On the fence on this one. On one hand, it would hold schools in check. On the other, there are a ton of private school pricks with $150K of worthless degrees that I'd like to see continue to struggle.

If this becomes precedent, it will have huge effects for the debtors but I'm not totally sure how it will effect lendors and colleges (especially in the short-term).
I could be mistaken, but I believe most of these loans are federally guaranteed so the lendor may actually hope the loans get discharged in bankruptcy so Uncle Sam is on the hook versus some sociology major with $150k in student loans that will never ever be repaid. I'm sure it is more complicated than that.
Loaning hundreds of thousands of dollars that can only be discharged thru death or permanent disability to a child with no credit history, income requirement, or collateral....

Unpayable debts can be cancelled and the lenders will stop giving
$100k to randos to attend community colleges. Seems like a win all around without the political disaster of having Congress cancel the debt through spending
Plus, lenders absolutely don’t want the government to reimburse them. A check for the principal might be good in cases where the debtor is literally making zero payments and never will, but most people are probably on some kind of income based repayment plan. Lenders will make twice the principal in sweet, sweet usury over the life of the loan. The government writing them a check for $40k 2 years after someone graduates is the last thing they want.
