Someone mentioned it yesterday, but I seriously can't wait to see how much officials gyrate when they make a charge call in a game with no fans. And on top of that, I'm looking forward to seeing the statistics to see if they call fewer charges per game.

It's almost a certainty they'll be subdued and far fewer charges will be called.

There's almost zero chance they cancel the tournament. No crowds, highly likely, but outright cancelling it would be an insane move by the NCAA.

This is their money maker. Billions of dollars a year in TV rights. You really think the NCAA is just going to give that up? LOL

And before you say insurance, there is a 99.999999999% chance it doesn't provide coverage for voluntary cancellation.

If we take drastic efforts to curtail this (which I agree with) and nothing crazy happens pandemic-wise, both sides will declare victory and it will be annoying as hell.

Those who thought it would be a catastrophe: “We saved the world!”

Those who have been brushing it off: “See...it was just the liberal media hyping this up!”

Kinda like literally every issue on anything nowadays.

I would think that ratings would be through the roof this year if they don't cancel.

I’d give it 50 50 chance of happening. They are going to shut down things for 2-3 weeks pretty much across the board. NY is panicking. That doesn’t help matters. They just cancelled Catholic schools here and the public schools won’t be far behind.

There's nothing funny about this. Nothing whatsoever.

March Madness is the best sporting event in the world and a Kentucky team involvement in it is 99% of this thread's favorite thing in life (outside of the obvs families, jobs, obscene hobbies, pets, etc)

I'm nervous AF someone will make a (knee jerk) decision & take it away from me. The more and more the dominoes (school, church) fall... the more dread I have that it will spill over to the Tourney.

Are people erring on the side of true caution or are they in a race to cancel **** because they don't want the optics of not canceling ****? No one wins and this all sucks.

Mostly agree, but *zero* chance the NCAA pulls the plug on crowds. With cities/counties like Santa Clara and Seattle instituting bans on large crowds, I imagine the NCAA will let the local governments be the bad guys here....

Think the people who don’t die might win.

But there’s no way to prove the negative, so shoutout to catholic_back’s “complaining about the unknowable” coming to pass in only 7 posts and not 7 months. Nice work.

If they had cancelled the 2015 tournament we would have never lost to Wisconsin. Something to consider. Also worth considering the van full of explosives BJW would have subsequently parked next to NCAA headquarters.
I know you're joking and God did that hurt bad but looking back it was pretty great watching UK try to obtain what in today's parity is pretty close to unattainable. That said youtube recommended to me a video on the UK/Wisc game this morning and it made me want to punch threw my screen.

The NCAA won't cancel the tournament because it absolutely could not survive financially without it. I believe 95 to 99% of their annual revenue (IIRC from that great book The Cartel from about 10 years ago, which exposes the NCAA for the BS sham the whole agency is).

The rise of March Madness in the 80s came just in the nick of time for the NCAA, just as it lost all its college football TV money. Without the tournament, it would not exist.

I can't see them refunding all that advertiser money, it would kill them. But I guess (hypothetically) if it happened, the death or restructuring of the NCAA might be a silver lining.

And TV viewership would go through the roof, but I doubt it would help the NCAA in the long run. Those rates are negotiated long in advance, and I doubt advertisers would pay more in the future based on higher viewership caused directly by such an unusual circumstance.

So I guess what I'm saying is, give me March Madness but I still wish the worst for the NCAA itself, and hope it DIAV.

50/50 for crowds maybe, 73. I think it's about a .1% chance they'd cancel the entire thing. You gotta remember, money is more important than lives, especially to the NCAA. So until they are forced to do so, the NCAA isn't canceling ****.

I know it sounds fun but after this is done we still need to be able to run the country without killing the economy in the meantime. Canceling a multi-billion dollar event has a pretty big ripple effect. Pretty delicate balance b/w being responsible for both.

I agree with you, so shove your rolleyes up your ***. I was pointing out that this is a business decision for the NCAA. Crass, maybe, but grow up. You can bet your *** they are more concerned with their bottom line at this point in time. Now, if tens of thousands of otherwise healthy people were dropping dead daily, they may shift their priority to lives.

But right now, yes, it's a balancing act, and we all know which way the NCAA is going to decide. It will have to get drastically worse, fast, before they cancel the entire tournament. And I agree with that.

Play it without crowds, but cancelling it outright would be another gigantic kick in the balls for the economy, and would cause further panic because of the scale and popularity of it. It also wouldn't really do a hell of a lot more to prevent the spread than playing without crowds.

The mayor of New Rochelle specifically said the military is not there to do what 73 is saying they are there to do.

"Beginning Thursday, members of the state National Guard will be deployed to New Rochelle to clean schools and to deliver food to quarantined residents and thousands of students who are now facing two weeks at home without free or reduced cost meals. Mr. Cuomo said that large gathering places in the containment area, including schools, community centers and houses of worship, would be closed for two weeks.

The state did not plan to close streets or to impose travel restrictions,
TMr. Cuomo said, noting that he was only “containing facilities” where the virus might spread. Businesses like grocery stores and delis will remain open."
