I DGAF about the arbitrary Top 5 ********. That doesn’t mean much to me- Bledsoe, Booker, Murray, Towns (by some), Fox, Bam, Monk, etc. weren’t “Top 5” recruits, but they were elite turnkey talents. We need elite talent- and we didn’t add any this year, or last year (arguably).

If Cal isn’t going to add 3-4 elites every year, then he needs to talk some of these dudes into coming back another year AND/OR actually develop the dudes who stay.

It’s a crime to me that we wasted Ulis/Murray because Poythress/Lee never got any better.

And Cal also really F’d up on PG last year. He could have had a Young/SGA backcourt, or Tremont Waters. Instead he took Green- who he obviously hates and refuses to let run the point.

He also messed up on Stewart this year- got in waaaay late. That kid will be more productive than Wiseman.

He reluctantly singled out Green last night as "playing great ball" b/c it was impossible not to -- but yeah, I'm not sure I've seen a more obvious case of Cal not liking one of his own than Green. It's uncomfortable to watch.

Hopefully, he'll realize that we NEED Quade to be on the floor & playing with confidence to reach our potential...kinda like he finally caved in w/ Willis.

I know it's only 5 games in or whatever -- but it is pretty apparent this squad is absolutely atrocious at one of the most fundamental tenets of basketball; staying between your man and the basket. Kinda hard to do when you're supersized at positions 3-5, most of the time.

TBH tho, I love where basketball is right now and where it's going. To me, the game has actually devolved and has thrown out the previous qualifications required in order to be successful. There's no complex playbook needed anymore. No cumbersome offensive system with tons of conditionals (IF THIS HAPPENS etc). It's refreshing ---> Beat your man and force another guy to collapse on you. Once that happens, please find your open teammate and thus shoot an uncontested open shot. If someone closes out and there is a gap/angle, simply dribble by them and attack the basket OR repeat the process by bringing out the D's bigs and forcing them to negotiate a screen.

^ Novel concept, I know.

In this day and age if you cannot handle the high ball screen equipped with two guys capable of both 1) hedging and/or 2) switching, the opponent will expose you and just simply bring them out and ball screen your *** to death until they find a gap. The **** is checkers, not chess. Can't hide you out there, bubby.

For the love of God if we're going to have any hint of success defensively this year we must go small and put PJ at the 5, Keldon at the 4 and go from there. TMFS. Reid Travis would have been badass 10 years but the game has changed - Cal hasn't. Teams are going to attack our bigs relentlessly and force them out high to defend in space. Sucks for your recruiting narrative, I guess. But I'd rather not spend my winter dogcussing our archaic basketball philosophy and lose 12 games.

Grief.

Um, Derek Willis got drafted in the NBA draft (or FA pickup, idk). He took his talents elsewhere, but he belonged on the floor.

We don't need Quade anywhere near the bench to reach our potential. Preferably not even in Rupp. If Hagans/Quickley don't improve....well we're screwed either way, but acting like 5'8" can't-do-nothing Quade (who thought about transferring to IUPUI) is some sort of lynchpin to this team is pathetically sad. He could maybe be a VMI KEYdet, but I doubt they'd put up with his lil attitude and neon shoes. Can't wait till him and Brad are gone.

^ YES!

Travis is there off the bench to provide a steady hand & physicality when needed & Hagans/EJ hopefully in time will provide something. Richards for emergencies.

I know it's been discussed but has anyone actually tried not watching our basketball games yet? Working out for me so far tbh.

Governor's Cup week anyway.

-word. Watched the first half of the duke "game"...forgot they were playing til bout halftime the last couple games.

-glad to see folks Saturday...hadnt seen harris or huber in a minute.

-tony's is solid...on par w/Ruth's chris/ruby's/morton's etc. Nice first trip there.

-so mrs rudd is down to Subaru Outback or Toyota Highlander. To 3rd row or not 3rd row. Middle age is awesome. The good news is that these totally pedestrian vehicles are equivalent to two years of state school.

-possibly shooting clay pigeons sunday at the bourbon county farm...lemme know if you are is interested. Basic...one/two throwers but its a good time.

*My wife let me know around 10PM friday night, that in addition to the "small get together with a couple of her friends that were in town for thanksgiving" that people were also bringing their kids. 11 kids under the age of 7. I was not upset with small kids acting like small kids, I was pissed off at her and her friends that assumed that was a good situation to even bring them into. Its not like my house is equipped with any toys. I dont even have a video game console. We have netflix and a couple ipads to entertain them. The house survived, but the dog was traumatized and I havent spoken to my wife much since.

*Excited about hitting the grocery tonight to begin preparations for all of the cooking this week. Should be dope this year. Finally reached the point where my MIL doesnt question everything i cook.

