The CDC only counts COVID-19 deaths the NCHS has verified on death certificates. Some states will post a COVID19 death on their website, but it takes time for death certificates to be submitted & vetted which delay them being added to the CDC numbers. Some deaths are not counted in the CDC numbers because they are removed through vetting process.

That’s why the official CDC numbers will be lower than a count from state/territory websites.
