Just because one number (8) is bigger than another number (7) does not indicate improvement or decline. The quality of the opponent must be taken into play. Nuance. Nuance. Nuance. It's not as simple as pulling out a numbers chart and pointing to the bigger one.

They beat two 10-win teams last year. This year, they lost to 4 or 5 such teams and beat zero. One of them crushed them by 40+. Their peak performance is worse in 2019 than 2018, their overall performance is worse, their analytical / metric performance is worse. Yet you still see upward trend? Quite the mental gymnastics you’ve got going on right now.

2018 - 17th
2019 - 24th

Or FPI's Efficiency Rating:

2018 - 25th
2019 - 26th

They may improve next year, but they did not improve this year.

Maybe, just maybe, this has to do with their schedule? Maybe? Maybe this is my point all along? Their schedule wasn't set up for a year 2 massive jump and that it made 7-5 palatable and understandable.

Is this really hard to understand? What am I missing?

What you're missing is that those metrics take the strength of your schedule into account.
