Under Kirk have we ever entered the season without a sure fire named starter? Maybe I’m missing something obvious but the only year I can think of is 2008 between Jake the Snake and Stanzi or 2014 between Beat-hard and Rudock.

His very first game in 1999 might've been up in the air had Reiners not been suspended for the opener, although I think McCann would've started against Nebraska anyway. But Reiners did eventually start game 3 for the first win against appropriately enough, Northern Illinois.

Even in those two seasons you mentioned, the opening day starter was clear for quite some time leading up to the game.

I don’t really remember the QB situations in ‘99 and ‘00.

At least back then it was common to have the occasional season in which you didn’t have an experienced QB. Iowa is a rarity in that department now…

Hartlieb began the 1987 season as Iowa's third-string quarterback before rising to the starting role and leading the team.
Entering the 1987 season under head coach Hayden Fry, Hartlieb was behind Dan McGwire and Tom Poholsky in a three-way quarterback competition. After starting the season on the bench and seeing limited early action—including a costly miscue in the Kickoff Classic against Tennessee—he fought his way up the depth chart.
Hartlieb eventually seized the starting job, throwing for 3,092 yards and 19 touchdowns that year. His breakout season featured a historic 471-yard, seven-touchdown performance against Northwestern and a iconic last-minute, fourth-and-23 game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Marv Cook to defeat Ohio State in Columbus

IIRC, after seeing all three guys in the non-conference games, McGwire started and played the entire B1G opener against MSU. It was Hartlieb the rest of the way.

McGuire started the opener but poholsky and hartlieb rotated in taking different series , Hartlieb wasn’t the starter until the third game.

Thanks. I don't think anyone has brought this situation up the past few weeks.

I believe “uncertainty” at the QB is rather common with Kirk. I believe it’s fair to say That Kirk’s Achilles heel has been assessing QB talent in his recruiting process. And really, as long as he eventually gets it right, does it make any real difference?
