Hagans AAU coach called into Kentucky Roll Call yesterday and said the reason Hagans didnt test the waters is because through Cal and that AAU coach.... they already got the info they needed from the NBA. there was no need to test the waters any further.
Thank you for proving my point. Hagans had no reason to test because he was a late second round to undrafted prospect. What decision did he have to make?

We will be young. Its a process. Hard to get 18 year olds to buy in......same song same tune.
As opposed to the top ten classes who were juniors and seniors at UK who only won 4 titles in 50 years before Cal got here. You know- the same song same tune.

I would love to have Herro back.

I wonder what he considers a "high pick" to be?

You told us last week Baker was going to UCLA because they were hiring Earl Watson. If you want to be an insider you have to do more than follow Kyle Tucker on twitter.
That’s false I said IF UCLA hired Watson go back and re read that my man. Nice try though

I think Herro isn’t coming back. But obviously we will welcome him back with open arms if he does.

I'm old so forgive me but I used to look forward to a kid in his jr. and sr. years. Really was going to add. Now, seems that there are alot of Cats on the floor in alot of NBA games. Could have been. How about a thank-you letter from the NBA to the BBN? And good luck to Tyler. He's going to be fun to watch where ever he goes. FCC.

Better delete this real quick before the mob with pitch forks come barking. Apparently, any UK fan wanting fringe 1st round/2nd round players back at UK for our own personal rooting interest is looked down upon these days. Some of the people need to get their head out of their ***. If we lose more than 3, we are not a title contender next year. You’re “brain dead” though if you share the same sentiment. But ultimately, you’re right @ManitouDan. We don’t have the players coming in to get over the hump without some returning experienced talent. Here’s to hoping that Herro or KJ will make a better decision than Lamb, Teague, Gabriel, etc. made and come back to further their mind, body, and game to help both themselves AND UK!

I'm old enough , secure enough , with thick enough skin to not care about the mob .

Smart decision by him to test the waters and get feedback. Look who responded to his instagram post... Maybe????

That message TH posted, is as you would expect, and the smart thing to do.
Anyone that says he is "for sure gone" or he is "for sure returning" is just plain stupid!
Anyone with any chance at being drafted, even late 2nd round, SHOULD test the waters, see what the actual teams/scouts say you need to work on, or maybe you can even move yourself up far enough to get drafted where you want.

The draft rankings mean nothing!!!
It's all about what the teams tell you (or Coach Cal). If you return, how much higher could you reasonably be drafted, increasing your chances at getting more than just that 1st contract and at earning a bigger 1st contract.

Of course he is staying in the draft. Let the pumpers tell it, nobody is leaving.

It's not that you're telling us what we don't want to hear, it's that you're acting as if you have some inside info. Most of us realize that Herto and KJ are likely gone. Anyone, like you, can guess at what will happen and have a chance of being correct.

Wished , for my own rooting interest , that he would stick another year to get in the lottery , but those choices around here are like pipe dreams. It used to LOTTERY pick , I'm gone , now it's I'm somewhere in the 1st round .. I'm gone . Just feels like a rotating door .
Heck we've recently had guys like Briscoe leave for Estonia and Gabriel, who is a g-League'er. At any other school those guys would stick around. It's the culture that Cal's created here.

the silver lining to this dark cloud is: without Herro, we will not be burdened by unrealistic expectations.

You can now safely put me in the camp that believes it is impossible to win the NC, or maybe even get to the FF, without experienced guards. The ones we have coming back, without Herro, will STILL be too inexperienced.

Hagans isn’t testing the waters. Tre Jones isn’t testing the waters. It is the best process only if you are a projected first round/VERY early second round pick. Otherwise, agents are in your ear, friends are in your ear, and family are in your ear to “go get the money” “you’re good enough” when in reality, they need more time. That’s the risk when they sign with an agent. When they sign, I automatically assume they’re gone.

I am sure that they have already received feedback advising them that it wouldn't be in their best interest to do so. What does an agent gain from a percentage of a piddly G League contract? Run the risk of ruining his or her reputation advising a kid that clearly isn't ready that they are to miss out on bigger names down the line? The friends and family issue has always been and will continue to be an issue independent of the new rule or feedback from NBA personnel.

Of course UK would be better with Herro back. Maybe he would be the difference between being a title contender and not having enough pieces to get over the hump. Which seems to be the cycle we are in...either the frosh aren’t really studs (or close enough) during thier first year and/or our returning talent isn’t quite good enough skill-wise.

But no one knows how good the Cats will be or can be. It may depend on whether the frosh are more like the 2017 group or the 2018 and 2019 group AND whether the returning guys make big leaps forward.

What a sharp double edged sword Coach Cal is .. Look at Shae and Tyler ... Its great how he has improved them from 4 stars to 1st round picks , but it sure hurts to lose kids we thought we would have for 2 years .

Cal keeps landing this type of kid precisely because the next group of 2nd tier guys see what he's done with guys in that 15-30 range:

SGA
Bledsoe
Liggins
Booker
Herro

The downside, as you noted, is that we're constantly in rinse and repeat mode with almost zero player retention.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. It will be much the same as this year but with a little less talent. Finish 2-4 in the SEC, top 3-4 seed in the NCAA, but ultimately failing to reach a Final Four or bring home a championship without RETURNING EXPERIENCED TALENT. Honestly, what is so hard to understand about this?

Hagans is fine, but he’s not the right piece we need back. We have someone to replace him in Quickley and Maxey. We don’t have anyone coming in that can make up for a Sophomore Herro’s production. Get your head out of the sand man. We haven’t had a Final Four since we had top 5 players coming in WITH experienced talent returning. The last championship we had was top 5 players WITH key talented experience returning (Lamb, Jones, Miller). Do you notice a trend here or does it fly right over your head? Elite 8’s and 30 win seasons are fine and dandy but ultimately, no one remembers second place (besides 2015 because 38-0).

I disagree about Hagans being the right piece. Last time Cal got a starting pg back we won 38 straight games. Quickley was solid and should be much improved. EJ should be much improved. Sestina should be a great addition.

So what might be hard for you to understand is that not everyone agrees with you. I think this will be a top 5-8 team and right in the mix, barring roster surprises.

I think, like this past year, they will be a title contender, though not a favorite. I don’t think a team like that has an Elite Eight ceiling, any more than I thought TT or Michigan State had an Elite Eight ceiling this past year.

I agree that experienced guards are key to winning it all. I'd love for either Johnson or Herro return, but Hagans returning was best thing to happen for UK. (Also, best thing for Hagans.)

I like having Hagans, Quickley, and Baker. Throw Maxey in the equation and I think it's a good combination of experience and talent.

Looking long term, I think Quickley is exactly what UK needs with 3 yr player. I'd love to see him end up in the league after a great 3rd year. New slogan ... "Three & Flee."
