Building my house, bent over and scooted a ladder out of the way.....BAM! Went down hard on my face, could not move my left side without severe pain, and found out I have a herniated L-3 that is compressing on the Sciatic nerve. I have severe pain down my thigh, then it crosses over to the front of my thigh (it doesn't go all the way to my foot, thankfully).

I've been going to a chiropractor all week, getting him to try to adjust me and get it slipped back in. They doctor prescribed me a steroid and toradol, of which they haven't done anything other than help me gain 5 lbs! Then they wrote me a prescription for flexirill (muscle relaxer) for the spasm I was having in my thigh, of which it did NOTHING either.

I've been putting ice, then heat, then ice, then hot bath, then stretches, wash....rinse...repeat. I'm not going on day #8 and I haven't been able to do anything. It absolutely kills me to walk. It kills me to lay down. The only position that is somewhat comfortable is sitting up (not reclining either). I've had about 5 hours of sleep since last Thursday.

Any thing you guys may pass along to me would be great!

More ice followed with more ice. Naproxen if your doctor says you can take it. Stay off the opioids. Make sure you eat something with it. Sorry for your pain herniated disc suck and take time to recover.

The only thing I can think of will leave you scarred for life. Muscle relaxer and pain killer will help with the radiation of the pain over a period of time. But if the pain subsides to the center of the back except where herniated disc is, it is time to do a self evaluation. A lot of people get absolute relief from that after a few weeks. Listen to Dr as to what you can do thereafter. I fell in Dr parking lot and picked myself up. Unfortunately my healing process had not completed the task.

Some people can work hard enough to build self up to overcome the problem. I was never able to put enough stress on the back to get thru the pain to build muscles required. Tomorrow while standing at the stove to fix breakfast, I can feel my disk starting to hurt from the weight that is following gravity. I quit and bend over flat surface and allow weight to move/stretch off the nerve. Then continue.

It never goes away and my Dr will not allow me to be put asleep to fix my back and both knees. Just a bit limited in my daily activity.

These people don't know what the frack they're talking about. I blew out a disc in 2006, the night of the WVU/Georgia Sugar Bowl. 1.5 cm into my spinal nerve, around the L3. (Can't remember the exact one). I couldn't stand at first, pain was unreal, only position that gave me any relief was on all fours. Was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Dipshits there pumped me full of IV pain killers and sent me home. Two days later I'm back in an ambulance and was sent to a different hospital. They ordered an MRI, but the dipshit I saw there basically said "Take this steroid pack, when it runs out, call my office and I'll schedule a shot and then some physical therapy." Go to his office after a week of pain to get the shot only to be told "We don't take your insurance."

Thank GOD I had scheduled a second opinion with a Doctor recommended to me by some Co-workers. Dr. Hope out of Reston, VA. I hobble into his office for an appointment (about two weeks after blowing the disc) and he says, without even looking at my MRI, "I see about 15 patients a day, I only recommend surgery for maybe 1 or 2 out of that 15, and you're that 1 or 2." He pulls up my MRI and says, "I can't believe the Doctor in Winchester didn't see how badly this has ruptured. He tells me, "You can try the physical therapy route, you can try the chiropractor route, you can try the steroid route, but none of them will repair the damage done to your disc. You'll wake up a year from now, be addicted to pain meds and lose the feeling and use of that leg.

A week later, and after a laminectomy, I was up and completely pain free. 4 years after my surgery, thanks to not exercising and watching my weight, and thanks to packing and lifting heavy boxes, I re-ruptured the same disc. Once a disc ruptures, it is NEVER the same again, will NEVER maintain the same level of strength. After my first surgery I was left with about 85% of the disc. The second rupture was as bad as the first and I had to go under the knife again, and was left with about 60-65%. Knock on wood, I haven't have an issue with my back since. Though I've taken greater care to watch my weight and try to walk and stay active, and when my back starts to hurt there, I stop the lifting and just start walking. After my 2nd surgery I was running 5k about 4 times a week and had ZERO pain, and running/walking seems to help me.

So first thing you need to do is get an MRI. PERIOD. If you've had an MRI you need to determine if the disc is ruptured or not. If it is ruptured, then surgery may be your only option. If not, then you can try the steroid injection and therapy route. If it is surgery, understand that A LOT has changed in 10-15 years, and the type of procedure I had back then has drastically improved, so surgery is not the horrible route people make it out to be. It kept me pain free for the past 10 years, and kept me off pain pills. After my first surgery I was only taking Motrin. Second surgery I took a few muscle relaxers for about a week with Motrin.

I know the pain your feeling. Been there. It sucks. Hang in there and get a second opinion.

Got so damned many who will give an opinion with zero knowledge. You told him what I suggested. After he gets the pain that is centralized in the back at L-3(?) he has to do a self analysis. I never tried the chiro before or after surgery. I gave some other advise that I think you 2nd 'ed. Listen to Dr, the disc was repaired - DAMNED THING WAS NOT FIXED NOR REPLACED. Do not pull it apart or rupture it again. Superman flew away with that first rupture. You are now a mere mortal.

Will you listen to me? Probably not and you will be reminded what that pain was the first time.

