The Rio de Janeiro state government declared a state of emergency earlier this month, prompting the federal bailout. It warned that a lack of funds may lead to "a total breakdown in public security, health, education, mobility and environmental management."

...

"The police fleet runs the risk of stopping. We managed to stretch the finances and we'll only last until the end of the week," Dornelles said.

...

Two days before the gruesome body parts discovery, the acting governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro warned that the Games could be a "big failure" because the state is out of money.

"I am optimistic about the games, but I have to show the reality. We can make a great Olympics, but if some steps are not taken, it can be a big failure," Francisco Dornelles told Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

...

A runner passes by the body parts that were found near the Olympics beach volleyball stadium, visible in the background.

...

There are other issues of concern of course, like the untreated sewage in the waters which athletes complained have made them break out in disease. The U.S. Olympic rowing team is taking extra precautions and will be wearing seamless antimicrobial unisuits to compete, while the German sailing team has been practicing trying to sail in trash-coated waters.

Nothing to see here, just business as usual, per PTI.
*raises hand*

"Um, yeah, so why are the body parts still there if the beach is open for joggers?"

In Rio I believe "Jogger" is pronounced with the alternative sounding "J" and phonetically it sounds like "Yogger" which may explain the speedo, but still does not address the dead individuals body parts scattered across the shore line.

Again, I've been trying to prepare GYERO for Olympic disaster since the Beijing games. This is the year. This is the time.

So, how could SAE get back into last haircut's convo on his next visit? I think a simple, " So, are your water bills still on the rise?" question would suffice.

Why would he want to get back into the last convo of her kid jacking off? I fail to see how that could be any woman's way of hitting on a man.

Correct. Helen is up to date with the current porn trends. It works like this: big beefy chested momma walks in on Jr whacking it all wrong. She peers down at him over her glasses and shakes her head, then licks her lips...

And I can't pretend to be cool with this trend. It weirds me out, and I want to know who likes that crap.

I just hope this Olympics isn't like the China Olympics, during which 1,000s of hardworking sports journalists died.

It's just an annuity. It would be interesting (for a nerd like myself) to have someone calculate the actual rate of return. Crazy as it may sound, it's possible the Mets got a bargain (if it were structured properly).

If I'm not mistaken, they didn't pay him for 5 years before the annuity kicked in. Time value of money, y'all.

I want to hear krazykat's take on this before I form an opinion either way.

I was just getting ready to ask krazykats about Rosland Capital, I really liked that dude in "Boiler Room" was going to give him a shot.

To be clear, paying Bobby Bonilla ANY amount of money for 25 years is hilarious.

But the finance need in me would still love to see the actual interest rate. Perhaps krazykats can spit this out on his BA II plus?

I'm no financeball, but apparently they owed him 5.9 million and will end up paying him 29.8 million, so I'm not sure how that's a great deal for the Mets. I'm also not sure how it wasn't a fantastic deal for Bonilla. There's basically a 0% chance he'd have turned 6 million into 30 million.

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/07/new-york-mets-bobby-bonilla-contract-2035-deal

Because of other aspects of what was happening for them it turned out good for them overall. Nice article about it which includes what could have been had Bobby Bonilla taken the buyout upfront and invested.

Welp, there ya go. Realistically, Bonilla would have blown the cash on hookers and craps. And the Mets went belly up on the Madoff scam.

But mathematically, it was a slam dunk for the Mets (on paper). Good to know there are at least two educated folk around here -- myself and krazykats -- who actually understand compound interest.

The rest of you? Egg-no-ra-mooses.

-I've met Joey. He could never dunk, nor could he hold a basketball in the air without dropping it.
Trust me. You don't want to question my glory day athletic bona fides.

I couldn't quite palm it, but I could get it up with one hand, through the rim, with fingers over the rim. When you try to dunk as a kid and you finally get somewhat close, you take what you can get for that personal achievement (I'm very white 5'-11 3/4"). (That's why I said technically." - A girl's ball was easy, btw.)

I do take solace in the fact that it's an achievement you will never come close to being able to experience, short stuff.

I didn't letter in golf though (nor shuffleboard or badminton). You got me there!!!
