Correct. It is a rust belt conference, we were invited for the $s, plain and simple. If we win it is a nice bonus, but they don't need us to win, we serve a purpose by just existing in the NY market. Let's be honest, we didn't play our way into the conference in football or basketball, simply location, location, location. That said, there is no reason why we can't be competitive in both sports.

Context is important.

Our first two seasons in this conference have pretty much been a flustercluck.

Hard to tell a kid to sign on for 3-4 years of curb stompings and beat downs, Jersey Pride or not.

We don't need a 2006 season to get back on track, but the 40 and 50 burgers need to stop if we want the local blue chips to give us serious consideration.

and yet, if RU would have gotten off to a tremendous start in the big 10, like going undefeated into the 8th or 9th game, playing Ohio state at home, for example.... I would bet Delaney would be doing cartwheels over the northeast tv ratings, possibly national ratings also.....

I also think he would not want us to be permanent doormats, the benefit of RU in league would fade.

40 million bucks. That is the money we will be printing every year in a few years. Lets face it its a two way street. We didn't join the league so we can play in the Horseshoe and Happy Valley.

Win and more stay home. Eliminate the blow out losses and more stay home. In fact, I think the huge beat downs on national tv did more to hurt recruiting than the overall record.

Correction, it was essential the B1G kept up with the SEC. It didn't have to be OSU and MU. It could have been Wisconsin and Northwestern. Hell, as far as Delaney is concerned it could have been Rutgers and Maryland. That's up to the schools. That's up to Rutgers.

Plus it allows the "prestigious" schools (Michigan, Ohio State, etc.) the chance to get even better because they can now include playing in front of family and friends a couple times in your career as a recruiting selling point to the high-end recruits that come out of NJ every year. Only good thing is Penn State looks like a sinking ship so that's one less school that has an easy way to poach Rutgers targets

It works both ways as well. Rutgers is taking advance of this with wrestling and hopefully soon start doing it as well with Football.
