree. The other question mark is can he make the jump from small pond to ocean.

He was also an assistant coach under Rip for 15+ years before landing the HC job. He knew his way around, so to speak.
