I bitched a lot about the officiating (it was rough) and the FT disparity was basically the game, but I'm still infinitely less pissed about that than I am having a coach incapable of adapting in any way. Someone mentioned in the offseason that having ENG's goofy smiling face on the bench is going to give us Tubby vibes all year and I'm here to tell you that little toucher can pound sand (Cal and ENG).

9-18 in our last 27 games.

Don't discount Toppin's work on D against Banchero with Brooks. Toppin was forcing the ball out of his hand on nearly every possession where he was able to setup as the defender. Brooks thinking he's some Grant Hill hybrid playing on the perimeter all game and refusing to help Oscar in the trenches is going to wake me up in two hours ready to punch a wall.

...and to act like this is some super talented Duke team. 10, 11, 12, 15, 17 all murk this Duke team. They're average.

Pretty shocking for them to be that much bigger. Not sure ai recall that from a cal team. Another reason, we may want to play more shooters.

Listening to Cal on the postgame....first time I think I’ve ever heard him stumbling over questions. The Network cut off a few answers because it seemed like he was disjointed.

This Duke win was essentially us in the past 12 years. Horrible exterior shooting, superior athleticism and basically two guys carrying a bunch of mid level guys. The only difference is that K realized what he had and worked around it whereas Cal would have been trying to figure out how to get Paolo to start his post up from 18 feet out without ever teaching entry angles on passing lanes to his guards.

I want Brooks to be good, in theory he’s the type of guy we’ve been clamoring for to come back and be better every year.

But damned if he’s not a liability. Takes bad shots (some will fall occasionally), doesn’t rebound and seems almost always out of position on both ends of the floor.

Toppin is better and Hopkins probably has more upside.

Shew we, losing to UT and Duke in a 4 day span will test you mettle as a fan.

Brooks can't put it together because he can't generate any points from the free throw line. He isn't explosive or crafty enough with or without the ball to get defenders to foul him. His utter lack of free throw attempts sunk his TS% last year and it looks to be the case again this year. If you don't get to the line at all, you better be a finisher and/or a strong perimeter shooter otherwise your shooting will always be mediocre.

Man I was 20' off the floor at midcourt tonight. Physically we aren't anywhere close to Duke. They are so much bigger than us at every position it's staggering. Obviously I don't have the answer, but expecting anything from this bunch is foolhardy.

Nice kids and ballplayers, but tykes. Granted, I was hammered, but I was astonished by it all.

TyTy was not strong enough to produce with Keels guarding him. He was shook.

The game was lost in that 6 minute stretch where he played hero ball and missed every shot or turned it over.

Defense is good enough, and Wheeler can create and has great vision. His two cross court passes to Grady off the opposite side pick n roll we’re just beautiful.

Oscar is so big, but very slow.

Curious what a five of Wheeler Mintz Grady Toppin Brooks would look like. Will never happen.

Separating Cal from his legacy for a moment, and I honestly believe 90% of college coaches could have coached us to a victory tonight. They bricked anything outside of 15 ft, TyTy with too much leash in the second, and we did nothing at all to stop them from catching Oscar/Ware in pick n roll.

At least we only have one more 9 pm tip and that is Mississippi State on January 25 -- a game I am already planning to watch 10 minutes of before going to sleep.

I hate the Champions Classic to start the season. I think it would be a better product for ESPN if it was held the first week of December or on Christmas.

Hopefully the football defense gets its mojo back against Vandy and we end the season strong, I guess.

If I hear Cal say…We need to learn to fight or “I loved our fight” one more time I’m going to vomit. Yes, basketball is a lot about effort and who wants it more but there’s a ton of it that comes down to proper execution, which he doesn’t seem to emphasize. And that’s why it seems we constantly have these ugly games.

NOT ONCE in the 2nd half did we run anything designed for Grady, despite the dude drilling three 3 pointers in the first half.

Ware and Toppin together should never happen. In fact, Toppin needs to be playing all of Ware’s minutes for the most part. Ware seems like a great kid who plays hard but he’s late Tubby era talent.

Throwing the ball 30 feet towards halfcourt leaving your guard scrambling to collect the ball while 2 defenders collapse on him isn't an OOB play?

- I’d play Toppin as our backup 5. He’s long and athletic. Not particularly strong but he’ll mix it up and would benefit him offensively.

- I think Hopkins has potential to be our 4. We’ll see.

- Bottom line, you have a jet PG who’s good at getting in lanes and finding shooters. And a big who doesn’t need the ball to be effective. And a handful of shooters. We could be tough to guard with this recipe - make it about getting Fredrick, Allen, Washington, Grady and Mintz shots. Let Tschibwe clean up.

- Tyty will be okay. I don’t think he’s a superstar but he can be Johnson/Herro-level with some seasoning.

-I think we’re ranked fairly accurately. Despite the deserved and reasonably felt redass, we can be a pretty solid squad.

- Duke hasn’t improved from November-December in 5 years. I’m doubting this bunch does much either. Kansas looks legit- similar team to us in makeup but their wings are much better and Self knows how to play them.

- Loss and all, it was good to have those basketball nerves again. Great time of year.

TyTy is a baller, had a horrible night in his first real game. It happens. If he gives us what he's capable of I think we win last night.

Obviously can't depend on Wheeler to carry the scoring load. Had some head scratchers, but overall had a heckuva game and kept us in it while TyTy was off on another planet.

Oscar. Geez, dude is a hoss. Gotta keep him on the court.

Banchero handles the ball like a guard. Will be a difficult match up for any team.

Set some damn plays for Grady and, when he's back, CJ.

Had fun at Demsey's and checked off "Game at MSG" on the bucket list.

I don’t get all the Wheeler is a baller hype. He looks like an average freshman to me, meaning he needs to improve his strength and stamina to be a consistent star at this level.
