Turn it over to the SEC Network to see why the Hump is one of the worst atmospheres in the SEC. Auburn has students on three sides of the arena and we have 5-6 sixty year old blue hairs waving their arms behind the visiting goal in the second half right when we need a home court advantage. Do you want our fan base to continue to sit our asses at home all winter instead of making the trip to Starkville?

Quit talking about putting lipstick on a pig and start making plans to replace our (almost) 50 year old arena with a brand new 7-8k arena like our little brothers did. I know you’re not blind, I know we have the money, and I know you read this forum, so do something to make our basketball program exciting again.

thanks for listening to us

John is not a clown, but there are some very important things he needs to address or we are about to get left behind. A new Arena is one of the most important issues he needs to address.

Some simple things can be done (like giving the students seats on three sides near the floor), but we need to be investing for the future.

He seems to not realize that it’s the small things that make alumni, students, and fans support him as an Athletic Director.

John should have never been hired. Never had enough experience to run the whole show. Let him retire gracefully and talk baseball on radio

I feel like renovating instead of building a new arena is a bad idea. Perhaps we are limited by available space on campus, I’m honestly not sure. But I feel like we are making a mistake.

We are making a huge mistake. If we go through with renovating the Hump, it will be 15-20 more years before we are able to replace it. In my opinion, it’s not talked about (bitched about to the University) enough. It’s costly decisions like this that make you lose support of an otherwise loyal fanbase.

Some of our big time alums need to get on this so we can make basketball fun again.

No John wants to save money. Going to be hard getting it since boosters are pissed off right now. There were plans to build a massive new area between the hump and the dorms but it must have been trashed.

And if you have a decade of not figuring out how to get students involved that’s a decade of alumni that someday aren’t gonna become season ticket holders.

Yeah no kidding. I know John reads this board but we will immediately lose his attention with that comment. In fact, that one comment might be the reason we don’t get a new Hump.

Sorry forgot my **

If John Cohen reads this **** then we have bigger problems.

I'd say land wise we are one of the largest in the nation. Plenty of room

I remember seeing plans (I think on the 25 year plan about 15 years ago) to build a new arena that covered the grassy area between Bost and Barr Ave. and the northern end of what is now the Barnes and Noble parking lot. The new area was also to have classrooms in it.

Cohen only cares about Baseball. The fan experience is garbage at all other sports.

I know John Cohen didn’t really have anything to do with it, but State’s fan experience and aesthetics at the football stadium had improved as much or more as any school in the country over the last 8-10 years. In my unsolicited opinion, it went from being an eyesore to being one of the best looking stadiums you’ll see, on TV at least. And the baseball stadium is, obviously, elite. I’m blown away by it, and a little envious if I’m being honest.

With all that said - the Hump is not in the same stratosphere as Davis Wade and Dudy Noble. It’s been hard to believe watching how much the atmosphere and fan engagement has went so far down at basketball games. State’s fanbase was as passionate and engaged as any school not Kentucky’s in the SEC. What’s changed? That’s an honest question.. I know the Rick Ray debacle contributed, but it feels like there’s more to it than that.

I’ve always wondered that too...why are we on the student section side of the court in the second half...it’s asinine

I hate liking your posts.
Your second question has been debated to death. My personal opinion is that, first, we were really bad. Then once we were decent, the combination of bad seating and a team that was just generally not very likeable (i.e. not engaging with fans, not really ever seeming happy to be there) kept people from coming back.
I am highly optimistic that this year will be better, however I agree with everyone that we need a new arena. Commit to basketball. We've been a top program before and we can be again.

not hard to figure out what happend
1. took seats from all the local basket ball fans and gave them to people that don't attend.
2. moved the students
3. fired Stans and hired the program killer -Rick Ray
4. put every game on tv or computer.

RIP Shrump.

I think it was supposed to be across the street from Sanderson, in the lot that was used for RVs during football season. But now there's a dorm and a center for veterans there.

I know most of what we post is BS... but the people who post here are some of the most passionate MSU fans out there. I see no problem with him taking time to read it.

Better than sitting around watching reruns of CSI or whatever the heck 50 year olds watch.

I agree with you on the improved fan experience at the football stadium and I appreciate you noticing and bringing it up. That is a positive and something we can be proud of. However, aside from the new end zone section and the East Side Sky boxes, Davis Wade is a ******** that needs serious improvements. Where most of the normal (not wealthy) alumni sit on the lower West side, the conditions inside the stadium are not great at all. I could go on all day about it.

As far as basketball, there are alot of reasons. It starts off with simply hiring a bad coach and losing games. The student and alumni support started going downhill as our program fell to the bottom of the SEC. The Hump was reseated and it took prime time seating away from loyal fans who showed up to most games, and gave that seating to wealthy donors who could care less. The students were moved into one corner behind the goal and that also killed the atmosphere.

It sucks because even when we have a good team like last year, the fan support is still nothing like what it used to me. Sad really. But we really do have the best baseball stadium in the country and it's not even close. I'm very proud of it, as are most MSU fans.

Regarding the Hump...The bathrooms and concourse definitely need to be improved, but the whole arena itself doesn't need to be replaced. What they got right in building it is the design of seating, shape, and size. What lacks however, is the atmosphere which is due to attendance and seating assignments, not the actual building. The Hump used to be one of the toughest places to play in college basketball and it didn't have anything fancy. Hell, Duke has the best atmosphere and game experience in the world, but yet they play in an 80 year old high school gym.
