I hate to pick on the kid -- because he plays hard and has said all the right things -- but Devin Askew (or the void where he plays) is the primary reason this team sucks.
We can talk about Sarr being a huge gash, Brooks' weak hands and inconsistency, Jackson's foul troubles, BJ Boston being hugely underwhelming , Cal's horrible sub patterns and personnel strategy all/air (triggered!!! for me) etc etc etc... but you need a PG that can make **** 'go' and we basically have poor man's Saul Smith back there running things.
His (+/-) numbers are horrendous, but what really kills this team is his indecisiveness and inability to do 'anything' on the floor. He's simply a vacant body who simply brings the ball up and whips it around. He doesn't really initiate anything, half-heartedly probes. He has zero confidence to make plays and I feel awful for him, whether it's of his own doing or Cal's. I'd be more than fine with him shooting 38' threes or driving the ball into 3-4 people, at least he was making the defense read/react. But it's 4v5 when he's out there now.
He doesn't break anyone down off the dribble, so everyone else plays straight up. The defense rarely has to send help, leaving everyone smothered. For Sarr, the defense can recover the high ball screen because Askew can't (or won't) turn the corner and won't shoot over the top. For Jackson, Askew can't (or won't) straight-line drive his guy so there's few opportunities for lobs. For Boston, Askew still can't (or won't) beat his guy to open up the wing for open jumpers.
Dykes said it several times last night that we don't have a PG that can break anyone down. If you can't get by guy # 1, the defense domino effect doesn't happen and everything is difficult for everyone. Nothing comes easy and everything is a grind.
If your primary ball handler struggles to do anything well and won't make legitimate intentional basketball plays to 1) attack 2) shoot 3) create, he can't (and won't) make his teammates successful. Bless his heart but that's where we're at. And that's with me hating Cal with a fury and doing absolutely nothing to help this team by his gross mismanagement/ego.

I don't want Askew to bolt, I want him to be a quality back up for 2 years then take the reigns.
I did not watch ONE single play. I was dicking around on my phone trying to set my NBA lineup on FanDuel. I looked up it was 10-2 or something, switched it right off and to TNT to watch NBA.

And maybe worst of all about Askew is that we really, really need him to come back for 1-3 more years. He's been my whipping boy since he signed, simply because he was LITERALLY a child when he got here. Re-classified and was 17 f'ing years old when he got to campus. Of course he was going to suck his freshman year. He never should have been put into the position of playing 30 minutes/game in the first place. We need him to stick around, improve, mature, grow, and be ready to contribute as a junior or senior.

Herro, Knox, Monk, Murray, Booker, Dakari, Willis, Young, Nelens, Goodwin, MKG, Davis, Teague, Kanter, were all younger than or within 6 months of Askew their freshman year.
Maybe I'm crazy but I think 21 year old Askew is also going to suck. He's not talented enough to play here. Is what it is. JMO.

We’re not used to guys improving here but it happens regularly at normal programs.
Not enough resources at Kentucky for a kid to improve year over year. Better served in Europe or the G League.
People forget Askew is only 13. So hard to judge an adolescent.

The point is many, many college freshmen start at the exact same age that Askew started, and they were not "children" reclassifying. It's just when they f*cking finished school with the class they started with.

The legal term is infant. Askew was still an infant in June 2020 while on campus.
If your point is Askew sucks, I agree. But to lay it all at the feet of him being 18 as a college freshman is f*cking dumb, as you've been told 500 times.
The problem with saying his confidence is shook is that if he knows the plays nothing else matters. Take bad shot, so what it isn’t like he’ll get pulled for long as there is no one else to play.

As overrated as Boston was, no one failed bigger than Sarr this year. We started talking final four when he announced he was coming here. I think we would have won more games without him. What a giant *****.
I would much rather have Mintz and Askew return to split time at the 1 than to have Skyyyy reclass. I'm just a benny though, so what do I know.

No question that Sarr has dodged a lot of fire taken by Askew and Boston, Clarke quitting and Cal just taking a crap on the court and rolling around in it.

I don’t think Askew is going to magically get more athletic, and that seems to be a key issue. Again, watch his high school tapes. He was playing against country club kids.

The worst part of having no-fans this season is Cal has gotten to escape the wrath of a pissy Rupp crowd. He should have to wallow in this pile of **** he produced.
It seems like expectation wise 96 & 78 were similar. The Beasman needed to get that title to partially eliminate the shadow of Rupp. I think I have some book or something about that year titled “A Season Without Joy”.

Pretty sweet that both teams and coaches delivered under such pressure. I get that we always seem to live in now but it’s good and healthy to look back sometimes and relive the glory moments considering we do have the richest history in the entire damn sport.

Even on a reclass you can’t replace a whole year of basketball experience just because he was the same age.
He wasn’t at the same experience level and most here should be able to relate to the growth from your JR year vs your SR year if you played.
