I love this "holiday". It's the perfect eff-u from the students to our brilliant administration. For those that have forgotten, St. Patrick's Day was always a huge party day at Penn State. Lines at the Phyrst would start at 6:00 AM and reach for blocks. Good times. Then, the administration thought they could control the students by moving Spring break to be over St. Patrick's Day so of course the big party would stop. HaHaHA!

Sort of the same logic they used to control beer drinking by making barrels basically illegal. They somehow thought that the students wouldn't drink as much if they could only get cases which were much more expensive. The dopes never considered that the students would just move over to spirits, mostly cheap vodka and this continues to this day. They still haven't figured out that students drinking beer is much better than students drinking spirits.

Want to help curb the drinking? Bring back barrels. It wouldn't be overnight but beer would slowly begin to replace spirits.

I drank Old Milwaukee back in the day....money was never an issue when a case was $6!

I did to, but instead of paying $45 for 7.5 cases (the amount of beer in a half barrel) you could get a half barrel for about $30. So, when having a big party going with barrels is/was a big savings.

I can't agree more about kegs. It is so incredibly difficulty to get alcohol poisoning from keg beer

Rental of a keg with a tap and less the deposit comes to $209. Divide that by 1984 oz (15.5 gals) and you get 10 cents per oz, which is a lot more expensive than canned beer unless I’ve made a mistake

Your prices per case are for 30 packs not 24 packs so you'd only need 6 cases to fill a half keg. So $18.99 x 6 = $120.77. Prices in NEPA are more expensive per keg but you're not wrong. Back in the day the discrepancy was much wider.

Don't forget to factor in the spills of keg beer in red solo cups.

Kegs and taps are a deposit. Not sure what they are today but used to be $10/keg and $30/tap. Both of which were refunded when you returned the items. However, many of us owned taps and therefore didn't have to provide a deposit. I have a two prong type somewhere in the house, but I believe most of the barrels today are the ball type system. Most of us had the two prong style but a thankfully a few had the ball type so we could loan each other taps depending on the need.

Side note. I was in an engineering class that required us to design a product and put a full manufacturing plan/business plan together. One of teams designed an interface to convert a two prong system into a ball type system. They went this direction since there were many more two prong taps and barrels being used than the ball type system.

It's weird that some students still do it today as a way of say eff-u to the admin, as the OP wrote. It's a different administration which likely doesn't care so I'm not sure what the real objective is. You can dress up in green and get drunk anytime so why do it in late February and freeze your azz off? Do it in late April. It would make as much sense.
