Randos:

-Invitational last weekend. 79 Day 1, perfect weather, friendly setup.....72 on Day 2, w/ 3 hours of driving rain & Sunday pins. Golf is weird.

Holed out for an eagle 2 from the fairway on 18 Sunday, in front of a nice crowd gathered to watch the finishers. Huzzahs and hugs all around. Easily One of the coolest singular moments of my golfing life...the sport is neat like that sometimes.

Threw my club up in the air and let out a high-pitched yelp like a little girl, lmao. Lost myself for a second. Knew that would be good for a skin, and it was....nice lil $800 shot to finish the weekend. 🏌️‍♂️

-Inflation: At least it gives me an unarguable excuse for all the rate-increase calls/emails I'm receiving of late. Nothing anyone can really say....maybe call your local representative?

-I have a POS washing machine that came with the new crib that can't really handle my comforter...so I just buy the same one every quarter on Amazon for $30.

-My club has lots of Michigan vacation people...they never stop gushing about it. Most have places around Traverse City area. Pics always look amazing.

-Trying not to let myself think about a Wagner/Dillingham backcourt, but good grief man.

-Not to step on Joshie's toes, as he's next level worshipper....but Better Call Saul is just a beautiful show.

-Anyone done any preview London pricing? Shew

-Too bad Enjoy! Hemp doesn't have some sort of referral code/program...Wynn would have a free lifetime supply, if so. And I'd have a nice lil stash myself....lost track of how many texts I've gotten asking me about those products. What a great little deal that is.

-Anyone else already over summer, and in full BRING ON FALL mode?

-Had a little 4 pack of Nutter Butters last night from Cart Girl for an emergency snack. Guessing I hadn't had those since I was a teen...still pretty dope, unlike so many nostalgic snacks that just don't hold up over time.

-Little over 3 weeks til Mexico. I travel all the damn time, but haven't had a proper full week/beachy/noplans pure relax vacation since Pre Covid. Cannot WAIT. Really just burnt TF out on damn near everything at the moment, need a total disconnect/recharge in the worst way.

-You used to have to turn on the windshield wipers and that's why I and everyone else I grew up with has damn cancer or whatever.

In a recent cleaning binge- found a big brick looking external hard drive that was nothing but my Napster music from college. Some real gems in there... song titles with one letter off so the feds cant track me, songs that were horribly uploaded and sound like youre listening to a cassette while going through a car wash... I did USB it to my car port and it loaded up and started firing off songs. Cant bring myself to part with it even though all that stuff is available on spotify.

Nantucket was dope, as always.

Writing a eulogy for my grandmother who recently passed. My dad is going to give it at the funeral. I had a fairly active grandparent for 40 years of life- so thats pretty amazing. Heading up this weekend for the service. I grew up with them basically living a street behind us so I spent most of my time in and out of there house too. One of the regrets I do have about my daughter not seeing all of her grandparents regularly.

Booking some courses in Scotland this fall, and just asked my dad to join us over there. His wife is going to help with the baby, and we are going to play some proper links. Anyone ever used ShipSticks? Its pricey but I dont want to haul my clubs around London for a week before going to Scotland.

I go through highs and lows with work, just like anyone, but damn if im not in an extended period of low. Its fine- just been doing the same thing every single day for a long time, with a long time left to do it.

- Yeah, Wodie- that’s why I was asking about Michigan/other beaches. Don’t get me wrong, Bahamas will be great but it’s essentially a family visit. I haven’t had a “no plans” long vacation in years. Those Michigan commercials have gotten to me.

- I’m with you, @RibsAndWhiteBread - in a work rut. I’m sure we’re not alone. COVID years haven’t helped and the dog days of summer contribute as well. Overall, love my job but just been off of late.

- If Toppin can actually become a decent long range threat and/or give us some playmaking, that would go a long way.

- Can actually see in the mirror how much I’ve aged since becoming a Dad. Who is that guy?

- This age is so fun though - she learns a different word every day, sings, is a ton of fun, and thinks I’m hilarious.

- Dana O’Neill marcus welby Gonzaga and Villanova’s beat writer.

- So what’s the general GYERO concern level on our line and pass-catchers?

PTI(pti) loves harping on Toppin's averages like a blind buffoon, but it's not ALL his fault he was stuck behind Cal's loyalty to Brooks.

Per 40 averages can be a bit misleading, but his true numbers would have obviously been MUCH better w/ the time many felt he deserved...his true stats definitely aren't reflected of the improvement he's made since arriving on campus & his overall impact when he was on the floor for extended stretches. He had several real gems last year when he was out there an appropriate amount of time, and healthy.

I think he needs to be able to make some shots outside for sure, but just being his active self & making plays is something I fully expect to happen at a much increased Level:

<--- been riding w/ Poppin from Day 1, and this year it all comes to fruition.

From Tucker's Mailbag today:

Who do you think (or hearing) will make the biggest leap from last year, including transfers? — Mark F.

Who do you think, based on what you’re hearing behind the scenes, has a Tyler Herro-type surprising Bahamas performance coming this time around? — Dylan M.

Great question(s), and I’d say Collins is in that conversation. But it’s got to be Jacob Toppin, because I genuinely believe he could go from a three-year role player to maybe a starring role on a national title contender. He’s a superb athlete who has bulked up and improved his jump shot this offseason and, by all accounts, is playing with supreme confidence after spending the summer training with his brother, Obi (a famous late bloomer), and other NBA players in L.A. while going through the pre-draft process. His per-40 averages last season — 14.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.2 blocks — and shooting numbers (57.1 effective field-goal percentage, 74.5 percent at the line) are encouraging. And the guy who casually threw down a 360-degree dunk at Auburn last season is drawing rave reviews from the coaching staff.

