Hey Wildcat fans, I have learned to really like your program. You have great people that you can’t help but like. They’re smart and well spoken. The players are a joy to watch on and off the field. I’ve watched a lot of your games over the past few years.
Though your defense has had some problems this year, they’ve been really fun to watch. They have been fundamentally sound. They don’t seem to try to be too complicated. Fundamentals usually break down for 18-21 year olds with complexity. Look at Michigan State in your game on Saturday. Just fundamentally sound at every position. Their defense didn’t do anything special. They are coached well in fundamentals. Each player has been schooled so well that they are extremely confident in their ability. I’ve seen the same from your team.
Your offense is a little different. In my opinion, I believe they are schooled well in fundamentals. However, I think your offense is too complex when it doesn’t need to be. I may be wrong but I heard that your QB has to make the Oline blocking calls, run-pass options calls, and read the entire secondary for pass plays. That’s a lot to put on any 18-21 year old even if he is very smart and a 5 star recruit. This overload will lead to overthinking. And, remember one of the biggest keys in all sports - when you think, you stink. Overthinking leads to loss of confidence and, with it, loss of your fundamentals. Over time, your best QBs do learn it, but it takes a bit, in my opinion, at the expense of the first 4-5 games. Even when they learn it, it has already taken a toll of the QBs confidence. I think that’s why your QB Thorsen has struggled in the NFL. He saw the complexity of the Eagles offense and reverted back to loss of confidence and fundamentals he had in his first year or 2 at Northwestern.
I believe your offense is at least as talented as your defense. Fundamentally sound play is easiest for young men when they are given relatively simple tasks. It builds confidence and confidence builds champions. Complexity at this level leads to overthinking, overthinking to second guessing, and second guessing to losses.
Good luck the rest of the year!