*Have only watched a little bit of the Duke game- then was helping out with some election stuff so I had an excuse to turn it off. Followed a couple of other games via ESPN app- but its become really exhausting to live and die with the basketball team early on in the year. I really only begin to check the score after Booker's 2nd or 3rd "Eff You Cal, *****" texts. I'll get there, but right now the indifference feels right. Maybe its the lingering football season that still has bigger implications this season thats kept me from caring about hoops.

*ended up with a sinus infection and strep after the knoxville debacle. So not only was the roadtrip awful- its awfulness has lingered an additional 10 days.

*Logans is having a 25% off sale online today... thats a hell of a deal.

*So we miss out on Carey and Wiseman in a span of a couple days? Yeesh.

*My wifes work car is a subaru. Think we are on the 3rd model now- all have been really nice cars.

*O'Sheas on Wednesday night?

- So what Geese is saying is that it’s good that we’re missing on all our post prospects.

- We land McDaniels and that’s still an outstanding #1 class with three Top 10 studs.

- Clark, that’s why I don’t hang out with parents. You have a kid- boom, outta here. May seem dickish but at least I avoid the conversations I used to have to have with BRax.

Just the word 'post' feels antiquated.

I want my bigs facing up, spreading the floor by bringing out the other team's big guy, thus allowing easier driving lanes for airone else.

Big fan of McDaniels albeit a weird recruitment. Similar to Wiseman, maybe not as long or athletic but a much better shooter and more polished. Much more preferable in terms of college production. JMO. My perfect 5.

I think some of you are a little far on the "game is changing" approach. Sure it's changing but traditional lineups have still won several recent titles. Hell UNC had like 37 PFs 2 years ago. Several different formulas.

If you're going to be a revolving door you better get elite guys and he hasn't done that recently.

Rack em

I think you can get away in college b-ball with Reid Travis for a couple reasons. One, he will punish smaller players on the offensive end on post ups, efficiently, which is key. Two, he’s got a high b-ball IQ which makes up for some of his athletic shortcomings. But he has to play the 5...and he should want to play the 5 because any chance a team wants him as a third big to sit the bench in the league and be a good character guy, it sure as hell won’t be as a 4 or 3.

...but your overall point is valid, we are going about this all wrong. PJ is trying to be a 3 and he won’t play 3 in the league, he’s a small ball 5, occasionally a 4 in the correct matchups.

KJ might end up a 4 if he doesn’t develop a tighter handle.

EJ is a 5, period.

Richards is a dinosaur...pulling for the kid but if he wants to be paid to play ball it’s going to be overseas.

Then we have a shooting guard and three tweener point guards.

===> none of this means we can’t be good, but the struggles, in hindsight, make sense.

Rudd, go 3rd row. About 10 years ago my wife has the brilliant idea that if she got an SUV without a 3rd row, she wouldn't be the one to have to drive all our kids' friends around.

Yeah, right. Sounded good in theory (to her, I guess) but that's just not how it works. We traded that car inside of 2 years.

Why did UNC make the title two years in a row? Guys like Brice Johnson and Justin Jackson switching everything left and right, interchangeable AF. Could guard positions 1-5 and could face up and draw people out. Luke Maye? Undersized 4 who can face-up (obviously). Meeks was a space eater but he was allowed to make people pay because he had people around him that they had to keep honest.

Those Tar Heel teams only took off with the emergence Brice Johnson/Justin Jackson. Versatile wings who played up their 'traditional' position. (SEE DUKE THIS YEAR).

Tack that on with an elite PG and you're gonna do some damage. Yeah.

BTW, reading The Last Temptation of Rick Pitino. Against my better judgment but my dad cajoled me into it.

Have to say though, it is riveting. Much more about cbb in general, than just Rick. Although the U of L stuff is fascinating in itself.

Paints a pretty unflattering picture of cbb. Interesting that Bowen just filed suit against Adidas, and the book sets up exactly why he would do that.

They also killed it in the paint. They weren't jacking up 3's like crazy. That's what I'm saying. Doesn't have to the Nova way, hell he was red-shirting those guys.

Anyone who thinks the game is changing is hopelessly thinking wishfully, and/or confusing this with the NBA.

If anything, someone needs to bring Mike Fratello out of retirement. His style would fit perfectly in today’s NCAA.

Maybe Green will be Cal’s version of Epps. I don’t love the dude- but he’s gotten better on D (not any worse than our other guards), is a shotmaker, is our second best shooter and isn’t a bad playmaker.

Can we just start by playing a little f*cking defense on Wednesday/Friday? Be a hell of a start.
The game Wednesday will be mind-numbingly frustrating, as it is *every* year. Kids are checked out, ready to go home ---> 1pm tip with a less-than-energetic crowd. Decent mid-major opponent looking to spoil the day.

Happens. Every. Year.

Paschal's tackle/teammate reaction not being in the highlight vidya on sea of blue annoyed me. I get that it wasn't a massive play in the grand scheme but cmon. That was great.

Not every year- didn’t Doron go off for 31 in 2010?
