That offense with so many tight sets and often employing multiple tied ends is the antithesis of what Dana has run in the past.

I personally love seeing Nebraska utilize the TE talent we so often have at NU! And Johnson’s burst at the LOS was better than I expected.

However, I fully expect this offense to evolve over the year if that power approach doesn’t become more successful. We absolutely MUST rush for more than 108 yards if this is the approach.

Except for a couple throws to Collins and Key against zone coverage, we had next to zero vertical passing game. I was especially hoping to see Barney on some downfield routes. That kid is a dawg.

Hoping to see some of that first-to-second-game improvement we always hear about. (And, given the competition, should expect.)

GBR!!!

Oh, and as for using Haarberg to carry on the tush push … how long before we see him peel off for a run or pass to an open receiver? 😎

That could be!

Plus, that is the only way he is going to see the field. That guy is just not going to play much.

Play calling by necessity is going to remain the same. Holgerson has few options when your running game stinks. Teams now know they can stop our run with the four dudes and then drop seven or eight into coverage. That is why we had to dink and dunk it down the field with short passes that were really nothing more than substitutions for running. Until we get a consistent run game this pattern will continue. But our line simply does not run block well.

Maybe. But Johnson still ran for over a hundred. But he obviously needs some serious backup support.

I’ve bittched in the past about not running more two-back sets to establish a power run game. Last night I liked how Dana used TEs/HBs in motion to provide more blocking at the point of attack.

Was it UCLA who played cover three last year and we couldn’t figure it out?
Seems the best ways to beat it are to run deep patterns between the safeties to pull them one way or the other and run passes underneath the coverage both in and outside. We just did not do a good job, once again of taking advantage of that. It’s not like we don’t have a stable of WRs to take advantage of this.

I will say it now, we miss Dowdell. There doesn’t seem be anything behind Johnson which is really concerning. We have no power back apparently. When we get down near the goal line, things get dicey.

Seems like we could have included our TEs in the game a bit more, perhaps in the space behind the LBs and in front of the safeties or in the seams created by the WRs pulling safeties with them.

no matter what, it comes down to execution and we did not execute consistently well last night. No way this coaching staff can be happy with this.

Take what’s there, win the game. Work with what you have….why do some people find a problem with that? If we don’t have ability to
Exert our will what we did was good enough.

Johnson is a better power back than Dowdell. You are correct in there is zero depth behind him. Mozee is small, slow, and bounced every carry outside. Maybe Nelson can develop into a viable option?

I have said this once and ill say it again, we will be lucky to win one game this Nov because of a lack of talent, development, and recruiting at the RB position.

This scheme blows let’s just be blunt. It’s an overly complex “pro-style” that went out of style a decade ago in college. That one RPO we ran on the 3 yard line for the final touchdown was a thing of beauty. Mind you most modern college offenses all over the country run them dozens of times a game.

Those stretch and sweep plays to Bonner were the calling card of Satt. He seems to still have plenty of influence

what we saw last night were all the hallmarks of a playcaller & QB with zero confidence in their OL

nothing more, nothing less

The coaches liked Nelson in the summer and fall camp. Last night was the not the optimal time to debut as a RB on a play where the opposing DL pretty much knows you are carrying. It would be interesting to know whether Ives is really ready yet from the hammy strain. He has more of a thump factor than the other backups.

How do you quantify “best in a decade”?
We are an above average OL. Much better than the dumpster fire of an OL we have experienced from 2015 to this season.

This is the culmination of bad recruiting starting with Bo in 2013. The lack of recruiting and development didn't officially stop until Rhule was hired. Building depth and talent on the OL can't happen over night.

Our OL did fine against multiple NFL prospects on Cincinnati's defense.

2 parts hopium combined with a heaping spoonful of "I have no f'ing clue what I'm watching"
Hopium? Did you miss the post where I say we will be lucky to win one game this November because our RBs and DTs are in shambles?

Come back when your football knowledge expands past coaching your kids flag football team.

Everything I read and hear from players and people who watch some practice is that Nelson is better than Ives. 🤷

having the best OL in a decade should raise the ceiling of the RB room, no? RBs - the most plug-and-play position in the sport - are a reason we won't win games?

and you're telling me to expand my football knowledge?

funny!

We need to run a few designed qb runs per game to loosen up the defense, problem is if DR gets hurt the season is basically over.

Johnson is an average B10 RB with zero depth behind him. Our OL is slightly above average. The two combined make up for a very average run game, which is better than anything this past decade. A decent OL doesn't automatically make an average RB a stud.

Did you forget how bad our OL was?

I’m most concerned about how Cinci moved the ball on their last two drives.
Im more concerned about our lack of depth and talent at DT and RB. The last two drives didn't change my views on that fact either.

3 years and Barthel hasn't developed one fvcking player??? When will people see the writing on the wall and get this bum out of our program.

Our O-Line last year was a 4.5 on a scale of ten. This year? Maybe 5-5.5.. Slightly above average. At this rate, to be good (7.5) or great (9+) it will take at least three more years but who is gonna teach them? Yeah, we don't have that person on staff yet.

you apparently don't understand how bad our OL remains.
