Probably shouldn't even show up, fellas. This one is already over.
PG: Yogi vs. Ulis. Obviously two great players. Numbers nearly identical. Both very good defensively. Yogi's a much better shooter (41.7% vs. 34.2% from long range), so that's probably the most notable difference. Plus, Ulis played 37 minutes a game this year and at his size is probably going to struggle with Yogi's physicality.
Edge: INDIANA
SG: RJ vs. Briscoe. This one's not even close. The fact that Briscoe gets 32 minutes per game shows how little depth Kentucky has at guard. I had to triple-check this, but he's a 2-guard shooting 13% (!!!) from 3-point range and 43% (!!!) from the free throw line. Given IU's depth, using the NBA-style hack-a-Briscoe strategy might be a good approach. Meanwhile, RJ is at 43.6% on threes.
Big Advantage: INDIANA
SF/3rd Guard: Hartman vs. Murray. Hard to compare these two. No doubt Murray is the more likely pro, but Hartman has something you can't teach...grit. Murray is a good shooter, but not great - his % would rank fifth among IU rotation guys (would be sixth if you counted Blackmon), but is good enough for second at UK. I don't think there's any doubt that Hartman is the superior defender.
I'm tempted to call this one a tie, but in the end decided to give the:
Slight edge: KENTUCKY
SF/PF: Troy vs. Poythress: A couple of guys whose talent tantalizes the fan base. Numbers are very similar. Both are subpar shooters (although Poythress's 30.4% 3PT% ranks fourth on UK - ouch), with Troy a little better from outside. Troy's upside is undoubtedly higher - when he's on his game, he walks away with cbssports.com player of the week awards. His downside is also lower given his turnover rate.
Slight edge: INDIANA
C: Bryant (aka Gym Lion) vs. Labissiere: Talk about two guys whose freshman seasons have gone in opposite directions. Labissiere seems soft, has no real shooting touch outside of 15 feet, and is a liability on defense. Bryant, on the other hand, has been the emotional and physical anchor on the inside for the Hoosiers. His 3PT% of 41.7% is essentially the same as Murray's 42.1% (!!!), and he was one of the nation's leaders in overall FG%.
Big Advantage: INDIANA
Bench: Zeisloft, Bielfeldt, OG, Juwan vs. Willis/Lee/Hawkins/Humphries/Matthews: Kentucky has a lot of size off the bench, which is a real advantage. Really no quality depth at guard. That said, it's Willis who is probably the scariest player on the team from IU's perspective - he's the best 3-point shooter on the team and Kentucky seems to operate much better when he's out there (every minute Skal gets over him is a good minute for IU). On IU's side, the senior combo of sharpshooters in Ziesloft and Bielfeldt are critical to the IU offense...Bielfeldt may be outsized on the defenstive end in this one, however. OG and Juwan can guard all positions other than Ulis, so that defensive versatility and ability to rebound with bigger guys will be critical. The fact is that Indiana has 3 or 4 really quality bench players, but UK really only has 1 or 2.
Edge: INDIANA
Coach: Crean vs. Calipari: Currently Calipari leads by only 1 national title over Crean. But keep in mind that Crean is seven years younger. Just seven years ago, Calipari had zero final fours (he now has 4, but as we've seen it may be a little premature to count those) and zero titles. Assuming a similar career progression, I think it's safe to say Crean will surpass the raw numbers in due course. As for Xs and Os, Calipari has the benefit of five star recruits year in and year out, while Crean takes more diamonds in the rough like Wade, Oladipo, Verdell Jones and Remy Abell and helps to shape them into unforgettables. Plus, you can't say enough about how this team won the Big 10 without it's most highly coveted recruit in James Blackmon (and without Perea and Holt, who were both expected to be available this year). No slight to Cal, who is a great motivator and recruiter, but when it comes to the Xs and Os, it's really hard to beat what Tom Crean has done this year.
This one's easy. Big edge: INDIANA[laughing][roll][laughing]
Wow. I'm actually surprised to see that it came out this way. Was expecting it to be a bit closer given the seedings. Here's hoping it will be a great game. It's really amazing how similar these programs have been for the past several years. Every season has ended in the same finish for both teams, except for the one season when IU and Kentucky split two games between each other. Maybe this year will turn out to be another year worth remembering.
