My wife surprised me this morning by coming home with a rescue dog. I said to her, he is very cute, but we don’t have a fence yet, we have discussed this. She looked at me and replied, now you are getting a fence. So I’ve effectively been assessed a ~$5,000 penalty for my sins. Which is fair, I suppose.

Why? If your body is out of bounds in any sport when you touch the bal that is in bounds, the ball is immediately dead.

In any other sport if you touch the ball while you are out of bounds, the ball is out on you and possession goes to the other team.
Alabama was the last team to possess the ball. Basically had the ball went out of bounds possession would have stayed with BAMA. So in the event that a BAMA player is OOB and touching a loose fumble it makes the ball dead.
Same thing happens if the defense touches the loose ball while OOB before getting possession.
It remains with last team that possessed the ball.
