i know hobbs wants to do a “national search” so that he can’t be criticized that he already had ash’s successor lined up, but we all know that Schiano is the right coach at exactly the right time that we need him.

Plus, by dicking around we are losing very value time.

While Nunzio coaches the rest of this year, Schiano can be recruiting, closing ( which is what he does best) the deal with top recruits, and researching and putting together the best staff possible.

Don’t fool around hobbs!!!!!

Hire Schiano ASAP!!!!!

Remember, signing day is really in December!!!!

We need Schiano on board sometime in October the latest.

So , we have an opening and you don’t want the AD to do a search for the right candidate. If that happened and the new coach falls on his face, the AD and Rutgers would get crushed by the media. Maybe there is a better candidate out there then GS

We all know there isn’t a better candidate for Rutgers at this time.

Narduzzi isn’t coming
Urban isn’t coming
Morehead isn’t coming

Time is wasting!!!

Our choices are Jones and Schiano.

Schiano is the better choice.

Schiano is the best and only choice right now.

Don’t wait!!!

Let’s stop with narduzzi please , he does not have the juice or splash we need. Very underwhelming if he is picked.

Hobbs is already patting himself on the back for getting back the over 10,000 season tickets sales he lost.

There is no guarantee he gets them back anytime soon.

I sure hope Hobbs isn't taking your attitude on the search.

If already he knows a huge chunk of the fanbase will support a Schiano hiring AND that Schiano wants the job, that is even MORE reason why he shouldn't rush to make the hire.

He can afford to spend a couple of weeks checking into some of the candidates like Moorhead that people think are unrealistic with a Schiano hire in his back pocket. Most people thought the idea of Mullen coming to RU was unrealistic for the last hire but it is rumored RU got into some significant discussions with his camp before it fell apart over $$$.

My point is he can spend “a couple of weeks” testing the waters, but NO MORE.

Schiano has always been our answer.

Can’t waste too much time.

We can’t lose this recruiting class.

Signing day is in DECEMBER!!!

This sounds great but someone like Moorhead won’t even consider this or any other job for another 6-7 weeks. I’m not saying rush to hire anyone but if you have your guy identified already, and he’s available, there’s zero benefit to waiting until the eve of the December signing period.

The OP is right - Give it three weeks and get him on-board. This idea that we have to interview people is so small time. We are not hiring a computer programmer etc. We pursue and negotiate - the formal interview is just another myth perpetuated on this board along with "oh my we have no money"

No one here knows if Greg is wanting to come back to RU.

My guess is that he wants to evaluate other HC opportunities for himself and those opportunities won’t be available for another 8 weeks.

Why should Greg limit himself by signing on with RU now instead of waiting a short while till other opportunities are there?

The downside of missing out on a better coach than Schiano is much greater than the upside of an extra month of recruiting. NJ's top recruit is uncommitted, but the next 8 are committed to OSU, PSU, A+M, etc. and aren't flipping.

There is no rush. A mid-November hire still gives the coach a month before to recruit before the early signing day.

The only rush to hire Schiano is from people romanticizing what he did last time, and they are talking like getting him back is going to be like Michigan State getting Nick Saban to return.

If GS has no interest in coaching here again he would have put out a "thanks but no thanks" statement by now. This whole scenario so far has played out just like the in the know people have surmised. I expect a mid to late October signing with a staff in place by years end. Thank you this message will probably repeat.

It's a negotiation. Schiano wants the most money he can get, Hobbs wants him to work for free. It's a dance, it has to play out. Patience. If Schiano is the only candidate his price goes through the roof.

And, that in a nutshell is the reason Schiano is not the best person available for the job. That, and the fact he's a lousy 'on the field' Head Coach...

You guys need to understand this is also the highest paid person in the State of NJ to be hired. There are protocols that HAVE to be followed in such a search. Probably have to classify a national search, accept/review applications, receive approvals from many boards, background testing, etc. It takes a little time.

What makes you think Schiano will even come close to his previous success here? What other coach has been able to come back and achieve anything close to their previous success? I admire and respect what Schiano did for the program, but there is nothing yet that convinces me that he is the best hire right now. He's an easy, comfortable hire. I get it. But let's all calm down and do this the right way. You can't go home again. Let's move forward.

No, not if I was him. He's a failed Coach, who is looking for a lifeline to revitalize his career. His buddy in New England, gave one. He bolted. His other buddy tried to help with a DCoord. at Ohio State gave him one, he failed. So, now 15 years after leaving and taking his staff with him from Rutgers, failing at the Pro level(miserably), he wants to negotiate a top salary, based on what!? Yes, get paid, but not on the level of other successful B1G coaches.

I would have hoped GS would have been a done deal BEFORE the firing and that this delay is just for effect. That is, that it is being strung out for show.. for timing of news cycles.. for coordination with some other big news.. new donors or something.

