He literally hates white people.
That guy loved my grandafther and my family. He treats me great every time I see him. He's just a straight foward guy, no bs. He doesnt do the whole deep south fake "How Yaall lemme kiss your ***" routine. I actually preferred being treated in a real matter. If you think he is racist, I gotta few guesses. 1.You went to private school, lived around no black people, and they make you uncomfortable OR 2. You not a very good ordering person. He's not the soup nazi but know what the hell you want, especially if there is a line. The whole menu is directly in front of you

On Hwy. 82 between Starkville and Columbus, take the GTR airport exit, go to the north side frontage road and head east (towards Columbus) Great steaks and not as pricey as some of the others. Petty's also gets my nod. Try the bacon BBQ sandwich. Bacon, pulled pork BBQ on a bun. About 2000 artery and colon clogging calories of pure heaven.

I am a very good ordering person, and I always know what I want when I occasionally go. Every time I have gone with my friends he is completely mute, and seemsextremelyfrustrated and pissed off. He looks completely disinterested all the time. Look.. maybe the guys old and wants to hang it up or maybe every time I've gone he has had a really bad day, but I'm just sayin.. If an old white guy was acting like that to a black person, then they damn well would be calling him a racist.<div>
</div><div>I'm soooo happy he is besties with your grandpa and your family. I'm just telling you like it is from what the majority of people I know that go there say.. but who cares I guess. You go for the bbq anyway.</div>

Having worked at Cappe's and Cappe being a good friend of mine I can assure you that they do not use Dale's. They don't put anything on the meat until it hits the grill. BEST steak in town, hands down.

Every time I've had the filet all I could taste was salt. Everyone likes it different. I just do not like their steak at all.

You know what a sheltered life they lead up in OxTown

Back in my time there was a greasy spoon out there (Sarge's?) that had just about the best sliced roast beef on toast with gravy and fries a guy would want to eat. Clayton Village isn't the same anymore (sigh).

The Waffle house that I thought about is out by the WallMArtz store on H25.

Its the bear's favorite place to eat.

I used to eat at Little Dooey until I went in Grumpy's. Now Little Dooey is a plan H emergency backup only. Never tried Petty's but plan to someday. I love Old Venice and those that mentioned Mug Shots are spot on for your more non-traditional burgers (try the Mcdonalds). However, for your more homestyle greasy hamburger I have got to mention Christy's. You can literally hear your arteries clog every 3rd bite but man is it a good burger. To me, I have never been a big fan of the Veranda or Tyler. Both seem expensive and the food, while good, not worth the price. My last steak at Cappe's was very good and Harvey's is good.

I can think of 20 places I would rather have a burger from. I've never foundit all that greasy. I didn't find it all that anything. It's just a simple burger that's nothing special.

I still don't get the fascination over a pre-cooked, well-done Sysco patty with a bunch ranch and BBQ sauce dumped all over it. They make nothing from scratch there and it shows.

Cheap but mediocre! Algoods is great late night and Danvers is good if you want to eat a nice salad for free.

Make sure you have plenty of money on her moneymate card. Mazzio's in the Cafeteria will drain you dry!

Only one mention of Lil' Dooey and its negative? I know its "uncool" to like Dooeys on this board, but I've always thought that was lame. I've been going to Starkville my whole life, and nothing in that town BBQ wise comes close to Dooeys. The best sauce I've ever had. Great waflle fries. Best BBQ Beans, garlic bread, and the actual meat is good too. I know people like to be cool and down what probably is our most known restaurant, but the ****'s good. I tried Petty's bc of this board, and I thought it sucked ***. Too much fat in the meat, sauce was too runny, and the service was ****. I bet some of y'all are like one of my old roommates-"just give me a 17load of food in a styrofoam box and I'll keep coming back."

Their pork is fantastic. Their hot BBQ sauce isexcellent. As mentioned, their waffle fries are awesome. In my book, what makes them better than Petty's is their fried greentomatoes. I've never understood their garlic bread. It smells funny and tastes even worse.

You definitely don't go to Petty's for the service. I figured that would be implied for most since it's a storage shed and a deck...

There always telling me to sit down and **** when I want to stand-up and cheer......17in ignorant crackers holdin me down!!!

JC,

I used to agree with you 100% on Dooey...until I went to Grumpy's. I like Grumpy's 10 times better than Dooey. I also don't like the fact that Dooey took down all the colored placemats they had up on the wall. To me that gave them their unique atmosphere. Now they are just another restaurant in an old house with lousy parking. I have never been to Petty's even though I went to school at MSU and live in Starkville now so I can't comment one way or the other. It smells good driving down 12 when the wind is right but that is all I can say one way or the other. But now, when I want barbeque I make my way down old 82 to Grumpy's.

If Barry Wood wasn't such good friends with Kirk Herbstreit the place would have been closed by now. Their sauce is good. The sides are pretty good, but the meat is bland. They don't rub anything but the ribs, and it shows.

Best barbecue place in Starkville was Sonny's. Not sure how it is since the original owner passed away though.

I'd say the best barbecue is Starkville now is Petty's and Grumpy's is not far behind. The Atmosphere is better at Grumpy's.

When my wife and I go to Starkville we always eat at Stromboli's and Harvey's. The Veranda is nice too. I would compare it to Boure' in Oxford, and I consider that a huge compliment.

I can get down with Grumpy's. I used to go there all the time when it first opened up. They have some cool stuff on the menu, but I had a few repeated incidents where the service sucked as was really slow-lost orders, etc. and quit going there. The Alamo at Grumpys is the best thing there and one of the best dishes in Starkville. Very underrated. Rotel w/ pulled pork and bbq sauce on those big *** fried chips. Awesome.

So, they've been doing pretty well in Starkville for what? 20 years. The line is always out the door on game days and big Saturdays in Starkville, and they've been doing that well for that long all on the backs of having Herbstreit and the Gangs pictures on the wall? Well, hell, I'm starting a business tomorrow with that exact same premise. I guess the entire public is just that stupid to keep coming back for Herbie's beautiful mug. Nothing to do w/ the food. I'm sure. It's almost as if the same perpetuation that "Dooeys is awesome" that people complained about has turned around into "Dooey's sucks" idea around here. It's probably somewhere in the middle.

I agree with Lil Dooeys being good BBQ, whoever said their garlic bread smells funny must have AIDS.<div>

so all I have to do is say, "Would you like for me to take you to MugShots?" and I am a hero.

It is a no lose opportunity for me. Those don't come often but the new MugShots in Meridian is a definite winner for me.

I just said that they are over-rated. The sides are better than the barbecue.

Any restaurant in Starkville would be successfulif they had free advertising with ESPN every time there was a game in town. Little Dooey did okay until the ESPN plugs started. Then they exploded. It's a fact. Ask the owners and they will tell you that Herbstreit and ESPN took them to level they never expected. There is a reason that their restaurants in Columbus, West Point, Perdido Bay, FL, and the franchise in Charlotte, NC failed. Actually, I guess Columbus hasn't failed because they are still open, but they aren't doing so hot.
