Hire Greg Schiano as Defensive Coordinator

Pay him 1M, If he gets whacked by OSU. Much cheaper to pay up for Schiano, then Pay Ash’s buyout. Who else is going to give Schiano a Million Bucks? He made 1.5 Million last year at Ohio State.

We turn things around, Ash gets the Midwest job he’s always coveted, Schiano slides back into the HC spot, and everyone lives happily ever after.

And if Greg gets another HC job somewhere else, so be it. He can do the DC job better than anyone else.

This is the kind of “Boss Move” that good programs make to be successful. For a Million Bucks, Schiano would put his ego aside. And if you can get him cheaper, then so much the better.

He will work for less as the alternative is:

"The maximum weekly benefit in the Ohio unemployment benefits program is $387." :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hobbs should strap them on,name Schiano as D Cord and essentially 'HC in waiting'.
Then again that would take out of box thinking and a bold move on Hobbs part.Maybe he would have to consult his and Ash agents first to get permission?

He clearly is not going to get any higher at OSU even if they don't let him go.
Unfortunately, Greg's aura is long faded from the coach of the year award that most likely was a major factor in getting the Tampa job.
But, his utter failure at the NFL, Tenn. fiasco and the Paterno thing has made him persona non grata pretty much everywhere. The only place that he could ever hope to get a HC job in the bigs is, ironically, back at RU.
However, not everyone would want him back even here. That includes both fans and administration for numerous reasons all of which have been bantered here for years.
Quite a conundrum.

Zero chance in hell his ego allows him to work under Ash at RU.

This, but the OSU fans sitting around me at the game on Tuesday seemed pretty certain that Schiano wouldn't be back next season. So we'll have to see how things play out for him.

Poor GS. What did TB pay him as a HC? I’m sure he needs the money.

Why do people want to go back to him? It's like going back to an old GF just because she became available.

I give ya that Ash sucks and should be replaced. But trying to revive the past is also a mistake. There is no guarantee that a second stint with Greg brings the same success. This isn't the Big East, and 2nd chances usually fall miserably.

I would prefer to find a younger guy who's runs the spread. It's easier to recruit kids to play in a fun offense.

Hire GS as head coach and demote Ask to Def C. Now that would make the most sense.

Temple apparently interviewed him the first time around. According to Narducci, Temple is interviewing 3 or 4 people over the weekend, maybe one of them is GS. If he wants to rehabilitate his career, he should practically pay Temple to let him be the coach for 2 or 3 years and train Fran Brown to take over and then he can move on to a bigger and better gig. Any coach that takes that job is almost guaranteed to win for the next two years with Russo at QB and the kids they have on defense coming back.

I don't see the best Football Coach in RU history, 2006 Coach of the Year, coming to work for the worst head coach in RU history. I think he would do TV work or be an NFL assistant first, and bide his time for when Hobbs is fired around 2020 and the new AD starts over.

Agreed. In the end, (initial financial windfall aside) leaving Rutgers for Tampa backfired big time for him in ways I'm sure he never imagined.

How about, instead, Hire GC as head coach and make Ash the DC, negotiate a salary cut, but extend his contract

Huge Schiano fans and knew him in HS. He was not a much better coach his first 3 years than Ash has been. Defensively I give him an edge but not a huge edge. Rallying the troops and creating a buzz all are in favor of Schiano. But he made some mistakes his first 3 years and admitted as much. He hired some good coaches to help him out and improved as a game day coach over time.

I don’t know if Ash can make the same leap that Schiano did or not. But their first 3 years were pretty similar.

People forget that Greg was 34 years old when he was named HC at Rutgers. Ash was 42. If their 1st 3 years were similar, special kudos to Schiano considering the burden of poor facilities, lack of fan/student-athlete support , weak roster and countless additional program deficiencies he inherited in December of 2000.

And you forgot that Europe is to Ash is what Florida was to Schiano.

Schiano improved RU to 5-7 in his 3rd year, Ash took RU to the depths of D1 with a 1-11 epically horrendous 3rd year.
The comparison is valid for their first 2 years, by the 3rd they are going in opposite directions.

I was talking game day mistakes but to your point that made Schiano 8-27 and Ash is 6-30. Year 4 we slipped back to 4-7 and 1-6 in the Big East. Thank god Temple was so bad back then.

I’m just saying you can’t call one the best and one the worst at this point in time because they are pretty similar. I doubt Ash gets a 5th year if his 4th year is as bad as 2004 was so we may may never know if the guy can do the job. I’m just glad we stuck with Schiano and also very happy Syracuse fired Pasquoloni and we got Rice and Greene. Without Cuse 2006 would not have been so special. Not sure why so many in this board hate Syracuse. I thank them in my sleep.

Good point. Schiano was a whiz kid. He coached under Paterno, jimmy Johnson and Wanny in the NFL. He picked up bits and pieces from each and we often heard he ran RU like and NFL program which is why so many of his players transitioned well into the NFL.

I don't think so. You gotta take that shot and his Tampa tenure ain't the reason he's not getting a job. I mean, NFL coach is the ultimate end game for a Schiano, and it's not like he hasn't been able to find work since. If his OSU defense didn't stink it up this year, he'd be getting more attention.

No guarantee he would have been ultimately more successful as a blue blood college HC - or even here at RU in the B1G. You take your NFL shot.

I hope we see 4-7 next year. I think 2-10, 3- 9 more likely. Ash's biggest problem is the QB position. It's a mess and will prevent him from succeeding here.

Art had a terrible year but he should improve like Teel did. The difference is Teel had a very good OL. If we can run the ball and protect Art you gotta hope he gets better. Remember the first few QB’s Schiano had were not lighting it up either. Teel came in at a good time and developed nicely in his third year. Hart was a solid QB at this level and then Teel was a notch up. Maybe it will be the next guy or a grad transfer but as a Rutgers fan I hope Art is the next Teel.

Teel showed he could play the QB while at Bosco. When has Artur showed that he could play the position? Not at IMG, not last year, maybe running the veer at Old Bridge when he didn't have to read defensive backs?

Dumb thread . Ash wouldn’t make that move and nether will schiano. Coaching defense is the least of ash’s problems .
