Hamilton baseball coach Lewis Earnest wanted nothing to do with the Hamilton – Bruce controversy.

I spoke with Earnest this afternoon. The longtime Hamilton skipper refused on more than one occasion to report the violation.

“I hate it,” he said. “Once it got in the papers and the public and my kids and parents and this community found out, I have an obligation to stand up for my kids. If I don’t stand up for my kids, what am I telling them?”

Earnest, who said he and Bruce coach Sid Burt are friends, said the situation is unlike any other he’s ever been a part of.

“I haven’t (seen anything like this),” Earnest said. “Nope and I hope I don’t ever again I’m in a lose, lose situation. Sid is a good guy and a good coach. I know he didn’t intentioanlly break any rules.”

Earnest is concerned that he will look like the bad guy in the case, a case that has gone beyond anywhere he ever wanted it to go.

“You work to get a good reputation and now people are looking down on you,” he said. “That’s not something I want.”
