There is an underlying desire on the part of many officials to try and knock Kentucky off its pedestal. It has been this way for a long time. Some may see ATM as a good team to really begin to challenge Kentucky so we no longer "own" the SEC in basketball.

So, you're saying Hump slammed the ball down in a "unsportsmanlike way or was exhibiting frustration or taunting"? Please explain which it was and how you know this was the case.
The kid seemed pumped up that TAMU missed the shot, he got the board and was headed to the line to try and seal the win.
Please go back and read my post where I said "THE CALL WAS HORRIBLE". You missed that, didn't you?? I was agreeing (as an ex-official) with you. In fact, I gave your post a "LIKE"!!!

But I was alluding to your statement that slamming the ball down is not mentioned in the rules.

It is...implicitly...and it is explained and illustrated in the Case Book (which is the twin required book to guide Officials.

What you said is correct...and the call was horrible. But it is considered "unsportsmanship" to slam the ball down in frustration or a taunting way. Things like that are not in the rules but are explained in the "Case Book".

Unsportsmanlike conduct has always been. "T" and throwing the ball down on the floor has always been considered unsportsmanlike conduct.

The case book also says that players that leave the bench and fans that come into the floor is a tech as well.

Well, I don't have to say anything. The rule books doesn't allow for a technical to be called in the situation that came up tonight. Maybe you have another rulebook at your disposal that none of us have seen?

One can argue whether the ref should've called or overlooked it. But if you don't think it's within the rules for a ref to call a tech on a player who throws the ball down on the floor, then I don't know what to tell ya except you're wrong.

So until they stop calling it on us. Stop doing it. Not that of a thing to not do.

Agreed, but in that scenario tonight, it's at least forgivable. That was the biggest defensive stand of Humphries young life.

Slamming the ball down as Hump did...not unsportsmanlike, not taunting...does not mandate a technical being called. He wasn't angry at an official, wasn't directing anger toward another player at all. He was excited and passionate about making a big play. If he were trying to make a ref look bad or threaten an opposing player, I wouldn't have a problem with it. You don't call a foul on a kid for being passionate about the game. Adams didn't have to call that technical. He could have...and should have...warned Hump about it and moved on. That would have been the smart and responsible thing to do.

If he had slammed the ball down in anger at a ref or another player, or even to taunt I could see it. But, he did it because he made a passionate play to get a win for his team. And Pat Adams penalized him for it. Apparently you and Pat are on the same page. Good luck with that.

Agree with most of this. All I disagreed with was the premise that he did something that wasn't allowed by rule.

Never surprised in college basketball at any call that benefits the home team in a close game especially in the closing seconds. It's not just the SEC.

That's not the point. It's always been the case that taking 3 steps is walking but the refs found away to not decide the game on that one. The point is there was no harm done by what Humphries did. It could have been just a warning and in 90% of the cases like that it would have been. A&M had a player slam the ball down earlier in the game and it wasn't called. So why call that one?

No sir, 3Rex. You are absolutely WRONG...unless you are saying Humphries was reacting in an unsportsmanlike manner toward the Offiicials, Texas A&M, or the fans. And clearly he was not.

Class A Unsporting Technical Infractions

Art. 1. A player or substitute committing an unsportsmanlike act including, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Disrespectfully addressing an official or gesturing in such a manner as to indicate resentment.
  2. Using profanity or vulgarity; taunting, baiting or ridiculing another player or bench personnel; or pointing a finger at or making obscene gestures toward another player or bench personnel.
  3. Inciting undesirable crowd reaction.
  4. Contacting an opponent, while the ball is dead, in an unnecessary, unacceptable and excessive manner.
  5. Flagrantly (severe or extreme) contacting an opponent while the ball is dead.
  6. A flagrant noncontact infraction that involves extreme, sometimes persistent, vulgar, abusive conduct when the ball is dead or live.
  7. Participating after having been disqualified (noncontact flagrant 2 technical).
  8. Leaving the playing court and going into the stands when a fight may break out or has broken out (flagrant noncontact infraction).
  9. Fighting as in Rule 10-5.
  10. Disrespectfully contacting an official

As you can see, what Humphries did is not listed. It would fall under the discretion of the officials. Pat Adams did not have to give Humphries a T because he was excited about making a potential game winning play. Don't let anyone tell you differently. It IS NOT the rule.
Yep. Been arguing with people on FB about and copied the whole rules to show them. I was shocked to see that slamming the ball was not specifically listed.

since SEC can not control the officials deciding the outcome of the games according to their preference, The Colleges should vote to play the games without officials.

So you can be unsportsmanlike, as long as your not being so "toward the Officials, Texas A & M, or the fans??? (And I'm not saying or implying that Hump was here)

That is wrong. If a player is using F Bombs continually, a ref can interpret that as unsportsmanlike conduct even if it's not "toward the officials, fans, etc."

You're absolutely wrong

Could you post a link to the section in the Case Book that explains this rule. I'm not saying you're wrong but I looked through the book and couldn't find any mention of this. Thanks.

Another question. did House get the ball released before his foot came down, ala Grayson Allen. I didn't record the game, but it looked like his foot might have came down before he got the shot off.

I am saying that what he did was NOT unsportsmanlike. He reacted with joy to a play. Heck, the ball barely got above his head. And it did NOT delay the game nor incite the fans or show up the Official for a bad call. He just celebrated and immediately composed himself.

Believe me...I DO know what I am talking about. I'll leave it at that, because I don't intend to lay out my credentials. There are several on this board who know who I am.

I would have passed on the call because it was obvious that he wasn't trying to show up the officials..and given the game situation. If you notice when the officials huddled and discussed the call, one of his partners was challenging him on the call. Adams was adament that it should be an unsporting foul for slamming the ball on the floor. I disagree, but Isaac put himself in that position for someone to make a poor decision.

Did you notice that it took like 10 seconds before he called it? The other ref was closer and was not about to call it.

Who else is there to be unsportsmanlike to? Literally the only people left in your Venn diagram is the UK team. Was he being unsportsmanlike to his own team?

In your other example, if a player is continually using profanity not directed at anyone, who the hell is he talking to? Himself? If you're unsportsmanlike against yourself, do you get to shoot your own technical free throws?

We're talking about the actions of people against other people during the course of a game. Sure there is no explicit rule that says you can't call a technical there. But the intemt of the players and the "severity" of their actions has to be taken into account. If you can't see the distinction being made in this thread then I guess there is no point in talking about it.
