I never felt a lot of animosity as a Cyclone living in Omaha when we were in the same conference. Admittedly, we didn’t win often in football, so we weren’t considered a rival. I had OU friends at the Western Electric plant that would wear their regalia on the Friday before a game. I always thought any jousting they took was in good fun, and they welcomed the attention.

My Omaha Hawkeye friends feel like they get taunted and abused which surprises me. Is there something different about Hawkeyes that would make them a target? Is it a mutual lack of respect? I know I got a lot of birds flashed at me when I drove into Iowa City w a red Camaro with Nebraska plates in the early 1980s during the 4 game NU- U of I series.

I graduated from ISU even though I've been a life long Husker fan as a native Nebraskan. ISU is an afterthought pretty much everywhere except within the ISU and Iowa fanbases.

At least when NU use to be good it was easy enough to be a dick to the Iowa fanbase in Omaha because they always thought they were something and they never were.

Its harder now but a good many of them still deserve the ribbing.

Iowa has had the upper hand the past few years. It's undeniable. They want a measure of respect we are unwilling to give them. We see them as a perennial 8 and 9 win program, and never a threat to be in the top 10 nationally. Delusional or not, we believe within a matter of time, that we will eclipse them again and that overall, top to bottom, we have the better history and a better program with bigger reach across the country.

We love to poke at them because it brings out their little man syndrome.

At least according to that wins chart someone posted in another thread they were only like five or so wins ahead of us the last ten years. So basically the head to head matchup. This has been one of the best runs of Iowa football and certainly one of the worst for NU.

I can live with that for now.

As a lifelong Husker fan, I will admit to being a closet Cyclone rooter other than when they played NU. My experience at ISU games is that the people were very similar to our small town Husker fans even when they beat Callahan's team in Ames. Good people. Iowa's fans largely not so much.

Yah when I showed up at ISU Sage Rosenfels was the dude, along with JJ Moses and they had their first 9 win season and bowl game in like 30 years. Completely different environment coming from rooting NU in the 90s.

The ISU gameday experience is NOT Lincoln, but its such a down homey Mayberry type of atmosphere that lots of young families enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, every fan base has its share of overly drunk frat boys and what not, but Ames is generally good clean fun on gameday.

Definitely more of a b-ball school, and as an alum I certainly follow b-ball more than the football program because Husker b-ball has been crap for basically ever outside of some high points. I am enjoying Matt Campbell though.

In general I think Iowa is one of the worst fan bases at least in the Midwest. Which is something of a crazy statement because my wife's family is all in on the Hawkeyes and a good many fans are super great people. Their jerks are absolute jerks though.

I was in the the Cyclone drumline so I've been there as an "official Cyclone" on a couple of occasions. During the 2002 where ISU came back like 20 some points to spoil Iowa's otherwise undefeated year I sat next to the absolute worst 8 year old in the front row. He was shouting all kinds of obscenities at me and my friends the whole game, and his dad was just egging him on and throwing in a few choice words himself.

I have a nearly 9 year old son now, and I wouldn't let him say that stuff to Antifa, let alone a rival football fan. And I personally wouldn't be cursing a band kid if I were at a game today.

The other year I went, we were playing/marching from the stadium back to the bus or something, and a drunk Iowa fan literally tackled me as the band marched by. I only sprained my ankle but he got a good beating from folks around me before the cops hauled him off.

I've been there as a "civilian" a few times with my Hawk friends just to enjoy CFB and its ok. When you are on the field that first row isn't very far so its like playing in a cage, the whole place feels smaller than it is. I much prefer Memorial honestly, with a grander feeling.

Edit: Strangely enough its one of the away games I'm attending (NU at UI if possible) this year.

Never argue with an Iowa fan. They are idiots, and will bring you down to their level, then beat you with their vast experience.
