KnightShift.....I agree with what you say about Cincinnati except the pork roll thing. Pork roll is just bland, wider kielbasa that we traditionally put on egg sandwiches. Whoever says pork roll is anything more is just a homer.

Southern Ohio's comfort food staple is goetta, which I am sure you heard of....much more flavorful and versatile than pork roll.

pork roll is nothing like kielbasa. take it from someone who stocks up on the stuff when back in NJ. Pork roll is more bacon tasting, but better.

Never heard of goetta tho might have to see if I can get it up north. edit: you can make your own goetta. pork roll not so much

pork roll like bacon ? c'mon now. Cut a piece kielbasa and a same-sized piece of pork roll, then heat on a griddle. You would not be able to taste the difference. It's almost the same exact (bland) thing in a different shape. True.

yes ! not just any kind of chili but local Cinci flavored with cheese. Skyline Chili.

More than pork roll defines NJ, Skyline (style) chili defines Cinci....on par with chicago and deep dish pizza.

fry it up crispy, its bacon-esque. Pork roll is way more salty. kielbasa is not even that good, I can get that whenever I want. pass.

But in all fairness I'll try to fry it up like that. if it's even close I'd be happy.

I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with @RUinOhio on this one. Anyway, my original pork roll comment was somewhat tongue in cheek, but merely reflects that you can take a kid out of Jersey, but you can't take the pork roll out of the kid. Hoping Elijah Robinson feels the same way.

I will agree with you on the Skyline chili defining Cincinnati. Best thing we took from there. My wife makes it at least twice a month. Matter of fact, took some to work today. But NJ is the Pork Roll State.

@HeavenUniv. --you have to try a Skyline chili recipe (cinnamon and cheese!) over spaghetti. It will taste great while you listen to Lawrence Welk records on the gramaphone!!!!

Mad Dog was allowed to use a credit card for EMERGENCIES only at UCINN.

When I started seeing charges to Skyline Chili I questioned him.

"Dad, Coach Hiestand wants me at 300 pounds. I go there at 11PM to load up before I go to bed." (He was 255 at the time.)

Charges approved; He got to 305 as a Senior.

Old NJSP saying; "If it's free, it's for me."
Long time ago now.

Big Will - Assuming you're the guy with the kid (now man) that went to Illinois, good to see you on the boards. Don't be a stranger. You're from Manasquan right? I'm looking to move to that area after my daughter finishes high school.

Nice to hear.
You will have a nice welcome wagon--Me, @knightfan7 , @e5fdny , and I believe @Rutgers1976 are in the Manasquan area.

We met at a tailgate earlier this season.

Never been there. How's the food?

Last and only time in a while was Father's Day. Entree only OK. Onion soup was good. I did sit at the bar a couple times years ago because a friend liked it but not one to spend time in a bar in general.

I loved going to Rod's in Madison when I lived up north.

i am curious. other than the tax and the cost of living, what do you like about TX?
i now have 2 extended families in TX. they love it too but mostly because of cost of living.
For me, I've been in Texas since '93 and moved to the Dallas burbs in '16.

While there isn't a state income tax our property taxes are rather high, relatively speaking to what it might've been had we had state income taxes.
And yeah, 500K buys a decent house for sure! I know my house would sell for about 420K and be worth 800-900K in many states just based on house size and yard size (5-3-3 @3300sq ft and a quarter-acre lot.)

The biggest concern for most Texans in the Dallas area is "don't California my Texas!" (I've even seen shirts sold saying that.)

What I've learned is that people think Texans are friendly, and they are, but that ALL people in the U.S. are friendly. Even "damn Yankees." It's just that life in the northeast, and in NJ and NY in particular, is much more, um, frenetic so people THINK northerners aren't friendly.

It did take me a while when I first got here to get used to people waving hello at me and saying "Good Morning" and all that...and as my wife told me early on after we got married 25 years ago to QUIT HONKING at people as soon as the light turned green because it might get me shot! :Laughing

Texas is hot as hell...in a bad way. Austin is OK. I'd live in Jersey any day of the week though.
