An article from Blue Ridge Now says that Colton Brackett, the coach for East Henderson has stepped down. He doesn’t say if he’ll do anything immediately but man East Henderson football is just in a very tough place right now.

WOW! Is that just one big coincidence or is Henderson County not a good county to coach in? I know the coach at West retired and it has been open for a while even though they have had some success recently. The coach at North took the job at Enka which seemed like a demotion to me. I think it is a little bit of both a coincidence and product of their making. West’s coach, it was just time to retire and he was coming off a few years of a generational run of talent. They’ll still be good but that group of athletes were special and not just in football. West Henderson, has always had a great athletics program overall just not the greatest in football and the Mills River area is really growing. Great opportunity for a coach.

The North to Enka decision shocked me with what North has coming back in two brothers unless they don’t wind up at North. Henderson County has sort of an unspoken open enrollment policy. If it is an in county transfer it seems pretty easy but if you cross county lines in the wrong way, all Hell breaks loose. I think this could have played into the decision.

As for East, their athletes are either walking the halls or going elsewhere when it comes to football because that program is pitiful right now. I don’t mean that negative but more in a “it stinks to see how bad they’ve become.” I say this with zero hesitation, our JV team (Pisgah) could have beat their varsity by 20+ 10 of 10 guaranteed. IMO, East is currently the hardest job in WNC. Something needs fixed that seems bigger than just the school and it is going to require a coach with lots of patience, work ethic, and recruiting the school and community regularly. AND it needs a school board and community to support him. I will say I think this coach had those qualities, it is just a lot to ask of a coach on NC pay without burnout catching up with you.

It is hard to believe how bad East Henderson has become. They were legit when Coach Chappell was there. East won 11 games his last year there and has only won 20 in the 13 years since he left.

This year was one of the most outmanned units I’ve ever watched. I greatly respect the kids that ARE playing there because those are not fun scenarios.
