There was concern about how cheap/expensive it would be for him to leave. His ISU contract was built for him to walk away if he got an NBA head coaching offer, but had steep penalties if he took another college job.

LJS and OWH articles both lay out the retention bonuses and departure penalties well. Not as easy for Hoiberg to leave for the NBA as it was at ISU (seems comparable to those proportions if I'm recalling correctly, just on a slightly larger monetary scale), but certainly not insurmountable for an NBA team to cover. Similar for departing for another college job to his penalties at ISU: that school REALLY needs to want him.
