I know this is a family board... so I can’t quite say what I’m really thinking about Gragg and the administration besides heads need to roll for this.

He has been at more of a disadvantage from the school behind the scenes as you think. Plus, a significant staff shakeup will likely be occurring.

Heard this was likely to happen a month ago. Bascially...Haith gets a short extension. Haith agrees to take less money so that money can be used to hire Rod. The extension was done to pave the way for Rod to join the staff.

That’s bull. Even if It wasn’t bull, he still had one year to show he could improve the program. No need to give him 2 years on top of that just so he can sink the program further.

There better be some significant performance requirements in this, as in : His buyout better go to $0 if he doesn’t make the NCAA next season. Can you imagine what attendance would be like if he had 3 more seasons like the ones he just had?

I was not opposed to giving him his last contract year as a final chance. But I still think he should only get one more year to show some significant improvement. But I recognize that it also makes recruiting hard if you only have 6 months left on your contract and other coaches are telling a recruit, "Don't commit to Tulsa, that coach won't be there when you arrive".

An extension for a lower salary and a smaller buyout could make sense to give him a fair shot in that last year. I don't know what the buyout clause says, but they are reporting that his salary is going down.

Here's hoping. I really like Haith and hope he is successful.

Rod wasn't coming with Haith on the last year of his contract. Not to mention his contract had to be re-worked to free up money for Rod.

It is bull. We're 5 years in. He's had his choice of assistants several times (He started his tenure with 3 guys who had decades of head coaching experience, along with a former NBA player, and a Tulsa basketball legend). He been allowed to take JUCO after JUCO recruit. He has turned away his own recruits year after year, or had guys leave because they'd rather be elsewhere.

The excuses for him need to stop. He was handed a nice car which he then decided not to change the oil in and now he's complaining that it won't run right. So what does Gragg do? He gives him another car.

Nope. Like I said, you can think what you want. But it’s not bull.

Aston, stop. You don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ll leave it at that without digging deeper.
I do in fact. There's no excuse so great that it explains away the mistakes Haith made. He wasn't allowed to hire the specific assistant he wanted initially? So what there are plenty of good assistants out there. He wasn't allowed the recruiting budget he needed to recruit the coasts like he wanted? Too bad. There's some good kids that have come through Tulsa that he could have done a better job with.

Maybe it's that we didn't give him a big enough slush fund like they did at Miami.

I appreciate the Rod element in all of this.... but that's a big gamble to take with your program for one 4 star kid and possibly a few more in the couple years down the pike. I'd be very happy to get Bryce to TU, but I don't know if I approve of pulling a Memphis a-la Pastner and Lawson to do it. Look how it worked for them.

The Lawson family comes to Memphis... Lawson puts up big numbers but the team fails because Pastner can't coach. Pastner is effectively given the boot and Lawson transfers.

Also if he works out we may be hiring our next Head Coach as an assistant. You don't think the athletic program has been around Rod enough to know he might be HC material in a couple of years. And if he's not there yet in a couple of years, then we have a pipline of players, and tv contract money to can Haith and get somebody else. I am fine with this.

Rod and the Lawson dad are nothing alike. Lawson dad is more like Lavar Ball trying to leverage his kids to gain his own personal power. No one on here thinks Rod is anywhere near the same type of a$$-clown those two guys are.

Hines said she has sources on working to get Rod on staff at TU and it's not just mere speculation. That's hopeful. Some of you on here have more and better sources in the know. Can you share in the alley?

Please forget about Bryce as the reason for bringing Rod on board. Rod should be a great coach recruiter in his own right even if Bryce was not part of the deal!

In a day and age of shady figure in college basketball, Haith doesn't seems to be one of them. I was thinking his name would come out at some point, but doesn't seem to be- even though he is an adias man. Haith seems to be a good man (albeit a .600 level coach), but that's more than we could say with Woj. I'm willing to give him more years with hiring someone that can recruit and I think Rod could do that- I just with we could get K. English back too somehow (a dream and a prayer- maybe someday). I don't mind the JUCO/Transfer route in these times when there is no commitment to a program. It seems (more times than not) that transfers stick better and JUCO's graduate...and that is the point the NCAA tries to sell.

I don't like the pay cut being mentioned in the TW, but it wouldn't take rocket science to figure out what's happening.

I am actually more hopeful for the TU basketball future now than yesterday.

I'm not saying he would be... but if his son were to come in and perform really well while the team still struggled, resulting in Haith being let go, I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to get Bryce to a bigger name school later, with Haith gone.

He'd be good, but I'm not sure he'd be good enough to offset how poor I think Haith has been. Recruits or no recruits. I'd rather us have gotten a new coach who then immediately brought Rod on board.

Remember, Haith has had talented kids in the past couple years (Etou, Shaq + Juice, and Jeffries) and he hasn't done much with them.

Per the Tulsa World: "In each year under Haith, TU has finished better than its preseason prediction in the American Athletic Conference."

Have we really exceeded expectations the past few years?

Pastner beats our ***. Aston.....give this situation a few weeks to settle out and see where we are. A legitimate chance at the top players in Oklahoma is nothing to complain about.

Miami's entire athletic program was subject to Shapiro and his shady *** crap.

Mizzou was a rogue booster working through an assistant. Prob shouldn't happen but Haith's name was not part of the findings there.

If you pony up 2M they might consider a new coach.

Maybe you could sell 2 or 3 of your Healey's to get a start on it.

No but having a coach who can’t do anything with them is. There is no guarantee that players are going to overlook the poor quality of Haith’s recent coaching results and how he has run the program just to come play for Rod. They want to be where they can win.

Hath’s biggest problem is recruiting. I honestly don’t think his coaching is the problem. He seems like a solid coach. Rod thompson should fix Haith’s Recruiting deficiencies and lead us to success. I think this is the right call by the athletic department.

I don't think Haith is a bad coach, but there are things our players do that fundamentally come down to shortcomings in coaching. I don't see Greg Marshall's players flying into the stands when they close out on the three pointer, among other things. Our players have been doing that for 5 years.

Not a surprise, it's been rumored for a couple weeks, and we've been discussing the Rod Thompson possibility for about a month in Hurricane Alley. News came out at a good time with talented visitors hitting campus this weekend.

This is putting a **** ton of pressure on Rod. He’s basically expected to single handedly turn our recruiting around with.a head coach on a (hopefully) very short situation. It’s not really fair to him. We should have brought him in on a new staff to give him the greatest chance to succeed. Now he has 1 or 2 years with a staff that other than him can’t recruit and he’s got to turn it around pronto. I’m surprised he’d take it. I wouldn’t. Unless he has a longer term guaranteed contract to at least get paid out if Haith goes.
