Can we get a list of the 8 appliances someone installing cabinets would have to account for? There's apparently some fancy appliances other than a range, fridge, dishwasher, and microwave that I've never even heard of.
1)Refrigerator, 2)Wall Oven, 3)Wall Oven 4) Cooktop, 5)Dishwasher, 6)Trash Compactor, 7)Wine Fridge, 8)Microwave, 9)Ice Maker

Including prep and clean up sinks, there are actually 11 set dimensions to account for, IMO.

Espresso Maker
Drawer dishwasher
Kimchi fridge

I could go on.

Yes, I lost by going to an overnight weekend tournament in Tn. Watching my kid have a ball with his buddies in the pool, at the arcade, and riding go carts was a terrible experience. Actually having watch my kid have fun playing sports made it even worse. Just an awful way to spend a weekend in Feb.

Kids playing sports are awesome. Assuming the role of interstate “chauffeur” for eight-year-old athletes sounds awful. What’s wrong with Upward or a Y?

I just signed up for parent-kid soccer practice through the summer with my toddler. Will report back. (And you’re damn right I strategically chose the location nearest to IKEA.)

After eight months of intense evaluation, my wife and I have decided that our son will be going pro in something other than sports.

I don't get all the travel stuff. We played Little League and Catholic League. Heading to St Edwards seemed like a long trip, much less Nash/Indy/Columbus/StL every weekend. Eff that.

Assuming this is happening to me in less than 5 years.

As a parent, I say "F" that travel ********. If I were still a kid, I'd be all over it.

Before PRP, I played at Prairie Village for 16-18 games, 3 All star games, then it was off to play whiffle ball in someone's back yard. Far cry from the 80+ games when I got to high school (summer and fall ball included).

Speaking of PRP, thoughts and prayers to Coach Miller whose having surgery today. Second father, really.

I was surprised when my brother in law told me Wee-ball (a step below t-ball) at Veterans Park is $100 so I’m sure I’m in for many years of price/time commitment shock once I have a kid old enough.

Being in a legit large metro area it is jaw dropping the amount of money parents spend on kids sports. Granted the DFW is sports crazy but it is still insane. And half the kids are pitiful but the parents refuse to believe it.

Played 60 baseball games a year all around KY/OH/IN. We loved it. Playing sports was fun. I’d highly recommend it, nerds.
Chad, we’re talking “travel” teams here. Not Metro leagues. Nice try.

In third grade, I played sports all day everyday. But, I didn’t need my parents to drive me to the games besides local leagues. We had a full baseball field up the street and most kids had their own hoops. Sorry, but that was my America. No more, for some, I guess. Sad!

Were the conventional "local" leagues broken in these youth sports? I never understood where the move towards club and travel team sports came from. (Other than to get away from the poors and blacks, of course.)

Baseball in Lexington is another level of crazy.
Baseball, soccer and basketball are where you see it most in Texas.

Flower Mound HS had 180 kids try out for...............the freshman baseball team. Had to cut 155 of them. It was more last year I've been told. Hopefully their parents didn't buy a new $500 bat every year in little league.

From strictly a parenting angle, having a kid involved in cross country is a pretty sweet gig. Get there 45-60 minutes before a race. Watch them take off and run into the woods. They run out 15-20 minutes later. You're home in time to catch just about all of the day's college football action.

No tournaments, no playing time issues, no crazy amounts of gear/uniforms to pay for, and it's pretty cool to watch your kid kick it into high gear down the stretch to pass/elbow some other kid so they can finish a spot higher.

I can tell you that in girls soccer it is a competition level thing. And because of smaller recruiting budgets it is best to go to tournaments or showcases where there will be great competition and lots of college coaches. That means a lot of travel.

Hardly any of the top soccer players play for their high school team. It's all club.

Our basketball travel has consisted of hitting tournaments around central Ky and playing at the KBA in Lexington a few weekends. I'm not even sure one would consider that "travel" basketball. The Tn trip was the only overnight trip. Local leagues around here are scarce and the place that used to do Upward quit doing it years ago.

This little team probably saved my sanity about the time UK was on it's 4 game slide honestly.

Travel baseball though, that's on a whole other level with some of the kids we know. My kid plays on a team that plays a tournament here and there but he also plays local league ball.

I agree with KL, cross country is hard to beat. Both of my boys have said that if I made them pick one sport that it would be XC.

-Interesting & in-depth article on Matthews' struggles this season:

-Gonna be really pissed if Vanderbilt shows just enough late-season for an NBA team to want to develop him. Fully expecting it. .
Yeah, none of us are paying for a subscription to The Athletic. Nice try. Keep it up and I steal your PW from ABH.

He gone. Cal is taking point on EJ Montgomery and seems to be as hard on him as anyone in recent memory. Not sure if that is to beat Duke but I'm assuming he's expecting Vando to leave.

Not a huge fan of travel, and my kid plays plenty of local ****. But when 119 kids try out for 6 teams, and only 10 kids make the travel team, you feel some obligation.

119? No clue how many on each team but thats easily enough to support an entire league.

I don't get it. We traveled all over town and to So Ind. Was fine, except St Raphael gym(iirc), was a bandbox POS.

Also, when it comes to crazy, Lexington baseball doesn't hold a candle to any cheerleading mom group in the country. TS. BATSHIT.

People should have more kids for no other reason than to cut out nonsense like traveling 1000 miles to play in a t-ball game at whatnot. I mean, you'll have your occasional weirdo who will have like 4 kids but still force their boys into the batting cage at 1 in the morning, but for the most part people obviously need their focus diffused

Single guy with no kids Chief seems to really have a handle on the inner workings of children’s sports. It’s not at all creepy.
Well....I've got 2 nieces and a nephew that I drive all over DFW for games and practices. Tend to pick up a few things here and there.

Soccer is a weird sport. If your kid wants to keep playing it as he gets older and get "good" at it, the rec leagues are worthless because the dads/coaches usually don't know what they're doing in terms of technical training.

I’ve done a fair bit of coaching because most parents don’t want to but I feel like I’m at least honest with them going forward- that my ability is pretty much capped at trying to get your kid to enjoy the game enough to want to play it again the next year and that they learn enough so that if they get asked to play with some friends they at least know what they’re doing.

I can’t say all of the other coaches share that attitude.

This is true, but I quit coaching at spencer county because once I began teaching real strategy and skills the head guy asked me to just focus on their little drills. Even though our kids got in games and had no clue they were out of bounds, had no clue to not have every player within 1 foot of each other, and could only shoot on goal if somehow they were simply the fastest kid and the ball popped loose toward their goal.
