I don’t see this team as any worse than 2011. That team needed a buzzer beater to beat Princeton. If he missed that one shot everyone would talk about how awful that team was. They were then completely on fire against OSU and UNC, that’s what it’ll take from this team. All guards need to play lights out and Richards has to play well and we can beat anyone. Last night doesn’t really change my outlook on the team at all.

You better be a 1, 2, or (with some luck) a 3 seed. The one outlier over the last 20 years is 7 seed UConn [sick]. The tournament isn't the crapshoot everyone makes it out to be.

A big pet peeve of mine, especially from the KSR guys who use it a lot, is this whole "If we'd have made that shot, or if we'd have beat UNC in 2017 or if that South Carolina rims out, or if just 2 or 3 plays go differently and we beat Evansville, then Cal would be a legend/This team would be right where we want/We'd be looking at a 2 seed..."

Well no ****. The sport was designed as a zero sum game where one team wins and one team loses and guess what? Most of the games are reasonably close! There are 4-5 mediocre bubble teams in the SEC every year that are 5-6 plays away from being a 3-seed too. The entire game is usually played for 3-4 critical plays or exchanges. The result is the result.

Every year that isn't an unmitigated disaster is a year that we almost had it if not for a few plays. We pay a guy millions and millions of dollars to make those plays or better yet, put the game in a place where those plays don't matter because we're up 30.

When you let bad teams hang around, screwing with lineups, having 8 healthy players, being predictable on both ends, you're essentially playing russian roulette. When you do that enough you're gonna catch a bullet. And then you can't just say "How did we get so unlucky! 1 out of 6 chance! If we had just not caught that bullet to the dome we'd be a 1 seed!" Yeah, but you've been playing russian roulette all year. Doing the same stupid ****. Doing it all year long. It's not bad luck at that point. It's who you are.

Great post - very true - Cal has a bad lead guard and that he loves - it’s no secret we flourish when he gets booted from games. We run same stuff every game both ways and let everybody hang

I don’t want to see another “lead guard” again. Give me a gd ol fashioned point guard, please.

Oh, and maybe we could get a shooting guard and a small forward.

Apparently KSR is now Pravda in its analysis:

Is it possible for a player with just two points to be one of the most valuable players on the floor? EJ Montgomery certainly made an argument for it.

Finishing with two points (1-1 shooting), four rebounds, three blocks, and an assist in just 17 minutes of action, the sophomore forward quietly put together a strong performance on both ends of the floor, a positive sign of things to come.

On offense, Montgomery moved the ball, created opportunities for his teammates, and converted on his lone shot attempt at the top of the key. Defensively, the 6-foot-11 forward was active and aggressive for the majority of his time on the floor, contesting numerous shots in the paint even outside the three blocks he picked up.

John Calipari called on Montgomery to put forth long stretches of consistency rather than just a few minutes at a time, and he did that for the Cats this evening. It came in a losing effort, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on as we hit the home stretch of the season.

Lighten up Francis...it was a joke. The hospital construction has been well documented in the news media.