I like Toppin, but most of Cal's players don't even stick around 3 years. He's somehow been the highest upside player in the history of the program for that many seasons. Just ready for him to materialize, and not just be a guy that gets a few minutes at a time and shows some flashes. We shall see.

Imagine the "big story" from your conference media day is a spat with Syracuse football. That has to be depressing for bird gang. I enjoy. Lets us remember it's a great time to be a UK wildcat.

Agree, and think we will.

He’s a starter, just hopefully not at the 3 😬

College basketball players generally improve with age. We just don’t see guys stay very often.

Especially bigs. I know it will draw laughs, but I expect another nice Leap from Ware as well. Obviously most of his time is dependent on Oscar's fouls, but he made some pretty noticeable gains last year I thought.

Dude knows how to play, and is tough as nails. Finishing is an issue, but he's always in position...even with his limitations, he's a very solid backup & I hope we have him 2 more years.

We literally NEVER have experienced strong bodies down low...well, until Oscar. The same guys other SEC teams seem grow on trees that stay 7 years and beat our talented/skinny young dudes up with over the years.

A luxury, imo.

I'm not concerned about WRs. We don't have any single player that can impact a game this season like Wandale did last year, but we have a ton more talent across the board. Tavyion Robinson, Keaton Upshaw, and Dee Beckwith are all talented players with high D1 experience that we didn't have last season. We've added a lot of great talent in the last two classes as well.

OL does concern me a bit though, especially early in the year. We are replacing 3 starters, one of which was the best OL of our lifetime at at UK. We also have a new coach and are going full bore into a new blocking scheme. There is definitely room for things to get off track there. We do have some very talented and large guys across the line, and the mindset of that group is still solid. Having Drake Jackson as a GA helps me feel better about it too.

Don’t track OL coaches, but our OL has outperformed its expectations since about year 2 of the Stoops era………not concerned there at all. Get ‘em big, get ‘em strong, make sure they have decent footwork and then teach them the rest. Also I assume Goodwin takes over Buford at LT a few games in and becomes the new “best OL in our lifetime”.

WR also feel the same as 80. No particular go to guy(yet), but with the players we have across the whole field not having that guy makes it harder for a defense that’s already focused on the run.

The only concern I have is the secondary.

- The idea of KD joining the Bulls possibly is a pretty fun idea. DeRozan, LaVine, and KD. Shew!

Been a minute...

- I want it to be Jon Sumrall (when Stoops moves on or hangs it up). I think he has "it", and I think he has some of that Stoops dog in him. As natural a fit as I thought Neal Brown would be, he hasn't lit it up at WVU and would be a big change, style- and personality-wise. But I think if Sumrall wins at a high clip at Troy, he'd take this job in a heartbeat and would maintain the same mentality that has served Stoops well.

And yes, I could see Drake Jackson being an OL coach lifer, absolutely. He's just an incredibly bright guy and a great communicator for someone so new to coaching.

- It's pretty much clockwork that this is the week each year when I start looking at the opening weekend of CFB games to see how I'm going to set my viewing schedule accordingly. And I don't mean the scrub "Week Zero" slate, but the actual Week One lineup. What an unbelievable slate: Cincy/Arkansas, Oregon/Georgia, Notre Dame/Ohio State, Utah/Florida. And even some of the second-tier games have potential: LSU/Florida State, Penn State/Purdue, West Virginia/Pitt.

- This is an evergreen statement, but good grief, does The Cats Pause have any editors for their FB/BB yearbooks? I found a half-dozen errors just in a cursory glance last night alone. Take the time to get stuff right, it's not that hard.

- Also about college football...spent a few days in Bozeman last summer, and they love their Montana State Bobcats. Followed along from a distance as they made a run to the FCS title game. I know it's not a replacement for big-time college football, but it has to feel nice knowing that if your team makes it to the playoffs, they have the same chance as everyone else(on paper) to win the thing. Enjoyable viewing as well...I'd much rather watch top-level FCS teams play than a couple of random MAC teams slugging out a 10-7 final on a Wednesday night.

- Closed on the sale of my dad's house yesterday. What an exhausting process it's been. We sold it relatively quickly, but then spent the past four weeks trying to get rid of everything in it, either by sale, donation, or giving to family members. Here's a tip...if your parents are getting up there, find a way to help them figure that stuff out now. Especially the stuff in their attic/garage/etc. that they don't see every day. Not only will it save time/stress later, when that stuff HAS to go somewhere, but it might also be enjoyable to find some cool family-related stuff you didn't even know they had.

- Chad, you asked about my daughter...of the schools she's visited, I'd say right now it's 50/50 between Vandy and UK. But we have two more swings of visits (one to schools in NC, the other to schools in VA/DC), and I know she's really into some of those, so I don't think she's anywhere close to a decision.

- Gustav Holst's "The Planets" has gotten me through a lot of stressful times lately...especially the Jupiter piece.

- You’ve been through it the last couple years, buddy. Hope things are looking up.

- As I have opined in this very thread on more than one occasion, Labor Day is ascendant. Just an outstanding holiday weekend I look forward to more and more every year.

- My dad is a pack rat - not the least of which is a ridiculously extensive collection of Kentucky memorabilia. Dude has autographs from every Wildcat from star to walk on from Wah Wah to Todd Svoboda. It’s absurd and I often think about what the hell I’m going to do with it all.

- Those are some pretty good schools. Virginia is chock full of great schools. Hit up William & Mary if you can.

Of the NC schools...Wake easily has the most impressive campus, one the best in the country...but Winston-Salem isn't really a college town. The campus is in a weird part of town, not really convenient to anything.

Go by my mom's office, she'll hook you guys up with some swag.
