Soccer is a weird sport. If your kid wants to keep playing it as he gets older and get "good" at it, the rec leagues are worthless because the dads/coaches usually don't know what they're doing in terms of technical training.
2 years ago I coached my daughter's soccer team at our Y. I had to google a bunch of the rules...apparently I missed the rule that the goalie could go all the way out to that big box to kick or throw it when they save a shot. My daughter was my goalie because none of the other kids wanted to be, she was pretty decent but not exactly big and strong. She would just kick it from inside that small box, none of us knowing any different, and the other team would get it immediately and score. This went on for most of the first game until the ref told me after the other team scored the first 10 goals what we were doing wrong.

Anyway, my best player was some 8 year old playing up that got private lessons and was homeschooled. I looked to him for all strategic moves...I think he was too embarrassed to correct me on that one. His dad rocked a man-bun and was less than impressed with me as a strategic coach.

My daughter never played soccer again.

They serve beer at swim meets and you’re basically hanging out by a pool on a weeknight during the summer so SIGN. ME. UP.

I coach teenagers. My most dreaded/stressed out time of year is our little kids camp. Those little guys running around not knowing how to dribble, pass, shoot, run a drill, keep their hands to themselves, not go to the bathroom every 3 minutes, not ask for their snack every 2 minutes, and not cry for their mommy at the drop of a hat seem to be skills most kindergartners lack or fail to use. I don't know how you guys do it.

My son is in 2nd grade and he "understands" basketball because he's in a gym every day from October until now. He's seen practices and heard "coaching" voices. But I'm not "coaching" him until he grows up some more. When he reaches 5th or 6th grade, I may get more involved in terms of his individual skill development/training. However, I am fully on-board with someone else coaching up his little rear end. As they say in the coaching fraternity, I'm on my back 9 and I'll probably be done by the time he gets to high school so he needs to learn to take instruction from someone other than me.

But man I can see how parents go nuts over their own kids' game. Every time he makes a play he always looks my way, like he's looking for affirmation. I'm usually sitting on the far side of the bleachers against a wall, not being loud at all. But he always knows where I am and he wants that thumbs up. :)

Vanderbilt’s gone? I get the let’s not risk another injury angle but he’s literally nowhere on any draft boards right now as a 1st or 2nd round pick.

I could easily see him getting a first round promise. NBA has gotten pretty savvy with the influx of stat geeks. He’s an elite rebounder and defender who can switch on almost every position, that’s a really important skill in today’s league.

Say what you will about its colorful language, really can’t be overstated what an awesome movie Gran Torino is.

As ready as none of these guys are, I'm still in my default state of assuming everyone is gone and being pleasantly surprised at whoever returns.

But yeah, I think Vanderbilt is gone.

Jay Williams: "I just wish Jay Bilas could go one half without criticizing the refs or NCAA."

:joy:[thumb2]

WTF happened to Bilas... when/why did he become so miserable?

Before the first TV timeout of the UNC/Miami game, he bitched that "Jim Larranaga must be SO DISAPPOINTED" three different times. And the score was like...10-8 at the first break. DISASTER!
