I have friends that went to military academy (West Point, Annapolis, Colorado Springs) for undergrad, then did medical school through the military medical school. Not only did they incur no student loans, they actually got paid every year as an officer (50-60k)...the downside is they did take on a 7 year obligation for each...

So as long as you are comfortable to committing the next 14 years of your life to the military (and really its more like 20, considering you can retire with benefits then) its a great option, particularly for primary care.

I graduated from law school with right at $100k in loans. Deferred for a bit, and it got up to $120k or so.

Took 15 years to pay off. Basically had two mortgage payments during that time. The upside is that when you pay it off and you have all that extra take-home pay, you're essentially getting a $20,000 raise.

I'm surprised more people don't take this route, tbh.

I mean, you're asking an 18 yo for quite a commitment. They don't exactly just let you go home to mama if you don't like it. They own your ***. You are no longer a citizen, you are a soldier.

I would think you would AT LEAST want 1 year of realistic potential earning to be equivalent to the total loan at that level of borrowing. 300 each for doctors doesn't sound that insane to me. Ron, are you a doctor? Stop being weird and just tell us the field. I get privacy concerns but I think everyone here knows what profession we're in.

Yeah, I don't know how you go against Anthony Davis, but if anybody was more impressive it's KD.

Hard to punish him for having Rick Barnes as a coach.

MUCH more importantly, Ron needs to tell us how much he and his wife make. Guarantee there's a handful of marginally educated folks on here (salespeople) who make more than him. Which is warranted, as he's clearly an idiot.

Walk up music -- I'd be tempted to rotate in and out the most recent super annoying teeny bopper song, just to be silly.

If any of you have kids and are terrified of the cost of college, I'll be happy to sit down with you and show you how to make it work, financially speaking. Same with buying a car, apartment shopping, buying clothes, etc. You may not be happy with the "sacrifices" it takes to make it work, but it's doable. Note: most people are terrible with money, so it probably doesn't hurt to figure out what they're doing, and do the opposite. You're welcome.

Okay guys, this is the last of it as I'm sure you guys are sick of talking about it to, but anyway here's my post from the other thread:

Okay, fine you ********, I'll give you my personal information.

I'm a prosthodontist (specialist in implant and cosmetic dentistry) and my wife is an orthodontist (braces). We went to the cheapest dental school in the united states of america (WVU) with both having zero loans whatsoever, as we both had full rides for undergrad. We each graduated with 150K in student loans. Since graduating in 2011, WVU has jacked up tuition 35% (Because they can) and now the average dental school graduate from the cheapest dental school in USA has 200K in debt. If you go to NYU dental school as out of state, you will be in 550K debt. I went to speciality training at Ohio State University, one of the cheapest residencies in all of the USA (along with my wife), and we racked up an additional 150K each (includes food, cost of living, etc.). An in-state ohio resident that graduates from Ohio State Dental school has an average graduating debt of 235K. Out of state is 400K. Dental school is the most expensive professional school there is, and the universities keep cranking it up every year because they will always get applicants. My brother graduated from Medical School in 2003 with 135K debt as a comparison.

We both decided to do a speciality because we love our specialties, were both in the top 10% of our class, and as an added bonus we both make significantly more than an average general dentist. But IMO its complete ******** that if someone wants to be a dentist for a living they basically have to graduate with 250K debt in order to do it. I just think its complete BS. The few rare kids that had their parents pay for their dental school are living the damn life right now, and its annoying, but whatever. It is what it is. Anyway, my whole damn point was why the hell am I paying 6.5% interest. Its ********.

Dentists also have the highest suicide rates among health care providers, maybe that's why they raised the interest?

You know, they actually had us read a bunch of studies about this in some stupid dental school class and its actually not true. Apparently according to several studies female physicians had the highest suicide rate followed by psychiatrists. Psychiatrists I can understand, but I never really got the female physician thing. Apparently in the study it said the reason was due to how other men in society treated them and how it violated societal norms or some such.

I pay a couple hundred bucks a month in student loans but am also on a federal loan forgiveness plan where after a few more years of minimum payment, as long as I work in public education- they are forgiven.

There was a period where you could file bankruptcy and include student loan debt In that filing. Doctors did it without blinking to erase a few hundred grand in debt and start over. Gone are those days.

Good Lord willing, my kids will be able to go to school wherever I work so I'll catch a break. Who knows what costs will look like then. I would predict community colleges will have a bigger impact and there will be less state schools and private liberal arts schools will continue to take a nose dive.

Well trends do change, I guess being a medical doctor has become more depressing.

Thanks Obama.

Dental schools are full of people who couldn't get into med school. Great, solid profession but I would think the earning potential of dentists is rather limited unless you are able to start a large practice.

My best friend is a dentist. We both were wanting to go medical back in high school. He got a full ride to play soccer in college, then kind of futzed around, did research a few years. He took his sweet time getting around to it, but eventually went and met his future smoking hot wife in dental school, so I guess it worked out pretty good for him.

My Uncle will make 7 figs in a year sooner than later...he said he made 12K his first year. Of course, he didn't have to pay for his dental school, and my grandfather didn't give him **** (other than free office space, which is a lot) to start.

My friend Troy, who many of you know, runs one of the biggest practices in Cincy with a partner..prime office downtown in the US Bank Center. He is absolutely MURDERING, he's 36. (Beck/Pearce)

I was talked out of dentistry by my family (7 dentists in Madisonville at one time) believe it or not...and I don't regret it, even though I know the money can be pretty silly. I don't know Ron Mehico's personal situation, but between he & his wife, 600K sounds like a drop on the bucket in the grand scheme of things, as scary as that sounds.

Just had this image of Bbdk sitting in a dentist chair, mask of nitrous around his neck, staring googly eyed at me with a drill in his hand, mumbling something incoherent...truly haunting.

^ that's really funny coming from you, bub.

I'm me for certain, but I'm a drop in the bucket compared to my Dad or Uncle if you wanna talk young/middle man shenanigans, TS.

Still tho, YOU talking about "I can't imagine if..." [laughing] You are the poster boy for that.

I never said I can't imagine, unfortunately, I did just imagine.

"Hey guys, another long day in the office, shew. Can't believe how some people don't brush and floss. Got to work with my uncle today, truly a legend in his field. Won't be long before my book is full."

Worked for Dad for 2 summers in HS, knew it wasn't for me. Plus, at the time I thought it would mean moving back to Madisonville to REALLY have it made...but of course, that was silly thinking.

Working inside of a small hole all day long is way too stressful for my tastes #jokes -- I'm a sales/hype man. I finally found my calling. :) (although dentistry is largely sales as well)
