Red wine randoms for wcc:
  • If you like Petite Sirah, these four are excellent and readily available at Total Wine. I love PS as well but it can be tough to find around here.
  • With your in-laws in Williamsburg, you should acquaint yourself with Cabernet Franc. Some very good producers over near Charlottesville. CF would be right down your alley. It's a little lighter than Petite Sirah, and not as jammy, but outstanding when done right. Trivia: Cab Franc is a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon (the other is Sauvignon Blanc).
  • Pinot Noirs can be extremely good, but you'll pay for them. It's a tough varietal to get right, so you'll get a lot of crap PN. It's a little too light for my taste anyhow.
  • If you want a red that you can serve cool on a warm/hot day, look for Beaujolais, Chianti (not Classico), and Dolcetto d'Alba. These will be lighter and fruitier with softer tannins and higher acidity.
  • Here are the most common red varietals and a few words/recs for each:
    • Cabernet Sauvignon - big, full-bodied, tannic. Perfect for fatty meats because the tannins cut through the fat. New World Cabs tend to be fruitier, while Old World Cabs are earthier (my preference). Napa Valley Cabs are overpriced, but they ARE very good. Some excellent Napa producers that are generally < $50 are Sequoia Grove, Clos Pegase, Mount Veeder, Black Stallion, Freemark Abbey, and Courtney Benham.
    • Zinfandel - there's no such thing as "red Zinfandel." The Zinfandel grape is red. White Zin is simply Zinfandel that hasn't spent as much time with the skins. And it's for girls. Zinfandel itself is high in alcohol, fruit-forward, spicy, full-bodied, and less tannic than Cab. I think it's one of the harder ones to pin down because of the variability in taste. It can take on many different "personalities," so it's a fun one to explore.
    • Syrah/Shiraz - more acidic than Zin, with moderate tannins. A good one to try if you're looking for something similar to Petite Sirah, but less tannic and less body. As with most reds, New World Shiraz (Australia mainly) is fruitier than Old World Syrah (France mainly).
    • Merlot - gets a bad wrap because of "Sideways," but it can be outstanding. It's similar to Cabernet Sauvignon, but not as tannic. It's also more "blue-fruit" than Cab, and you can even get some mocha notes.
    • There are hundreds more reds out there, and thousands more if you include blends. Malbec is one that is increasingly popular and can be very good. Some that aren't as popular but are worth checking out: Carmenere (Chile), Tannat, Petit Verdot, Mourvedre, Pinotage.
  • I didn't list Bordeaux above because it's a blend, and so difficult to discuss generally. The red Bordeaux blend consists of 5 varietals, in varying amounts - Cab Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, with the first two dominating. There is tons to be said about Bordeaux reds - left bank vs right bank, the different appellations, vintages, etc, but suffice to say that at their best, in my opinion, it gets no better. A good Pauillac, to me, is perfection. Unfortunately, the price tag matches. Regardless, there are tons of affordable Bordeaux out there, so go explore.

Sorry for the long post, but wine is a passion.

Thank you, my friend.

That post was for wcc, not the mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging PBR drinkers among you. Chad is evolving and trying valiantly to pull the rest of the GYEROmen along and I applaud him.

Much like Patrick Sparks in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, I’m doing everything I can to put this thread on my back and drags these bums to the next round.

73’s OCD has him thinking about Covid 24 hours a day.

Anth makes 73 seem normal.

SAE’s abandoned us.

BBdK has become a degenerate second rate horse player.

We lost PTI back in 2011.

UCL has straight given up.

Max is too f’ing good for everyone.

Richie’s hanging on by a thread.

Joey I mean WTF.

Chase can GF.

Tommy’s dedicating all his time to framing well-meaning Democrats.

Who TF knows with Willy- that POS.

Seems the pandemic has actually brought Dougan down a notch, which I’m not sure is good or not.

Showkilla is now bitter and partisan as all get out.

Really, the only one who seems happy right now is DocBoat, obliviously hammering steaks and yachting all the damn time.

Then there’s me- trying to keep this place afloat. You’re all welcome, pricks.

* Hey Chad. F*ck you. Come up and drink my bourbon, eat some good food and play Golden Tee any time you want.

* I enjoy Miller Lite & Coors Light. Not a huge fan of Bud Lite but I will drink it if Anth is buying.

* My wife is a big Pinot Grigio fan. I frequently finish the bottle for her, so I too, now enjoy Pinot Grigio. I enjoy most reds as well.

Especially Votto and Suarez.

* FCC with a gift from Atlanta today. I'll take it.

* 14# brisket going on at 1 am tomorrow night (technically Saturday morning).

* I think we probably needed Hagans playing well to win it all last year, but Brooks was showing some signs and Juzang might have come on (and stayed here for another year) with more PT if Hagans was done for good.

I rewatched the Louisville and @Florida games today. Maxey was spectacular against UL and Richards took over in OT. Brooks really played well vs the Gators, but WTF was he doing on the last play? Let the dude dribble right up the court to get a good look. Played Pelphrey style spectator D.

Please let them play this year, basketball covid Gods.

* Hot new jogger/dog walker in the hood. She doesn't wear a lot of clothes right now. I love summer.

* ****, it's quittin' time, boys. Have a good evening. I'm out.

No matter what, wine has the most chill *** buzz of all alcohol, and it’s not really close.

AND you can drink an entire bottle without a hangover.

Welcome to the fold sommelier, nice entrance.

I applaud Chad, and I will support his efforts. He gets it.

Can easily tell Coors light, Miller lite and bud light apart...childs play.

Added another weapon to the arsenal, Blackstone griddle gonna be fun. I’ll be a hibachi ninja master before you know it. Champagne saber say hello to flaming onion volcano.

In 2006 we barely beat UAB by 4 and lost to UCONN in the second round. Really odd comparison. Got to listen to Papa 73 rail on Tubby and we crushed some Philly Cheesesteaks.

Chad’s post got me thinking. While really not similar, 2020 does kinda remind me of living on the gulf coast 10 years ago during the BP oil spill...everyone predicting the devastation that would come. The beaches and marine life would be ruined, life as we loved it would be over for a long time.

So we lived it up everyday we could, acting like it could be our last. And miraculously, Destin was pretty much spared thanks to a nice offshore current.

The first few months of Covid in Kentucky have been milder than expected, but I’m seeing more cases every week this past month, and in more rural places. The show must Go on. We are at war with this virus. We will persevere.

Stay safe wildcat friends.

Hey sommelier, what do you think of this study that rocked the wine world and basically made wine experts look like BS artists:

https://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2014/08/the_most_infamous_study_on_wine_tasting.html

Rose, a good French Rose, in the hot sun is crisp and refreshing, really not up for debate.

Absolutely love port wine, no clue why. Find it delicious after a nice meal, might be the gay little glasses it’s comes in but I love a tawny port.

Along similar lines: If you’re a male who doesn’t have a son or a female who doesn’t have a daughter you’re the first person in your direct line to do that since creation.

ie. your father had a son, his father had a son, his father had a son, etc. etc.
