It's possible. He wants to be a coach someday, which is why he went to MSU to learn under Izzo. He's never going to be more than a practice player in the Big Ten.

You mean like Johnny Trueblood. We'll take him.Winking If he can knock down a 3, there's a spot for him on the roster. We HAVE to find guys who are automatic from 3.

Unrelated to this situation, I’ve always felt that if the coach’s son is on the team, he should have to be on scholarship. Otherwise you just give the coach a $50K bonus for brushing his teeth every day, and he gets a free player.

Is a coach's kid being on the team without a scholarship different than a Dr's kid who may have been worthy of a scholarship walking on? We've had a few kids like that on the football team over the years.

That’s only similar if the University is paying the doctor millions of dollars - which does happen sometimes. But I’m not talking about every player whose parents make a lot of money.

The question is how do you determine if the kid is worthy of a scholarship to that institution or not. IMO the McCaffrey kid isn't. Sounds like Hoiberg's isn't. McDermott I think was on scholarship at Creighton. I guess I just don't know of many coach's kids on teams who were worthy of a scholarship who didn't get put on scholarship.

I actually think the NCAA has the right answer for that, at least for FB. If the coach's kid has an offer from another D-1 program, he has to go on schollie. If he doesn't, he can walk on.

Not sure if the rules are the same for BB. But that seems like a reasonable standard for revenue sports.

Pretty sure Doug went off scholarship his sr year when Gibbs got a 6th year. Think family of employees get a discount on tuition at creighton.

Well the thing that made me consider this is when Bryce Alford, who had been on scholarship for three years at UCLA, announced that he was giving up his scholarship his senior year so that UCLA could add another recruit. So in that situation, how do you stop UCLA from just paying Dad the difference?

Financial records would be able to tell if they gave him the money. NCAA would be all over that.

McCaffrey isn't worth a scholarship? Pass the drugs when you're done, please.

Coach McDermott paid the entire tuition, room and board. Had he not, and they took the tuition waiver/ discount, Creighton would have had to count Doug as one of the 13 scholarships.

At most schools, the bonuses to coaches need to be included in the contract and approved by the appropriate persons. If a coach was given a random $100,000 bonus or $100,000 raise, the summer before their kid goes off scholarship, it would have been too easy for someone to report that and for it to be investigated.
