I'd almost rather see an attempt at a long two than driving willie nilly into the lane and throwing up a wild layup.

Please run some offense.

Go Cats!

Guess Cal still looking for that close game.

Not sure what was worse. Halfcourt O or Halfcourt D.

Bad combo. Pretty humbling. It's 12/3 still. Lots of work to do.

Briscoe went Cliff Hawkins today. He'd do the same thing back in the day. Some team would get him on tilt and he wouldn't be worth a ****. Vandy was great at getting under his skin.

I'd like to blame a lot of the reaching, poor rebounding, cheap fouls, etc on youth. I hope.

Just couldn't ever get that stop to get over the hump.

:flush:

Only good thing about this loss is it exposed our weaknesses, particularly defensively. Hopefully we get it fixed for when it matters. Think these guys were reading their press clippings a little too much also. Humbling loss at home.

How about tell our guys not to take a damn long two every other possession?

We scored 92 points. We should never lose a game scoring over 85. I don't know how anyone's chief complaint coming out of this game can be anything related to the offense. We have one big man who can play defense on the entire roster right now. Gabriel needs to figure things out on that end with a quickness.

If you were Calipari how would you have game planned differently? It's not like he told his team to leave shooters, not block out, and become an emotional basket case over 1-2 missed foul calls. I'm sure none of that was on the white board.
No, but Cal struggles to set up a defense against a screen-heavy, swing offense. The entire purpose of the offense is to use screens (both on- and off-ball) to create mis-matches. By switching 1 through 5, Cal's defensive philosophy plays right into the entire purpose of the offense.

Wisky in the FF comes to mind as another example of a team that carved up Cal's defense.

Never said it was my chief complaint. One of many.

Figured someone as smart as you think you are would know OF COURSE we were miserable and weak defensively, as everyone has stated.

But taking long 2's is a very specific thing that a coach could instruct his players not to do every other possission.

You dance with who brought you. There's always going to be bad matchups. Cal's defensive philosophy didn't have **** to do with all the second looks they got today in the second half. That play when UCLA got five offensive rebounds was a great summation of the game. We got frustrated and reacted poorly. Where was the team that was killing themselves for loose balls up 40? Things didn't go their way and they pouted, bitched and moaned. The team was emotionally and mentally blown out. That starts with Briscoe. His attitude was contagious. Usually that's a great thing, but today it was the exact opposite.

I think this game is on the players, not the coach. Some of you are welcome to disagree if you would like to be on the wrong side of the issue. And I complain about Calipari as much as anyone here not named UKO.

We either

1) had a very poor defensive game plan and didn't have the right scouting report

Or

2) had no defensive game plan and didn't really have a scouting report

- TJ Leaf is an excellent player. Wow. That dude can ball. He was most impressive kid on the floor, IMO.

- Let me get back to the defensive schemes. It was the most bizarre thing with all the switches and matchups. I may need to go back and watch it again because I'm at a loss why we had certain guys guarding their dudes. It made no sense Bam marking Lonzo Ball, and it wasn't like he switched on him, either.

- Briscoe was atrocious and I agree with CoolCat. His full-on ***** mode is contagious and the young guys clearly look to him to carry themselves. He needs to get his **** together.

- Too much hero ball. For as good as Fox is, I think he may be dominating the ball a bit too much at times. In our stagnant half court O, he ball didn't move nearly enough and I didn't see the extra pass much at all. I think that **** is more easily correctable than our D right now.

- That Welsh guy can hit a faceup jumper, guys. Was that on the scouring report? I mean, just watch last year's film, Cal. Grief...

Things weren't easy, and they completely lost their composure. Fox taking bad shots, Briscoe talking instead of playing, no defensive adjustments. Everyone deserves blame, Cal included.

Glad we got Shows and Higgins in a game like this. Might as well get it out of the way early so the guys know how much the officiating can impact how you have to play.

Couldn't care less that we lost a basketball game in December overall, but it's the way we were worked -- giving up nearly a hundo, playing soft AF, bizarro defensive matchups, and acting like a bunch of whiny babies out there.

Our first response to adversity gets an F-

Sure that will improve with such a young team, but doesn't mean I'm not livid about it right now.
