Considering the innocent, unfortunate souls who “retard” slurs, yeah, I’d rather people not use it and would definitely say it’s offensive. I’m ashamed I’ve used it in the past. It’s called maturity.

I get it - and I have a lot of empathy for people who either have disabilities or those with kids who have them. My mother was a special education teacher, so I definitely understand the challenges.
In the 80’s, the term retarded was an acceptable way of referring to someone with Down Syndrome. Since the 90's we started referring to the disabled person's specific condition (e.g., Down Syndrome) or saying, as you did, they have “special needs”.
I really believe that "retard", as it is used today, is similar to "dumb", "moron" or "idiot", which at one time referred to mentally disabled people, but evolved to refer to people without disabilities that did/said ignorant things. I feel like reasonable people know that the Giants football player was using the term in that way. He wasn't making fun of somebody with Down Syndrome, he was calling somebody an idiot for a dumb question.
Pretty much. One of my good friends has a son with special needs. He was irate when Trump mocked that disabled reporter, and I’m sure doesn’t feel much sympathy for this baseball player either.
I don’t know Wayne- imagine he’s a decent guy, but he sure comes off pompous and unsympathetic on here.
Get off Twitter and out of the comments section of “news” articles and you’ll probably experience much less of this nonsense, bubba.

-referring to someone with mental disabilities as "retarded" its fine on it's own. My personal example: "My godson is retarded." As always with a sensitive subject it is best to know your audience...even the clinical use of the word above may offend some.
-Using it as a pejorative is not ok. The guy shouldn't lose his gig...but as a public figure he sure as hell should know not to put himself in harm's way by using it publicly.

"Cancel Culture" is pretty overblown. About the best thing that can happen to any comedian who's actually talented is to get "cancelled." Next thing you know he's got a Netflix special called "Dangerous" that he prepped for on his national "Get Triggered" Tour, where he does a tight twenty minutes to close out about how he got cancelled. Must suck.
#lifeofowen is why I stopped using the word. Now it's nails on chalk board along with a few other terms I'm ashamed I regularly used in jest. Also glad we don't have our whole teenage/early 20s on video like today.

Kind of like maybe there's a middle in here somewhere where people can be reasonable and have a normal conversation about it and learn from shared experience. Pretty neat, imo.

Jenkins did not get fired for using the R word, he get fired for doubling down and saying it is hood slang, and then after he kept catching **** for doubling down, gave a half ***, fake apology that he pretty much said he did not mean. I have a son who is special needs, it strikes a nerve with me when someone using it playing or not. There are other words or phrases to use, Dumb *uck, or something similar. I used the word when I was young and immature, not proud to say I did. But nobody should lose their job for saying it, but when you double down and give a BS reason and lackluster apology, yea, that is a problem. But the real truth, they where going to cut him at the end of the year anyway, that just speed up the process.
And before it happens, MAMBA or anyone else, save the immature remarks, it is not cool, nor funny. My son is a great kid and about as lovable as anyone you would ever come across.
