Nice to see my alma mater win one. I think they can win a couple more over Fred T Foard and Saint.
Don't think this coach has any worries this year. I can't say for sure but it's more about keeping the peace and less about wins. Just keep the haves and the have nots happy.
No admin support. Scared of both groups. Everybody in a small system is protecting their own skin. Coaches can come and go but leaders get big checks. Always been that way. Three school systems in little Catawba County is ridiculous. But it has made Newton-Conover one of the best academic schools in the state with the best rolling average non drop out rate in the publics. I'll take that for my kids any day over football.
Helms has a long list of AAU coaches developing kids. Basketball is king in Hickory. Hickory had their chances to make things better in football and spit on it for a long time. They were asked many years to join a youth league that had 32 teams but rejected it for the most part.
Once upon a time Hickory was pretty good at wrestling under a great Hickory soccer and wrestling coach named Morgan. Those kids added immensely to lots of Hickory football teams. That program is absolutely pathetic. And I mean pathetic. They take two schools and put them together to make one middle school wrestling team and still are horrible and low numbers. Even had a state champion from Newton helping at Hickory two years ago as a volunteer. Didn't help.
Five years ago a girl at Hickory was their best wrestler. I kid you not. And she didn't have a winning record. When we wrestled Hickory we sent our JVs in and still usually had 70 point margins.
I've seen the kids at the rec playing basketball and they have talent at skill positions but damn somebody has to block and those kids have exited much like at Newton. Nobody wants to block. Can't make the newspaper blocking. Those same blockers usually play defense as well.
