discovered this week that I need a hip replacement. What can I expect for recovery time? Really don't want to be not walking for 3 months. I hear the procedure has gotten much easier in recent years.

I had one done, and its not bad. You will be walking the day of surgery. I used a cane for a week and then didn't need one any more. Physical therapy is pretty easy. Make sure your surgeon uses the Anterior Approach. Se the link:

Sorry to hear this Dave. You have been through enough already.

I cannot speak from experience, but hip replacements sound like they have very good outcomes nowadays. If you are hurting now, you won't be soon after the procedure. That is what I hear from people who have had them.

The recovery from THAs is usually quite easy relative to TKAs. There are pro's and con's to both anterior and posterior approaches to the hip. If you are comfortable with your surgeon, do not ask him to use an approach other than the one he uses routinely. The anterior approach has been gaining popularity but make sure this is your surgeon's preferred technique

My mother had a hip replacement in her mid-70s several years ago. I was amazed at how quickly she was up and around. She found it easier than her knee replacement, which also wasn't bad.

They are telling me I will be able to walk out of the hospital the next day, that surprised me. Others tell me the same.

Three years ago this month I underwent successful knee replacement, much buoyed by encouraging remarks of others on this board. Words from such notables as The Waterboy (I miss hearing from him) and DocRugby were really helpful in what was admittedly a challenging period of rehab. I've never regretted the procedure, which surely bought me at least 15 years of additional mobility. Something else will get me but the replaced joint will still do well.

My understanding is that recovery from hip replacement is ordinarily less difficult, and I trust yours will be successful. Heed the counsel of DocRugby1 and others, Dave, and know that we're rooting for you. I've never forgotten your kind fellowship on my visit to Kenosha years ago.

The most painful thing about the whole procedure for me was having to piss before they released me. Not sure if it was the pain meds or just a big prostate but I couldn't fill the jug they gave me. So the nurse had to give me a catheter which hurt like hell. But at least I got released!

I just had a hip done two weeks ago. The first week was a bit rough. I'm now using a cane. I expect to be walking without assistance in a couple more weeks.

Do yourself a favor and look at traditional total hip replacement and hip resurfacing (Birmingham Hip). I went went the Birmingham. Whichever procedure you opt for, make sure you go with someone who is well experienced. I went with one of the top Birmingham hip docs in the State of MI.

Dave I’ve got no experience but you’ll bounce right back from it. I tore my calf playing paddle tennis yesterday so we can be gimps together.

Make sure the doctor has performed hundred of these surguroes. Read the reviews. Out here Rush seems to do quite well with surgery.

I can only echo the statements of others as those whom I have known that have undergone the procedure have been happy with the results. Wishing you an excellent recovery as well.

Hey Dave. Because I'm an old guy, many of my friends have undergone hip replacement surgery - 4 this year alone. All have done extremely well. One was back on the golf course in 3 weeks. Another was driving in 10 days. You'll do very well I'm sure. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

I've had both hips done 1988 and 1993. things have improved a great deal. Both were posterior. My 1993 hip has been x-rayed recently and the doctor said their is little wear. In both cases I was back to work within two weeks. As for anterior vs posterior it should be you doctors call it may depend on your physical makeup and other factors. One piece of advice prehab work on building you muscles before surgery it will speed your rehab.

Hey Dave. I had my hip replacement done last year, and wish I had done it sooner. Anterior approach with very little post-op pain, especially compared to knee surgery. Physical therapy before and after surgery makes all the difference in the world. You will be happy with the results.

With the increasing frequency of threads like this, and the relentless march of time, we need to have a separate dedicated Orthopedic Board.

It's likely the anesthesia. I had a similar experience after an operation several years ago. Your prostrate probably doesn't help matters.
