Well, Duke didn't fire Coach K when he lost the opening game twice this decade. Kansas/UNC didn't fire Roy when he was bouncing 2nd rounds. Who's left with multiple titles? Oh right, no one. If Cal is sitting at one title when he's been at a premier program as long as Roy or K have then yeah, I'll concede dude is overrated but JFC, it's not like he's Bill Self.

To hear him talk, you'd think we were Marshall football, lost our entire team in a horrible accident, and had to start from scratch (God forbid).
BY DESIGN is the operative phrase here. It's one thing to encourage kids to chase their dreams, it's another to kick them square in the ***, out the door, and tell them not to come back.
Don't know if / how he changes that philosophy, but until we start returning some experience, this season will be more the norm than the exception.
^^True but Cal expected more from himself at this point and we all know it. Promise you he thought he’d have a couple in 9 years. Hell, he’s the guy that asked himself if he was here to chase down UCLA. Better get working on that and if I’m honest I do not see it happening next year.
I don't pretend to know what it must be like to coach at an elite level, nor am I a psychologist, but I have this gut feeling that Cal's "ending generational poverty" maxim is partly a crutch to his insecurities as an in-game coach.
He knows what his criticisms are. He knows what the headlines will be if he loses to some of these jackwagons. He's a competitive sonofabitch just like anyone in his position is. He knows he has to win big and he wants to. He knows how he'll be judged and it must eat at him when he falls short. Regardless of what he says, being judged all the time, especially in this spotlight, has to affect his confidence/overall psyche. So why not build in some excuses to take a little bit of heat away? Hence the, "We're young." "It's not always about winning a championship. It's about ending generational poverty." and stuff like that. He's trying to find a silver lining, moreso for himself than the fanbase, maybe.
It is honorable that he cares about these players and their futures. And it is genuine, no doubt about it. But at the end of the day, these guys are ending generational poverty on their own merits, not Cal's. If they went to Grand Canyon and played for Majerle, they'd still wind up in the League. Let's be honest.

K has taken Cal’s model and perfected it. He’s flat out a better in-game coach. Frankly, Cal looks harried and scared in the tournament since ND in 2015.
He needs to figure **** out and build some experience with his 3-4 OADs.

No. Look, I’m not excusing last night’s **** performance or Cal’s weaknesses in general. I can tell you though that deep down he genuinely believes in the ending generational poverty deal. Like, he believes it’s his greater good. Not saying I agree nor disagree but at the end of the day he thinks he’s serving a higher purpose than the ******** facade that is the platform we know as the NCAA.
I’ll return a kid or two back in to generational poverty right now for another championship.

K is relying almost exclusively on zone this year, because it maximizes his team's chances of winning.
By contrast, earlier this season Cal said one of the reasons he doesn't play zone much is because it wouldn't "help his players get ready for the next level." Then Jones indefensibly defended that stance on KSR.
Ridiculous. How bout you just put players in the best position to succeed? Seems to me that if a kid is a terrible defender, you're just hurting his stock by making him defend. I'm fairly certain that playing zone isn't hurting Marvin Bagley's draft stock.

The in-game coach stuff is overblown, imo. Cal’s biggest coaching issue to me is his reluctance to embrace modern b-ball, floor spacing, etc. This insistence that you must have a center, basically a dying position in the NBA.
His determination to develop Richards is exhibit A. This team should have gone to small ball day one, 4 out 1 in with PJ on the block.

I certainly wish there was a magic pill for this one but in reality this can be a serious issue. When I was younger I would try to fall back on the "at least I am not out doing something worse" line (and actually believing that should work).....now looking back at that I can see that had the same chance of working as me trying to hit a Hogen Apex 1 iron. In her eyes I was gone and regardless of what I was doing gone was gone.
I was playing at least twice a week and hitting balls at least twice a week.....and for some reason my wife thought she was not important to me???? After enough fighting and resentment for some reason I tried to look at the equation from her side. I thought there is no way I would put up with her being gone 4 or 5 days of the week and then watch her catch up on chores the other two days and feel like I meant much to her.
I could not find it in myself to play and not work at it so I quit. I resented having to quit something I loved, so I had to search for an answer. Here is where the magic happened and boys if you want an answer that will work grab you a pen and pencil cause here I go.....I found a way to quit golf and not resent not being on the course. I started riding fast motorcycles for short distances and once the car did a U-turn in front of me and I flipped over it compound fracturing both arms...presto!
I eventually got out of ICU and spent the next (lots of) months rehabbing. I was no longer on the course and quit thinking about the course because I could barely wipe my own a**. I could not feed myself and my wife was there for me and I appreciated her.
After 9 years of no golf I finally started back this year. But, I have cut it back to one or two rounds a week and one or two practice sessions a week
...OK, not much of a cut back BUT this time around she thinks I am working for most practice sessions and sometime one of the weekly rounds.
So, crash a bike and then come back but don't tell her how much you are golfing.

College refs are the absolute worst. Nova player dunks on Konates face, Konate responds with a big rebound and dunk on the other end. Game is getting hype with some expected trash talk in that situation, but lets take the air out of the gym and call a double tech giving Konate his 4th foul.