Hydrocodone is part of my daily diet. Have Skelaxin for those days that living gets rough. Been taking Opioid for 40 years and now get all of these warnings from Medicare. Have to go to Dr office every 30days for refill. A couple years ago, I could call the Dr to call CVS and renew. Now it is so poisoned that I have to drop the prescription off at CVS on the day it is to be renewed - not a day before or on the day I pick up script at Dr office while driving by CVS.

About 4-5 months ago, the rules say my Dr has to physically see me every 90 days. After 40 years of just calling Dr to call new prescription in to CVS. Damn, they are getting good for Medicare. My Dr is a Kentucky grad. After we greet each other, what do you think we do? Taxpayers pick up tab for $150. After 40 ***** years you would assume that that old bad pill is possibly not going to do any harm to me. Just follow the one in front of you and you will survive this too.

A few years ago, I hurt my back exercising with kettle bells, which I later learned is pretty common. Same pain, from the hip, across the top of the thigh, to the inside of the knee, into the calf.

The only way I could get even a couple hours sleep was in an outdoors recliner that I moved into the living room.

First, the sleep. I live in Colorado, so weed is legal. My wife suggested I try it. 2 puffs and 8 hours of restful sleep every night thereafter. Candy might be easier if you haven’t smoked.

Second, go see a physical therapist to get some back stretches. In the meantime, sit in your chair then lean over and touch the floor and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 2 times x 3 times/day.

Lay on the floor, bring your right knee up to you chest and hold it with you hands for 10 seconds. Repeat twice and repeat with the left leg, then repeat with both legs, sort of like a cannonball at the swimming pool.

Next, lay on you back, bend you right knee up and pull your knee gently to the left with your left hand and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat twice.

There’s an app for iphone/iPad called Yoga for Beginners, mind+body with back-specific stretches.

Third, try laying on you side for 15 minutes with a pillow between your legs, 2 or 3 times per day.

Once I started the pot, I needed no further pain medication. CDC is available everywhere and maybe could help.

I couldn’t walk more than 25’ when I started the stretches but after 6 months, I was walking 5 miles without pain. Initially, I could ride a bicycle without pain even when walking was painful.

Today, I don’t take pills or use pot. I occasionally have some back pain, but it’s always eased by stretching.

See a physical therapist and good luck.

Dr lipzig here in Roanoke fixed my son's herniated disc with microdiscectomy. About three hour surgery. He's highly recommended. @mdeer1 have him a thumbs up. Good luck

I would doubt Medicare pays him $40. Docs can't do it anymore. Unless you've been under a rock, that treatment you've been getting has destroyed a million lives.

This was night #8 with no sleep. The leg nerve pain is by far worse than anything else. I have very little pain at the herniated disc. Just it has trapped the nerve and the pain radiates down to my knee cap. Nothing stops or blocks it. Since the day of injury (Last Friday) I've increased my strength and mobility with just adjustments. But the damn leg isn't getting better. Can't get that nerve calmed down.

Doctor and chiropractor says 2-4 weeks and no surgery and I'll be pain free. But I wonder how long can a person go sleep deprived? I've missed an entire week of work already. Can't afford to miss anymore.

How is the house BTW?

It's coming along wonderfully. I went with the spray foam insulation. Finishing it this week. Acting as my own contractor has saved me thousands. I'll end up with a 3,000 square foot house for around $55/square foot.

My wife does social media and posts pictures. I'll have to see about linking it to show progress. I don't use social media.

For those that responded, Thank you!

My chiropractor says that a herniated disc and pinched nerve like I have is something that should work itself out in 2-4 weeks on its own, that his adjustments are just helping my spine stay healthy and to help to alleviate some of the pain that is accompanying the condition.

I've read horror stories online where people would have this pain for 3 months, 6 months, 2 years!!!!! Say it ain't so!

UPDATE****

WOW! After posting this early this morning after day #8 of no sleep, I decided to do anything and everything.

1. Took hot bath, soaked in Epson salt
2. Scrapped the prescription meds and chose to go the route of OTC Aleve Gel caps
3. Went to chiropractor
4. Used my father-in-law's inversion table
5. Came home, forced myself to walk some.....10 feet at a time
6. Got up from a 45 minute nap, walked more......work the stiffness and pain in legs out
7. Drank a glass of warm vinegar water....YUK!
8. All day drank cups of water and Powerade.....chiropractor suggested I was dehydrated causing some of my symptoms of cramping
9. Put on ice pack for 30 minutes directly on herniated disc
10. Took another hot bath, Epson salt

This evening, I'm 80% pain free. I found a small foam soccer ball my daughter had and put it between my back and the back of the couch.....used it to massage for 30 minutes at a time.

Now, I'm excited but cautious. It is the first mostly pain-free day I've had in a week. I hope I'm able to get some sleep tonight and wake up tomorrow even better. I guess I need to think for the best, prepare for the worst though! Fingers crossed.

Walking always helps my back. Standing, not so much, but walking and even running, always seemed to help me in the long run.

I'm a believer in an inversion table. I've used it the past two days and most of my leg pain is gone. I can now walk longer distances before my thigh starts aching from the trapped nerve. Hopefully I can get a full night sleep tonight and be on the road to recovery tomorrow!

Of course I could always watch our offense on replay and probably get a jump start on going to sleep. That was ugly today.

Get the MRI. Go to the top specialist you can find. Only real way to know how bad you f’d your self up.
