Looking to get a new handgun. Either a .40 or a .45...something big, nah mean? Preferably $700 or less.

Any good recommendations?

Don't go with the .40. All the downsides of a .45 along with all the negatives of 9mm.

At that price point, I would go with what felt good in your hands between Ruger or Glock.

$700 won’t get a decent bigger size firearm? I could expand it a little, certainly don’t want to spend 1k though.

I have a Walther CCP M2 9m. I love it.

Just wanted to get a bigger size. Testosterone and such.

Also wanted to get American this time as well.

Good luck finding anything at a decent price point right now. Hold off till after the election and If Trump wins you will see a flood of used guns on the market. If Biden wins the firearms market may never recover.

The question is what is the guns intended purpose?

Also don't get washed away with the youtube shills claiming the 40 is a dead caliber. Buy what ever you enjoy shooting.

Ammo is an important consideration. What do the other people in your circle shoot? If they shoot the 9 mm, get one. High mag capacity is another thing to consider, you may need to put a lot lead down range at one time (imagine mistakenly driving into one of these crazy protests). Unlike what you see on the movies, hand guns are very inaccurate, especially in low light, chaotic conditions. For 99% of the population they are a close quarter weapon, suited for a distance of 10-20 yards. All that being said, you can never go wrong with a Glock. If you decide on a 9mm, check out the Canik, shoots great, feels good and has a 20 round mag. Ammo is becoming harder and harder to find, if Biden wins, look for that problem to get worse (taxes, more regulation, executive orders, etc.). Also if Biden wins, there will be "panic" buys the next morning, people will buy everything in stock and Biden's handlers will start using Executive Orders to make firearms harder to buy.

Unfortunately all my firearms were lost in a tragic boating accident off the coast of Bahrain in 89.

Go on line and check out Ruger. Quality pistols, reasonable price. I have bought several and have not been disappointed.

I would suggest a Ruger GP100 357 magnum. You can target shoot with cheaper 38s and carry it with some fancy 357 hollowpoints. Sure, has less capacity but always fires.

It would be great it this happened, but I don't think we will ever see a flood of used firearms (at least at reasonable prices) on the market. Buy all the guns and ammo you can now, don't wait until after the election.

Yea, it’s like trying TJ time the stock market or real estate market. If you want something, go get it.

S&W M&P45 2.0 if you want a striker fired pistol.

Kimber 1911 or Ruger SR1911 if you want a 1911 style pistol. Rock Island Armory (RIA) 1911 if you want a decent budget gun.

Wow that’s a great price for that S&W...that’s definitely in consideration now.

I obviously know of Smith&Wesson, but how dependable are they? People in the gun community like em pretty good?

Go buy what you want. Don't ask others if you're just wanting something fun to shoot. I love my .44 Mag and .44 Special as far as fun to shoot. I generally use 9MM for conceal carry. .45 and .40 cal aren't that much different from a 9 MM to me. I think the 9MM is better honestly. .357Mag is a fun shoot too.

I target shoot on a regular basis and own several pistols and revolvers. I’m not sure what the hell you’re talking about regarding the negatives of a .40 Cal. One of my favorite pistols to shoot, not carry because it’s too big, is the Glock Model 22 .40 cal. Fantastic round and gun. 15 round mag with night sites. Cost should be under $700.

What do you want the gun for? CCW? Home protection? That will narrow it down for us.

I like a .40. It’s got anecdotal stopping power a 9 mm doesn’t with a the advantage of a slightly larger magazine. I also like something with an exposed hammer, but caliber and functionality are “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” type things, so no offense 9mm guys.

Nothing shoots better than a 1911 in 45 acp. In that price range look at Ruger, Springfield, or a Para Ordinance if you can find one. Taurus makes a decent 1911 for the money as well. The secret to a good 1911 is good magazines, spend the money on a couple of Wilson Combat mags and you will have a dependable pistol.

I had one of those and sold it about 10 years ago bc ammo got so high. I’ve regretted it since. If something needs killing the hollow points will do the job. I’d get two unopened coke cans and shoot one with a .38 and then with a .357 hollow point. The .38 would blow it up but the can still recognizable. The one with the hollow point would leave nothing but shredded aluminum. I’d love to have it back.

I’ve always liked this Ruger 1911. Brother in law has one. It shoots just fine.
I have a Ruger SR 45 that is my truck gun. It’s accurate and has been reliable.

I've got a full size M&P in .40 that I've had since 2007 and haven't had any problems with it. I use it as a home defense and range gun and honestly I've lost track of how many rounds I've put thru it. I liked it so much that I bought an M&P Shield 9mm a couple of years ago and use it for occasional CC but mostly as a range gun as well. Haven't had any problems with the Shield either. The M&P line, especially the 2.0 versions, has a reputation for reliability.

Here's a brief article about the M&P 2.0:
https://nationalinterest.org/blog/b... M&P 2.0,pistol without a single malfunction.

If you've got a range that rents guns close by I'd go shoot as many as you can to get a good feel for it.

Academy gets them in if they are in your area. Just find out when the store shipment days are and call first thing that morning

Wouldn't call myself a guru but do enjoy my Walther PPQ (mine is in 9mm). I really like the trigger pull and overall feel of it..

Have a Walther PPS in 9mm and like it too.
Just got a Sig Sauer P365 in 9mm. Both are Small and ideal for concealed Carry.

Another question: I have a .50 caliber muzzleloader in awesome shape with a scope mounted. Where would the best place be for me to sell it to help fund a pistol purchase?

I live in Texas.

The TexAgs board has a classifieds forum were guns are sometimes advertised, but a muzzleloader may be a tough sell.