Now, if that turns out to be the case this is very good news.. it would show the AD has stepped things up and is operating on a higher level than we have seen before.

You have a much more altruistic view of the world than me. In my world, people, especially NCAA head coaches strive to make as much as possible, and head coaches of National Champions and Super Bowl winners don't give away DC positions based on friendship.

Patience. The idea that we shouldn't waste our time if we're already set on our guy is sensible. But a thread called "Hire Schiano Already!!!!" is kind of silly. It's been like 48 hours. If we announced a hire today plenty of people would skewer it based on a lack of due diligence. Putting out feelers to multiple candidates makes sense for leverage (which we should all care about because we need more resources for staff budget), and hearing different visions for how to right this ship can only help.

If a month from now we're still nowhere, different story. But take the next week or two to be as certain as possible we're getting this right. The entire program depends on it.

If Greg comes back and underperforms as HC at RU the Greg posse will blame it on Hobbs and everyone else, including RU fans. It’s already baked into the cake.

He's the only one since Burns who got us to a bowl game.

I know a bunch of you guys don't like his style.. but why do you constantly discount what GS did here and what he MIGHT be able to do if he came back? Don't you think his first stewardship here has earned him the chance?

Not if....when. So why bother?
That is simply not true. If GS underperforms even his fans will say it. But its you critics who will force GS fans to defend him even as he "makes the sausage". You won't give him a moment's peace to get to work.. to take chances. You did it the first time around as well. By year 3 you wanted to lynch him. We won't forget that.

1. That was 10 years ago in the Big East. EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED!
2. No other coach (that I am aware of) has ever matched his previous performance the second time
3. It earns him a shot at consideration hopefully against a variety of other quality candidates, not a rubber stamp hire.

If he is the best chance at winning as Hobbs says, then fine. I'm not convinced he is. That's all.

Lance Leipold from Buffalo is an intriguing choice. He's accomplished a lot with so little to work with. Recruiting Buffalo is a lot more challenging than recruiting Rutgers. I don't think he'd scoff at an opportunity to coach in the Big 10.

1) GS had to recruit to Big East Rutgers with ESPN / ACC attacking the Big East at every turn. Now he'd have a Big Ten conference to recruit to. So this issue is a wash to me. It was fair to expect Big East championships and he did not deliver.. in the Big Ten East it will be awhile before sane people could expect championship contention. Meanwhile GS would have improved the chances considerably.

2) BILL SNYDER

3) fair enough.. except it may be in R best interests to move quickly.. BEFORE other candidates become available at seasons end.

but we all know that Schiano is the right coach at exactly the right time that we need him.

We don't know that. Schiano might be a popular choice, especially with a segment of the fanbase. But he is hardly a safe, or risk-free choice.

It isn't 20 years ago any more, and if he came back to Rutgers, Schiano would be 20 years older, with 20 more years of successes and failures which impact his personality and reputation.

Part of Schiano's success 20 years ago was to drive Rutgers to make the transition from Grunninger-era D1AA-type infrastructure to a D1A-type infrastructure. That is no longer a job he needs to do. As Hobbs indicated in his press conference yesterday, Rutgers may have to continue to close the gap with top B1G programs, but the big pieces of our infrastructure are in place. Schiano doesn't need to get the AD to put that in place.

Part of Schiano's success 20 years ago was to sell a vision of what Rutgers could become. He can't sell that same 20-year-old vision again, because he already has shown that while he succeeded at part of that vision, he failed at other parts, and he jumped ship after hitting a plateau. And while he could certainly sell a new realistic vision of hitting a plateau far better than what we had under Ash, that is not as inspirational as the vision he relied on 20 years ago.

It is not 20 years ago, and thing have changed. Rutgers has changed. Schiano has changed.

It is possible that Schiano could come back and replicate the success he had 20 years ago. It is even possible that he could come back and surpass the success he had previously. But it is also possible that he could come back and fall short or fail. And that is a huge risk and a very realistic risk.

And if Schiano comes back and fails, then what is the next step. Are we stuck with a coach who failed as a retread, with a long contract, huge buyout, and now the reputation that no one can succeed at Rutgers, not even the guy who caught lightning in a bottle 20 years ago.

I believe there are much better options. I believe that there are other coaches who have shown the ability to win elsewhere, who can bring new vibrancy and vision to Rutgers, and have new success here, without all the risk that a Schiano retread would bring. And if none of those coaches are out there, then we can fall back to rehiring Schiano. But he should be one of our last choices, not the first choice.

Our fanbase matches the programs energy.. Such a losers mentality to beg for this piss poor game day coach to be rehired. He's gonna scrap for 5-6 wins a year because that's all he'll be capable of in the b10. We're gonna get blown out alot too with this deer in the headlights schiano clown
