He ended up being pretty good by the end of his career. He should have been a defensive tackle rather than a linebacker but we would have never landed him if we converted him to DT so it is what it is.

Dude made some big plays. I don't think it is fair to lump him in with busts.
Exactly. He would've had a 10+ year NFL career if he'd gone the proper route. Instead he was a 290# Mike. Miss St. and Anthony Dixon ran roughly 30 counters for roughly 8 million yards against us that one year....nothing a dude his size could do about it.

Mossakowski is a good one. I remember a lot of hype for Arliss Beach, that UK had never had a RB with his speed but it never worked out. On defense, Demarius Rancifer was rated a Top 30 HS LB, but I can't remember a thing he did. Finally Morgan Newton was supposed to be a 5-star prospect whose biggest contribution is the falling down meme(but I think he was starting qb when we won at Auburn)

Ha... the counter and a delayed handoff on a draw play are the two plays that expose mediocre LBs. I say that from experience getting torched on about 10 straight draw plays in high school.

"What coach, the QB was showing pass so I dropped back in coverage?!?".
"Just sit on the bench, Dougan"

SAE's letter, and its mention of Eric Gray, brings to mind this question...

Who is the UK football recruit you were most hyped for over the years that didn't pan out?

Mine was Donnie Redd. I'd seen him do crazy, Barry Sanders-type stuff in HS ball and was convinced he'd be a star at Kentucky.
Donnie is my neighbor and the nicest man there is. Tore his quad against IU in a game that he ran for over 100 yards early in his career. Never got back his form as Curry rushed him back too quickly and he never fully healed. Also, the fact that Moe Williams was on several teams with him and they handed the ball to him 83 times a game didn't help.

I thought it might be a bit unfair of me to lump Micah into that mix, but I honestly thought he could have been the second coming of Javon Kearse. Decent and effective player, just not what I was hoping for.

Smith was an unbelievable athlete. He did have 50 and 30 catches his last two years, not exactly a bust.

The 4 stars we recruited prior to Stoops, were generally available due to issues we were willing to overlook. Now, we get them for the right reasons.

Scrolling this last page, it's a painful reminder of how bad we were and how hopeful we were for these losers to pan out.

Derek Smith / Brad Pyatt should’ve been legends here. Now just an afterthought.

Smith was first team SEC his soph season...80 receptions/1200 yds in 2 yrs before heading off to the league. Really no reason for him to stay his senior year given the turmoil and uncertainty of the direction of the offense.

‘Can’t miss, but total miss recruits’ will be on Mags list tomorrow. Guaranteed.

Smith was first team ALL-SEC. That's not too shabby.

Edit - GD it. I hate agreeing with 14k Cole. Sooooo, on second thought, Smith was a bust and should've never seen the field.

Wish he had come back for his senior year. He did make a couple of NFL practice squads and later played against UK as a member of the NKU basketball team.

I know a girl D Smith dated for a while and always felt if I were on the UK football team and all-SEC I could do a lot better. Same went for James Whalen. Apparently high-level UK tight ends have no game.

I’ve got an autographed Herm Winningham poster.

brady?

Just need an estimate. It’s NFS, but I’d like to know.

Got a Reds program with John Franco and Ron Robinson on the cover signed by Houston’s Dickie Thon.

On a related unrelated note, Eastbound&Down once got my Earth Wind & Fire Greatest Hits CD signed by Junior Brown. I’m sure it’s a one-of-a-kind item. Just hoping the American Pickers stop by now…

Mike Major and Claude Bassett…

Every year about this time I get worried that Todd Grantham is out of a job and will show up on UK’s staff. Rest assured, he’s somehow still employed as a DL coach with the Saints.

(I don’t know that he has any connections with anyone on UK’s staff- I just figure he’s worked everywhere else and is due for a stint in Lexington. Hope I’m wrong.)

If you’re not playing Etown spades, joker, joker, deuce, ace with 6 bags youre not really bout it anyway.
He and his ilk at the SAE house played an unGodly amount of euchre. Guess if you just wanted absolutely no part of this NCAA Football smoke it was a nice pastime.

Good guy, though.

Donnell “Flash” Gordon.

Rushed for 6300 yards and 61 touchdowns at South Oldham.
He was a dud at UK and UL.

He did however run straight over me as a freshman, at a time I thought I was a little head hunter safety. Then I realized a was a little white kid who doesn’t have a future in football.

I took math more seriously afterwards. Ended up in engineering. So I can say I went pro in something other than sports. Thanks Flash.
