Can he hit between 33-35% on 2-3 attempts a game?

I’d about given up on this but I feel like it’s possible and could make a HUGE difference.

They currently have vid of him on the UK MBB IG draining corner 3’s (no defense) and I’ve gotta hope.

He’s def gonna get open looks...

Hope he can.

But it also depends on what others do. If we have two good shooters shooting three on the court then he doesn't need too.

I think it’s very possible. I want to say the last half of last season he hit pretty close to 33 percent. They say his biggest issue last season was conditioning he hit a wall. That alone can drastically effect a shot. So if he comes in in shape with the exact same shooting ability as last season he should be able to do that. I’m going to be optimistic and say he shoots 35 percent. This season and if he does omg we will be scary

We can argue about semantics and throw in qualifiers if you want I guess. I just don’t think “great” is how I’d describe it. We can agree on pretty good.

If the line didn't move back I would be pretty confident that he would shoot above 33%.

Now, not so sure. Good thing is , he does have some touch and most of his misses last year where not bad.

But for efficiency sake and spacing.. hoping he shoots 35+%.

Not sure the line moving back will affect him anyway. 90% of his jumpers he had one foot on the 3 point line. Seriously not sure I’ve seen one guy shoot so many balls with one foot on the line as Hagans last year. Now he’ll just be a foot inside the line :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hamidou Diallo had arguably the worst jump shot of any kid we’ve recruited out of high school and he improved enough in a year and a half to finish at 34% during his career here.

If he can do it I’m confident Hagans can.

If we are relying on hagans for points...it's gonna be a long season.
Hagans needs to protect the ball, hit ft, and cause chaos.
We don't need him to score at all

I don't think we need to RELY on him as a first (or second) option, but I see no reason he can't get 8-10 ppg just being assertive driving, free throws, transition layups, and 1 or 2 3's a game.

He needs to be a threat to score, it would help everyone immensely. .

Maybe it is important he bumps his FT% up to solidly in the 80's.

Good news: He shot 40% over his last 12 games (regular and postseason combined).

Bad news: He shot 28% in the SEC and NCAA Tournaments. He was really finding his groove those final 6 regular-season games, but hit just 3/11 in the 6 postseason games.

There were rumors of him having an injury in the postseason, like an ankle or knee sprain, but nothing was ever confirmed, so who knows if it was real and if it affected him.

I think 33-35% should be the expectation. He works his tail off in the gym so he should eventually get it going. I could see him getting to around 37% when the postseason begins.

Sure, I can see that reasoning. We probably shouldn't expect to depend on him... but some timely 3s and better finishing at the rim will go a long way.

Perfect world, he is 35+% so teams can't sag off of him. This will help guys like Whitney and Brooks who have potential to be excellent straight line drivers (who are also working on tightening their handle).

Big question mark for me is who can we play with Hagans if he is still a liability from 3?

Playing Montgomery and Richards with Hagans could be dangerous. Teams will pack it in. So only one of those two at a time with Hagans. I suspect Montgomery starts inside.

Whitney probably starts at the 3, so Cal will need shooters at the 2 and 4.

Maxey or Quickley at the 2 will be fine. Both are capable shooters. Maxey is a potential superstar. He gets the nod.

I think Sestina is the likely candidate at the 4. He is our most proven 3 point shooter. Also gives us size, experience, and is a good rebounder.

G Hagans- poor shooter
G Maxey- good shooter
F Whitney- hopefully a decent shooter
F Sestina- consistent shooter
F Montgomery- poor shooter

I might consider replacing Whitney with Juzang or Brooks (or even Quickley in some situations) to give us another shooter, if both Hagans and Whitney struggle from 3.

Good news is we have lots of options on the wings.

The fact that we continue to recruit guards who can’t shoot frustrates. We went 10 years in a row with Turner, Hawkins and Rondo. It’s absolutely insane to bring them in and think it’s going to change drastically.

I think we’re taking what we can get. Shooters don’t want to come here because we don’t take a lot of jumpers.

Though herro proved last season if you’re good enough Cal will play you, give you a green light and do what he can to make you look good.

Big thing with him right now is playing full tilt every second of every game, even when he is off shooting the ball. Herro type effort we can count on every game and he will give us a lot outside of scoring. That effort thing can't be off and on if he wants to move up a level.

All this talk about 3 point shooting has got me thinking about, dare I say it...the P word!

I know Cal will not bring it back, but man this team looks good on paper for platoons.

Some guys deserve to play that we just might not need on the floor together. We need three shooters on the floor at all times for spacing or teams will just pack it in. Run two different squads that play together to keep from having three weak shooters on the floor together.

Group 1

G Hagans- poor shooter
G Quickley- good shooter
F Juzang- good shooter
F Sestina- good shooter
F Montgomery- poor shooter

Group 2

G Maxey- good shooter
G Allen- good shooter
F Brooks- good shooter
F Whitney- poor shooter
F Richards- non-shooter(from 3 at least)

Like I said, I don't think Cal will do it, so no need to berate me, just food for thought.

The only problem with your selection is that you are labeling some guys without having seen them play a game in college. Hopefully they turn out just as you said, but Johnson wasnt supposed to be that good from 3, yet he was. Baker was supposed to be lights out, yet he was far from that. The best 3pt shooter in our history wasnt supposed to be very good from 3, yet posted back to back seasons way north of 40%.

As for shooters in general, we dont have to have a Lamb on our team, we just cant have a couple of Briscoes. I'm not sure when a player had to make 40% from 3 to be good, but it simply isnt the case. It is much more important to just be steady, and shoot above 30%.

Don't worry guys all we need is duct tape. The staff put it on PJ last year and look what happened. Duct tape really does fix everything.

Gotta remember,a big part of Cal's offense in the past is the ball handler beating his defender to the rim and either making the basket off the dribble drive or getting it high off the back board and rim for a rebound and put back.

So I gotta assume when Coach is recruiting a pg he is looking at the players speed and power off the dribble as much as (if not more than) shooting ability.

Hagans slowed the game down to much last year with the ball in his hands.

I'm hoping he is comfortable to speed up his game alot this year.

I think the faster we play the better Richards and Montgomery will be.
