Hes a true freshman. Rutgers doesn't recruit finished products - yet (oh ya it may take years but I still believe).

True Freshman should be redshirted unless they are exceptional. Unfortunately RU can’t red shirt the freshman that should be redshirted
I still think he can be a decent player but not sure how much player development it takes to catch a punt.
It's kind of scary that out of the WR recruits, he's the one getting the most playing time, over Bo Melton who had all the press of being a great WR recruit and could be a difference maker.
High school kids can catch punts. He's muffed 2. He also dropped a pass last game that hit him in the hands. Any P5 receiver would've caught the pass he dropped against Penn State.
Coaching so poor. Should have never attempted to field. Think Hayek will be fine. Don’t blame him.
But he's has the MOST opportunities out of the FRESHMAN.
SO THAT'S WHAT IS TRULY SCARY
Melton is playing. He just needs to get open more often and a QB who can throw it to him.
He blocked better than Hayek today.
I think he'll be fine too, but there is no reason Hayek should be there replacing Grant on punts.
Put a receiver with more experience playing D1 ball then a kid who was on a high school field this time last year and has 10 games experience in college.
If you're going to take a chance with a freshman back there, then put in Blacksheer or Belton, who have the speed to take it yard if they break it.
But I woulnd't even put them back there, not as true freshman.

So no NFL rookie ever makes a drop or muffs a punt?
He has 8 catches. Probably 15 targets all year (I don't know for certain).
But he dropped 1 of maybe 2 passes he gets all game. Tough to develop with so few reps or opportunities as a true freshman.
So Rutgers is recruiting at the level that no coachiing or player development is needed?
Why is everyone complaining about Ash then?
IMO it’s short sighted to complain about the performance of true freshman players.
They shouldn’t be out there, if we have upperclassmen who can play at that position.

He misjudged the wind, which carried the ball further than he expected. Not the worst mistake anyone has ever made. And yes, he's playing because we don't have anybody more experienced who is better. That's not his fault.
I think you should try to be a bigger ******* for your next post.
Honestly, if you are going to fair catch the ball every time, just put Harris out there. HE ALREADY PLAYS CENTERFIELD IN BASEBALL. He should be pretty good at judging a ball falling out of the sky.

It was a little windy out there as well today so the kids get somewhat of a benefit of the doubt. That wind was swirling in the stadium not unlike what we see a Giants stadium bad effects the quarterbacks and the receivers
Maybe the OP could have caught the punts kicked to Hayek ?
Of course, he should have been, but, thanks to the flood, the cupboard of upper classmen seems bare.
Actually, when you dole out appreciation, you need to include Drew Mehringer and Chris Ash in that.
Spanky, I've been trying to keep having faith in Ash (and Kill), but today surely tested me. The only thing our team seems good at is punting. I know the players are trying -- I don't think you can play football any other way --but the results are not happening. I was in particular extremely distressed that we could not control the line of scrimmage.
The coaches should have been in his ear, telling him it is windy and if there is any uncertainty or it goes over your head to let it go and get away from it. He is a true freshman and I think will offer production here before he is done.
Did Tsimis field punts, he was very sure handed and could have helped if he was still here.

There was a time when you were NOT supposed to attempt to catch punt inside your 10 yd line Guess those days are gone.
What bothers me is the change in offensive philosophy last year did run off some upperclassmen for whatever reason. And this year we switched back to one which had more in common with Schiano's and Flood's offense. As much as Chris Laviano had his flaws, and liked to party, I think he would have been more serviceable this year than Bolin.
There are true Freshman playing all over the country !! Stop already. Including our own RB who no doubt has "it". Not calling out anyone, I'm saying he's not showing he can cut it with all the drops and muffs. Why not see what Jabbie had back there? So, Put your big boy panties on if you don't like it.
I guess you and I didn't see the same thing. The ball was in the air so long that Hayek had a greeting committee from IU where he was trying to catch the ball.. And the ball seemed clearly caught by the wind, which seems inconsistent with a low trajectory punt. And IU had the wind with it on the punt, so only a poor punt would have been low-trajectory. My recollection is that we didn't get to see much of the punt's path through the air.
I did wonder if, under these conditions.. if a coach read hm the Riot Act on what he should and should not do with wind-blown punts.
Fair Catch at the 10. eh.. okay.. but windy day and moving backwards to attempt it? NO WAY. And the announcers said they saw him dropping them in pre-game.
So.. did the coach do his coaching AFTER the mistake.. or before? or both?
And I think that's the second one he dropped in the last two weeks, but in his defense, it was really windy.
Could be wrong but I think he dropped one against Maryland too but covered it up.
